The entire vault could hold 1000 people, they were segregated by race in four separate groups of 250 persons each. Each group could survive on its own and had the necessary stuff to do so but at the same time each group had a particular thing in excess.

I hate these vault ideas, the first vault ideas made sense as experiments, for example seeing the results of long term isolation, or the results of including an actively mixed group of peoples to help ensure the survival of humanity. Shit like everyone has schizophrenia or we divide them into groups for no reason is stupid. If you want to make a vault it should probably either be a control group vault or have a justification for its purpose, eg. a vault full of military personnel and their families to see how a society made up of large numbers of military personnel (like the Enclave) might adapt as a society.

The mirror walls are meant as a last-ditch defense against invaders. There are also many, many secret doors in the walls. The vault dwellers have found a third of them. Mi'go LARPers get more bonus exp for finding secret doors than other dwellers. There are no secret doors in the room of total collected knowledge, but the floors and walls are decorated to the point where it looks and feels as if there are a thousand places there *could* be one.
Actually, LARPing can explain a lot of the suggestions that don't make sense. Moon base with Molasses floors? Everyone has to move in slow motion and jump to move, or else they get an experience penalty.
