I think I was lucky, but what I did was make her try yo help my player's cheracters whenever possible. For example, a player wanted to learn alchemy, so she used her position of power to get him a teacher. Whenerver they embark in a long journey, she always arranges that they have some rations; things like that.

I like my fallen paladins as stubbornly moral men who stand by what's fair and just, even when their god says to do wrong, even when their god says "YOU'RE OFF THE FORCE, I'M TAKING YOUR BADGE AND GUN".

Arthas was so great because his plan would have actually worked.
His armies were diminished, his best commanders killed or banished, and his ace in hole, (Mograine and Sylvannas) turned against him.
He realizes the folly of another all out attack and withdraws.
The only fault in the plan was him not anticipating Ashbringer's power.
Otherwise, we'd all be derp knights under his command.

Depends on your viewpoint.
He could be a king willing to burn his very soul to buy his kingdom just a little more time. Or he could be a coward that, in his refusal to let his reign end, has had a hand in creating demons, caused the world to rot around him, and persisted the undead curse.
I do not believe that Gwyn has done what he has out of compassion, but fear of the unknown.
So many good choices, and such excellent taste in characters.
Are properly done fallen paladins simply the best there is?

It's ambiguous, like most of Dark Souls lore. I like to think that Gwyn saw the end of the Age of Fire as a return to the grey, timeless world before the First Flame, which is essentially the end of the world as we know it. I think he was terrified at the prospect of things going back to the horrible, pointless world of dragons and pygmies and thus lit his soul ablaze to keep the world going just a little bit longer.
The warm, fuzzy part of me hopes that he did it out of love for his children.
