Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you burned a man alive in sacrifice to your vengeful gods.

What had the spirit meant when it called you a liar? Were you not actually sharing your thoughts with some aborted god-like entity, or is whatever it is that lives in your skull not actually a failed attempt to elevate a mortal to godhood? Could the Varistha have lied to you?

The sharp pain splitting your skull momentarily puts an end to your worrying. Were it not for the wave of nausea that followed, you'd almost be grateful for the chance to pull your thoughts together. You shouldn't panic, panicking never accomplishes anything. You should focus on keeping it together at least until the end of the feast, then maybe afterwards you can try and figure out what on Earth is wrong with your soul, or mind, or wherever this entity was supposed to be living inside of you.

You pull the library door open and try to walk with some semblance of normalcy into the hall beyond, but stumble rather ungracefully on your own two feet and nearly smash head first into the opposite wall. Pins and needles prick their way up your arms and legs, as if you'd been sleeping contorted in some strange position. Just how long have you been out? Is the feast even still going? You can't hear any of the usual sounds of revelry echoing through the palace, no music nor conversation nor shouts of joy.

You're about to start stumbling towards the courtyard when, out of the corner of your eye, you spot the hem of a white dress slipping around a corner. It was probably just a slave, but images of that desiccated corpse garbed in white and gold spring to mind unbidden.

What if it's the messenger going to kill Vicitra? You might be considering killing him yourself, but you certainly don't want the messenger to do it. You might not be redeemed in the eyes of Surya if he dies by any hand but your own. Leaning heavily against the wall you rush after the slip of cloth, rounding a corner just as it slips beyond the next. You really hope it's not going to constantly maintain a distance just one turn ahead of you, being led into a trap really isn't what you planned for this evening.

As you round the next corner you spot the figure vanishing through a hidden doorway set in a recessed alcove on one side of the hall. They've slid the door closed by the time you manage to reach the doorway, but you're familiar with this sort of hidden doorway. There should be a latch somewhere around here, and looking underneath a squat bench you find it. Pressing down on a protruding block of stone elicits a soft click, the section of wall concealing the servant's passages sliding away and permitting you entry.

It strikes you just how ancient this palace must be when you find that rather than being dimly lit with lanterns, the servant's passages are lined with thin strips of enchanted metal along either side of the floor which cast a dim, blue glow on the stone walls. Slipping inside, the door is quick to shut behind you. However, a moment's investigation reveals a switch you could probably flip to open the doorway again if you needed to.

There's no sign of the figure in white, but you proceed further down the hall anyway. There aren't exactly many places it could have gone. What if you're just chasing some confused slave around the palace? That would be pretty hard to explain, it's not like you could tell them you thought they were a ghostly messenger sent by Surya himself to inform you that you've offended the gods.

You reach a four way intersection and cautiously peer around each corner, wary of stepping into an ambush. To the right seems to be some sort of dormitory, judging by the rows of bunks you can faintly make out in the azure gloom of the servant's passages. To the left, deeper into the palace, you can hear voices and see the flickering light of a flame dancing across the wall, but the hallway takes a sharp right turn. You can't actually see who's speaking. Straight ahead the hallway continues on to a dead end, likely an exit.

Well, the dormitories seem abandoned and you can't really just ignore a clandestine meeting in the narrow caves which compromise the slave passages. With your cloak swirling around you like black smoke you slink down the hall, sticking to the wall as you approach the corner and the voices become more distinct. You can tell they're both obviously women, but their voices are too quiet for you to make out anything of actual substance regarding their conversation.

You reach the sharp turn and press your back firmly against the wall, leaning over so that your head just barely peeks out into the hallway beyond. You see a woman dressed in the rich clothes of a noble conversing with a human woman in the robes of a slave. The strip of cloth down the front of the noble's outfit bears a design matching that of a tapestry streaming from the palace's walls, meaning she's probably one of your family's vassals. You couldn't say which family she belongs to specifically. Her long hair is streaked with gray, so whoever she is she's probably quite old.

Quite attractive as well, despite her age. Unfortunately you've little time to admire the woman, as she twist a hooded lantern in her hands, shedding light on the hallway. You're quick to channel vys, fading yourself out of visibility, but still. She seems quite uneasy all of a sudden. Nothing is said for what must surely be several minutes before she leans forward once more, resuming her whispering.

You slip around the corner, still invisibly, and find the room they're loitering in to be some method of storage room. You position yourself comfortably behind some crates before cutting the flow of vys and allowing yourself once more to fade into visibility. From this position you're able to just barely make out what's being said, though you channel vys to enhance your natural hearing anyway.

“-opportunity. I can't stress enough that if it's not tonight, it will be never.”
“But mistress-”
A sharp slap rings out in the stillness of the room, the echo cut off abruptly. Almost as if it was stopped unnaturally. You make a note to remember that.
“Don't 'but' me, you'll do as you agreed or you'll not leave this room. Understand?”
There's a long pause before the same voice speaks again, you can only assume it belongs to the Samjan noblewoman. “Good. Now here, take this. Don't drop it and don't dare open it before the time is right. During the ceremony, you understand?” Again the silence stretches on before the woman speaks again. “Go, before we're discovered.”

Footsteps, their echo muffled the same as the sound of the slap had been, ring out through the room as the slave marches past your hiding place, clutching something to her chest. The noble doesn't seem like she's making any move to follow.

You fade from visibility and slide out from behind the crates you'd made your hiding place, carefully removing your glass crown and tucking it into your cloak as you do. The noblewoman looks straight through you as you enter the hallway, but shows no signs of recognition. Even as you stand almost directly in front of her. Gods above, it's good to be a Vatis. If you couldn't rely on your magic you might need actual talent to pull this sort of thing off.

As soon as you get a few feet away from the storage room the echoes of the slave's footsteps become audible. You're not sure why you couldn't hear them before. Perhaps the noble has some sort of artifact on her person to create a bubble around her in which sound is muted? You can certainly see the utility in such an object, and wouldn't be surprised if either the Rhynians or the Hiacians had created such a device. Yet, enchanted objects are quite expensive. Enchanted objects which actually perform some useful task even more so. Just who is this woman that she could afford that kind of expense, it would be well outside of the typical Istandar's budget and you know of only a scarce handful of Bays in your family's employ.

The sound of stone grinding quietly against stone drags your thoughts back to your present task, catching that slave before she's able to enact whatever plan it is that her mistress has for this feast. You proceed as quickly as you can down the halls without making too much noise, but once you reach the main passage and see that the slave girl is about to shut the exit, you break into a sprint. You're only seconds too late, the door closing just as you arrive.

Wasting precious seconds you scan the walls for a switch, finding it half hidden in a recessed portion of the wall. The hidden door pops out towards you with a soft click and you're out the door in seconds, not bothering to close it behind you.
(1/3)
>>
The slave turns at the sound of your footsteps, clearly surprised, but before you're able to fire off a paralysis spell she's turned down a side hall and left you behind. Grunting in frustration you follow the slave, even as she leads you on a rather confusing journey though the winding halls of the palace, up and down stairs, and at one point through what appeared to be a bedroom.

When finally you get a clear shot on her you don't hesitate, a bolt of paralytic green energy leaping from your palm. The spell hits her square in the back but doesn't seem to take effect immediately, because she manages to shove her arm forward before her joints lock up.
>Vys Pool: (41/60)

She's going to fall forward, meaning she might smash whatever it is she's holding. You can't let that happen. Focusing your will, hands of stone spring from the floor and grab her by the shoulders. She's lowered gently to the floor, her charge left undamaged.
>Vys Pool: (40/60)

With the woman apparently dealt with, you allow yourself to relax. Leaning against the wall you take a moment to catch your breath, and try to determine just where in the palace you actually are. You think you've been through this area before, on your way to the baths near the back of the palace compound. You could probably make your way back to the courtyard from here, but you're not certain. Come to think of it, it's really odd that most of the guest are being kept in the courtyard. Normally the entire grounds would be made available for guest, but you've barely seen a soul since journeying deeper into the palace proper.

>>
You dismiss your concerns, marching towards the paralyzed woman lying on the carpeted stone floor and crouching down to get a look at whatever it is she's holding in her outstretched hand. Prying it from her grasp reveals a small wooden box which seems utterly mundane. However, channeling vys reveals something odd. Even when the rest of the world appears cast in shades of green due to your skill with Nature magic, the box appears as a black spot. A void where no vys seems to be present.

You toss the box into your cloak, and at the same time extract a length of rope. It takes some struggling on your part, since the paralysis spell has made her limbs rather had to manipulate, but eventually you manage to get the woman's hands bound to her feet and her back arched in what is surely quite the painful position. Lastly you stuff a dirty rag in her mouth and pile her off into a side room which appears to contain a massive array of pipes, water tanks, and machinery used in the heating of the palace's water. You've never seen its like, not even in El-Amin when you were tasked with maintaining the royal baths.

Leaving her there to stew in the humidity of the heating room, you wander out into the hallway and consider whether to go out looking for the noblewoman or find your brother just in case there's some kind of assassination plot in the works. Then an idea occurs to you. If you simply contact your companions via the brooches, you can have them ensure your brother's safety while you hunt down the noble.

Probing the various and manifold connections afforded to by the brooches, you realize swiftly that Profectus is asleep. Mortia seems at least mildly drunk and Chrys is enraged by something or other. Unfortunately that's all you can glean from the tenuous connections. {Listen everyone, I've discovered that there is at least one noble plotting something at this feast. I've already captured the slave she was getting to do her dirty work, but I don't know if she has any other accomplices. I need you to make sure my brother doesn't get a knife slipped between his ribs while I try to track down the noble.}

Darzi is quick to respond, she seems almost excited by the concept of a little intrigue. {You've got it, Mik. Judging by the way your brother's been eyeing me I don't think it should be difficult to get close to him.}
(1/2)
>>
Mortia coalesces her scattered thoughts into something resembling coherence with only minor difficulty, from what you can tell. {Sure thing, you got it Mikle. Nothin'll hurt him on our watch.}

Fulvia cuts in sharply, her mind as incomprehensible as usual. {Did you just call him Mikle?}

Your poisonous friend response is almost belligerent, although you think she's joking. {What're you gonna do about it, Iron Tits? I'll kick your ass, swear to all the gods above and below.}

Severing the connections between you and your companions, you can help but sigh. At least Darzi seems like she'll actually manage to accomplish something, but you worry she might be too busy making sure Mortia doesn't embarrass herself to really focus.

Regardless you start to wander the halls until you find the hidden doorway where you'd initially escaped the slave passages, still open as you'd left it. You duck inside, and traverse the halls back to the storage room where you'd last seen the noblewoman. Unfortunately, despite a thorough search of the room, you fail to find her anywhere. Seems she's moved on, probably returned to the party. You could try using that crystalline prism you'd found in the Varistha's chest to seek her out, but that might take more time than you can afford to waste.

>Search the party for her the old fashioned way.

Using the prism would probably eat up too much time. You'd need to meditate, and meditation always takes at least an hour. That in mind you reach into your cloak and extract the glass crown, sitting it carefully atop your head. The unwieldy monstrosity, modeled as it is on the Shah's crown, really makes you wonder how on Earth it is that Kadir manages to keep this thing on his head all day when he host court.

You leave the way you came, shutting the hidden doorway behind you and making sure it's sealed tight. You don't want anyone getting suspicious when they notice the slave passages hanging open, the last thing you want is to possibly alert anyone that anything is amiss, though you haven't exactly seen anyone wandering the halls other than that slave, maybe. You're not actually entirely certain that she was the one you were pursuing through the halls.

Finding the front courtyard is a monumental task indeed. You first end up in the rear courtyard where there's a small garden, a barracks, and a sparring ground for the palace guards. Several of whom are currently practicing. Getting all the way to the opposite end of the palace takes several minutes of walking, and several more minutes of being lost, but eventually you emerge into the foyer and find that many of the nobles seem to have moved inside, perhaps to escape the stink of burning corpses.

Gunay Darzi - Colored.jpg

The thronging crowds would prove a problem were it not for the crown on your head. They seem to part almost like water, none eager to be the one that trips the Matha and causes his crown to shatter. You can only imagine that such a social misstep would carry with it heavy consequences. Stepping outside you find that your brother still sits at his throne with his wife Hasna in hers, the latter currently glaring daggers at Darzi, who seems to be the primary recipient of your drunken brother's attention. The fact she's not actively rebuking your older brother is probably the source of Hasna's ire. You console yourself with the knowledge that she's only doing it to prevent your brother from wandering off, right?

The wooden pyres on which you burned the prisoners have been cleaned away, whatever was left of the corpses presumably dragged off with them. The stench of burning hair still hangs heavy in the air, though it's largely drowned out by the more pleasant scents of burning incense and cooking meat. You take a moment to stack a plate high with slices of juicy mutton, and liberate the handful of frosted cookies which remain unmolested on their plate. It seems as though much of the actual feasting has already concluded, so unfortunately what's left is fairly slim pickings.

You spot Mortia with a glass of wine in her hand and her crown slouched at a dangerous angle lost amidst a pile of cushions shoved into one corner of the courtyard, probably dragged outside from the foyer for some unfathomable reason. You wonder if she's drinking to dull the memory of burning a man alive. Your intuition says probably. Fulvia is lurking around your brother's throne, staying largely out of the way and out of sight. You've little idea where Chrys is, and Profectus is probably passed out somewhere.

Regardless you feel confident that your brother is well protected, and since a glance through the crowd of sycophants surrounding his throne doesn't reveal the noblewoman you saw in the slave passages you wander back towards the foyer, stuffing your face the whole way. Pani's sweet tits, you were starving.

Stepping into the foyer you find yourself assaulted by sights and sounds, the faces of noble men and women blending together. Their colorful outfits and the elaborate jewelry are almost enough to give you a headache, if for no other reason than the sheer strain of trying to process it all. Instead, you channel nature magic. It has the delightful effect of stripping away all that excess detail, so that only a sea of vaguely humanoid clouds of vys remain.

You recall that the woman seemed to have some sort of artifact, and a useful one at that. Maybe not particularly powerful though. You can't imagine that something which simply muffles sound in a small area requires an enormous amount of vys. Especially considering it should be deactivated. However, if she has one artifact maybe she has more. You spot a few possibly candidates as you wander the foyer. You spot a miniature sun in the courtyard you think is Mortia, and Profectus is probably the figure sprawled out amongst spilling enormous amounts of vys from his right arm.

You have to do a second lap around the room, you're almost surprised you haven't been dragged aside for something already, then worry that maybe you've been ignoring people the last several minutes. Horror at your own rudeness aside, you finally make a break through. Posted up in one corner of the room surrounded by a veritable sea of more or less normal figures, is someone wearing three or four artifacts. Two strapped to their thighs, one around their abdomen, and another on their back. They're not glowing bright enough to be one of your companions, in fact they're probably not all that talented magically, but they have two more artifacts than any other noble in the room.

Cutting the flow of vys the world suddenly comes flooding back, and there she is seated comfortably amidst thick pillows, the brass mouthpiece of a hookah pipe dangling loosely between her lips as she listens to the discussion of the five or six nobles surrounding her. You've spotted her across the room and she doesn't seem to have noticed you. Unfortunately you doubt your ability to approach unnoticed in a room this crowded, dressed as you are.

Zahak is going to inherit our empire after we finally do something too stupid to recover from. And he will do us proud.

What do you think will be more prevalent when that happens? Tears or laughter? There will most certainly be both.

You act like anons won't make a will to make him the family head/figure head while the first true born does everything else kind of like England's royalty.

I don't know about everyone else, but for me personally, ejaculations.

I foresee salt or anons acting like sentimental retards.
All I know is that at this point the safety fags either have up or left and the power gaming fags stopped trying to power game ever since they shown their true colours.

There's nothing wrong with that.
I mean, especially after how much time has been invested in this quest. People have grown to love the characters.

Where did I say die?
I'm just saying that if we don't manage to do something stupid enough to end the quest then I'm sure Mik will end up doing something in the prologue.

Been here ever since the second thread and I always viewed anons acting sentimental stupid since they have to make it booties or point it out. To me that always looked kinda like a circle jerk while using the tears as lube while also patting each others back.
It seems pointless to me.
