I have played with a DM's foam D20 which was about five inches (12.7cm) tall. It felt too large. Unwieldy. Knocked over figures. Just impractical.

At the point the die gets substantially larger than a baseball is when I would say it's a tad too big. Mostly because at that size they start making the dice out of stupid materials. Of course, for systems that use larger dice pools, if you can't throw your dice in one go buy smaller dice. For example, if a guy shows up to a shadow run session and all his dice are 7cm cubes, that shit is going to get real old real fast.
