Hi, I've never played dungeons and dragons, but I really want to get into it. I found a website called roll20, and i've found a few games that look like they could be fun, I just don't know how to go about building a character and stuff. Any tips or pointers?

weeeelllll,
roll20 is a crapshoot. Unless you're really lucky, you'll have a couple bad experiences. Don't be afraid to bail on a game that is a clusterfuck, though it is polite to let the person running it that you are leaving so they don't expect you back.

You got any friends? If it's your first time, I'd suggest playing in person.
>>
is there another way to play online? I don't know of any groups in my town.

Try reading the fucking rulebook. It usually helps.

I think this is pretty helpful for new players interested in getting into 5e.

https://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop/players-basic-rules

It has what you need to get started, and if you're interested in learning more and getting more options for character creation, there's links in the 5th Edition general thread to download all of the books. You can also ask for advice on helping you build certain character concepts there.

Thank you, I sincerely appreciate the help!

It depends on edition, ultimately. 3.X has a LOT of math, 4e leans toward making it video game-y, and 5th edition, while good (my preferred edition), is relatively new and doesn't have a huge amount of content yet. Usually, stats are found with rolling 4d6 (though some people do it differently, like "3d6, in order") once each for STR, CON, DEX, INT, WIS, and CHA, dropping the dice that rolled lowest, and assigning the numbers based on what class you pick (i.e. putting your highest into STR and CON as a Barbarian, or into INT as a Wizard) From there you just need to buy equipment with your starting gold.
