First postulated to exist in the 11th century, Vegetable Lambs were used to explain the existence of cotton. It was thought that the lamb was the fruit of the plant, and was connect to the stem by an umbilical cord. Within a small radius, the lamb was thought to walk around a support itself by eating nearby foliage.

Rather than healing poultices or items, they use food to replenish their health. Foraged food can be eaten raw to top it off, but the best stuff comes from the experienced hand that makes a dish that keeps you warm and full.

I'd be more comfortable having the players finding a magic cooking pan that can essentially make anything put into it taste delicious and nutritious, like, even creatures and plants that normally aren't palatable or digestible are rendered completely edible. It could be extremely convenient for people who don't want to have to manage rations all the time.

Would it be awkward to serve a roasted harpy at a banquet? I mean, with the humany bits and all.
>>
>>44018012
Pretty sure that would be something of a social faux pas. Or a felony. I forget which.
>>
>>44018012
I think it'd be pretty dependant on both how harpies 'worked' and the social/cultural norms of the place you're serving it at.

If harpies are beasts with no/limited intelligence then it might be seen as normal. Alternatively your culture could be like Dwarf Fortress elves, where butchering and eating 'human-like' things is seen as fine. It's not impossible to imagine a world that develops where eating something like an intelligent harpy (who is seen as a monstrous non-person due to fantasy racism or whatever) is seen as acceptable.

It might be unacceptable for a number of other reasons not related to it being human-ish, such as being tainted by evil, magic or whatever.

Obviously if you're a GM and you make the culture like that then you'd need to explain it to the players before they encounter it (assuming they're from that culture) and it'd be difficult to make squeamish people understand or relate to a group who did this. (since most would see it as an evil act) but you can definitely play upon the morality of a setting by making something most today would consider monstrous as just another part of life. "The Harpies eat us, we eat the harpies. Good meat is scarce and we're all animals who've been doing this for centuries, just look at our recorded history." or something like that could be really interesting, but it'd be best used if you avoided just having it be a shocking truth, and actually used it as part of the building blocks for a setting.
>>
>>44018012
Seems like it would go over about as well as serving roast vulture. You would obviously not serve it with the head cause that would be creepy, but I don't think anyone would consider harpy to be particularly edible in the first place.

I carefully considered the cuisine of the various cultures in my homebrew setting, especially since I replaced all the races except humans with new ones. Primarily I tried to base their tastes on the creatures they've derived from(the ant and bee people having a massive sweet tooth between them), geographical location, and techniques available.

I bet a lot of the more exotic or outlandish dishes would have been made by adventurers who hadn't bought any rations and after slaying a few owlbears decided "fuck it."

Actually, that would be a good idea for a character: A foodie who wants to collect and compile a book on all the dishes of the land. Morale owuld certainly be high with him taking over dinner time.

Wasteful, your parents must be ashamed of you.

My setting includes a number of planets and they do have non-spacetravel means of transportation between them. This means, of course, there's much more of everything, but especially more things to eat. There's soup made of some alien meat with a shape and consistency similar to udon noodles in a blue broth, curried edible stones, creatures which are oddly similar to flying chunks of twisted roots and are eaten by charring and grating them and mixing with sap--there are a lot of things I could describe, but I'd have to describle the flora/fauna/other of those many subsettings to do so.
