What if Shadowrun was written and owned by Square Enix?
>>
Linear storyline with a shitload of sidequests.

Campaigns would be grinds until your numbers can beat the BBEG's numbers, and in the meantime you work out the finer point of Chocobo husbandry.
>>
Everyone would have a stat for Belts and a stat for Zippers.

A human would stand a chance against a dragon.

Do I get to dictate the creative team? That would be unironically fantastic and far better than the Shadowrun we do have.

Inb4 rabid anti-weeaboos act like Square Enix have never made a good game and they weren't into FF back in the day.
>>
>>44178856
This. Besides, it means we get more SR vidya.
>>
>>44178856
Square-Enix is not Squaresoft, even if it wears its skin.
>>
they'd fail to grasp the concept of shadowrun and make rehash over rehash of the SNES games rather than making well-written dialogues like HBS is doing and the gameplay would become increasingly more distant to the original game

the games would become more casualized and the average age would fall into 15-21 with more and more characters that are "children of the slum" (that would realistically get shot by a troll with a shotgun the second they stepped into a corp building) getting major roles and how they're special somehow - in a setting where the point is that nobody should stand out

they'd also make flamboyant appearances out of characters that are supposed to be hidden and would ruin shamans entirely by turning them into summoners of gigantic deities, streetsams would be overdesigned edgelords and mages will be bright-haired girls with giant hats

also all characters regardless of metatype are now white, black, or asian with white features

if we were talking about squaresoft they'd make the best shadowrun games to ever exist but we're talking about square enix here

prove me wrong
protip: you might
>>
>>44179146
Didn't Kingdom Hearts do rather well despite all of it's silliness? Besides OP said that Shadowrun was written and owned by Enix, meaning that it would be completely different than it is today because that implies that it never existed into Enix made it.
So the point of Shadowrun would become completely different anyway.
>>
>>44179146
Well, I honestly don't think they'd fuck up the character designs all that much. Some Shadowrun characters really do dress like complete shitheads, and "magic-chic" is an actual thing. A girl in a giant floppy wizard hat would probably be viewed as some kind of poser, and Edgelord McBelty wouldn't stand out all that much from the average ganger going to a club. Or the average high society function if they make the belts fancier.

Better question: what if Shadowrun was written and owned by Atlus?
>>
>>44179304
what i mean is they're gonna blow up the core element that makes them into desproportionate caricatures of their former selves

streetsams would go from trenchcoat and cyber to THREE BELTS WITH SMALLER BELTS ON THEM, THEY ALSO HAVE METAL SPIKES IN THEIR SINGLE HUGE PAULDRON AND THEIR 3 METER KATANA IS NOW ENGRAVED WITH THE WORD "D E A T H" IN RED LETTERS AND ALSO HAVE A HOOD TO HIDE THEIR SPIKY HAIR AND THEIR TROUBLED PAST or some shit
>>
>>44179580
Square may be over the top at times, but it's never that obnoxious.
Hell Deus Ex wasn't that crazy with it's design, and that was made by Square.
Besides, Sora's more recent design in KH looks allot less complicated.
>>
>>44179580
Nigga, what?
>>
Do I get to determine who they have actually running it?
Because if so, I just put Matsuno in charge of it.
I guarantee we'd get fucking GOD-TIER Shadowrun vidya that way.
>>
>>44178566
They'd probably reboot everything and it'd be pretty cool, but so different from any previous rendition of Shadowrun that it might as well get a different name.
>>
>>44178668
that's old Square

new Square Enix you remove side quests and add belts
>>
>>44179625
To be fair Deux Ex wasn't made by Square, at least not by any of its internal development teams in Japan. It was made by Eidos Montreal, and while a subsidiary, is in effect its own company in terms of design and development. Square Japan seemed to have very little input and told them to run with it, and instead only published the game. They were surprisingly very hands off with the game.
>>
>>44179833

To be fair, they'd release graphically updated versions of their more popular releases.

So we'd have that.

I think you're mistaking Square-Enix with it's fanbase.

None of Square's designs are ever that over the top and annoying.

Hell, there's a lot of western studios that are way worse for overdesigning their characters.
>>
>>44179580
The setting is ALREADY a disproportionate character of it's former self, only in a shitty 1990's American sense.
Right now your argument is that it would turn into shit while literally shoveling a different flavor of shit into your mouth.

CGL is goddamn garbage.

In the Pathfinder General thread, there's a 3rd party company that posts information on playing with mechs.

Combine this with Path of War (deathblows) and Psionics (ether) from Dreamscarred Press.
>>
>>44186072
This. The only thing I can really see them fucking up with is the concept if the big scaly bros/waifus. They would make them boss monsters and completely miss their point, along with make insect spirits just a chump boss.

also don't forget corridor or the hall you can't leave. It could be used also as old D&D where you go from one 20ft.x20ft. room to the other and kill enemies.
>>
>>44190220
Actually, some of the other parts of that setting were pretty Shadowrunny. Cosmo Canyon could easily be a place out in the NAN somewhere, and Junon could be any small town that a megacorp decided to utilize. The Mako reactors fit the profile of secret experimental facilities and shinra's exploitative energy rationing policies fit the ethics of a megacorp to a tee.

Somehow they manage to include lots of pointless cutscenes in future rulebooks. So. Many. Cutscenes.
>>
I don't know if anyone here has played Just Cause 2 or 3, but I'm working out how to put together a shadowrun game based on the story of 2. It has different factions for Mr. Johnson needs, ready made shadowrun style missions, and the style of the game screams pink mohawk.
3 pissed me off when they changed Rico from some kind of hispanic/latin to italian, the Antonio banderas wannabe voice sounded cool in 2 but this vague Italian accent in 3 just killed it for me. Story still has potential, but they made it about family, so getting shadowrunners involved might take a bit of work.
For thread related purposes, square enix published 2 and 3, avalanche studios did the development.
>>
>>44183525
I dunno, Square's been on turn again the last year or two. Their rpgs have been of better than average quality again. The only outright abomination was 13-3, two years ago. Since then they've reoriented on their core market, nailing FF14's overhaul and then Heavensward, some solid remakes, a handful of games that were reportedly good released in Japan that'll be released elsewhere next year like Bravely Second, and the coming year is bright with a plethora of stuff like FF15, a couple Dragon Quests, and a handful of minor games/remakes.

The belts will remain but the quality of gameplay has been going back up.
>>
>>44185824

GURPS, using:

Pyramid 40 - for the Mecha

Chinese Elemental Powers - for the super-martial arts powers, taking some inspiration from Sorcery to cover the Ether abilities. Psionics would also work quite well.

High-Tech and Ultra-Tech for this and that.

That's about all you'd really need. There's more that would fit but it's not required.

Monster Hunters would help set out some templates of around the right power level - Heroes would be around 300 points.

But you'd make clear that most of those points are for their personal combat power and not skills - because while you can't really fight a mech on foot, hand-to-hand is at least competitive with laser guns and monsters.

If the PCs aren't expected to be as hardcore as the protagonists, then 100 or so would be fine - mercenaries or soldiers in Gears don't need lots of points.
>>
>>44192245
I do think it says something that when 14 was so bad they straight up said sorry and did something about it.

You don't see companies own up to their games being released shitty as hell and then doing something about it.

And even 13-3 wasn't the worst RPG I've ever played. Had an absolutely terrible story, but mechanically it was kind of interesting to play. Lot of customization and interesting tactics that could be done in battle.
>>
>>44190220
Xenogears might be the closest fit.

There was an Old Square Enix that made cool games like Secret of Evermore.

>>44192245

They also made Life Is Strange. So LESBIAN SEEKING TORNADOS is now part of this year's squinex crop for some fucking reason.

>ruin shamans entirely by turning them into summoners of gigantic deities

I've seen a shinto mage nearly kill themself doing almost that. Force 16 spirits are a hell of a trip.

>streetsams would be overdesigned edgelords and mages will be bright-haired girls with giant hats

So 'Streetsams' and 'About half of mages'?
>>
>>44192630
The Heartless are analogous to the Horrors, and those can't do shit until the magic in the world hits peak levels.

There would be charts and rules for how to generate random events that are somehow heart wrenching even if they make zero amount of sense.

It would also be a rule for GMs to never EVER fully explain any plotpoint. If a part of the campaign ends with the player knowing whats going on, the game has to be restarted with a different setting and all characters have to be rerolled.

Probably over the top.

But you're playing time mage here, Square Enix is solely in the business of raping dead corpses for all their worth. They don't actually make anything.

They could OWN it.

But "written by"? That's something Square would do, but not square enix. Those days are over.

"written" isn't a word I would use for Kingdom Hearts. It's rather a bunch of dudes throwing(or having thrown, they should have finished years ago) some ideas together and then filling the thing up with any disney franchise they're allowed to have.

And if the friends don't like it, just retcon it in the next game and pretend it's a twist.
