Hey /tg/, sorry to bother but I'm a real rookie with 5e and more than that a complete newbie to bards. My buddies are planning a pirate themed campaign but I don't yet know what to play. I'd like to fill the role of caster for our group and heard bard was an op class for "just about everything"
tl:dr In 5e, what's tbe most broken magic user build possible by level 5-10?
Why don't you play what you want instead of trying to break the system like its a video game?

Because I don't know what I want to play I guess. Fair enough though, I probably wouldn't have much fun if I'm not attached to the character, I just figured I'd get into it if I knew I was packing serious heat going into the campaign. I'll spend some more time trying to figure things out on my own, just kinda outta character concepts this time around..

Line the classes, races and backgrounds into seperate lists. Number them. Roll dice.
Enjoy.

Oh, man that's a good idea, thanks!
Final dumbass question: What allows a bard to be a skill-monkey with spells from other classes? Is it a feat or something only bard's can do?
>>43932259
What? You're basically just describing a bard.
>>43932435
Oh they just kinda do that on their own?.. I've never played a bard before and was dropped on my head as a baby.. Sorry
>>43932480
Alright.
As a bard, you have spells mostly from the wizard/sorcerer list, as well as the cleric list. They're mostly buff and debuff spells, so no slinging fireballs or flying around.
You get a fair amount of skill points, but at least some of them need to be sunk into your Perform skill. Your most reliable and consistent role will be to provide support through music.
Don't do close combat. It always seems viable in an emergency, but bards quickly become musical punching bags in melee.

I'd heard with stuff like Contagion they could be fierce swashbucklers? And that at higher levels I could almost play them like a Magus? I miiight be just reading this from other places but have no idea what I'm reading.. Sorry again

Contagion, as per your example, gives a chance of inflicting a disease on your target when you touch them. While this can be useful, it does little to address the fact that you are a fragile musician, not a trained warrior. It's a question of Hit Points more than anything.

Jesus, this character practically plays itself OP
>>43932838
Exactly. You're the guy in the crow's nest, singing to raise spirits, looking out for enemy ships, and occasionally taking potshots.

Read the fucking book.

>so no slinging fireballs or flying around.
Why not? You get six magical secrets that can be from any class. What's stopping you from flying or throwing fire?
>skill points
>some of them need to be sunk into your Perform skill
What? What are "skill points"? What are you talking about?
>Don't do close combat.
>bards quickly become musical punching bags in melee
Again, what? Why not? Do you know the first thing about Valor bards? They're amazing.

I am talking out of my 3.5/Pathfinder ass, apparently. My bad
A stormborn sorcerer was literally made for pirating what with wind control and fucking up other ships with lighting.
