Anyone else here read these books? They sound like a great setting to run a game in.

Acidic seas with giant creatures, magic fueled through bio-"science", steamboats powered by organic engines, mildly eldritch monsters terrorizing the land with equally eldritch monster hunters and an crime underworld of necromancy and monster fighting pits.

I ask you /tg/, what rulebook would be best to run a Monster Blood Tattoo game?

First time I hear of it, I didn't find any torrent for it with seeds so at least have a bump.

I read the first one ages ago. Seemed like an amazing setting, but does it ever become anything other than "young adult fiction"? 'cause that plot was unbearably trite. Still, never seen biopunk done as well.

pic related, iirc, has a box full of tentacly goop that goes up your nostrils allowing you to sniff out monsters. He left it on too long and now can't take it off without the tentacles taking half his face with it.

Second book (Lamplighter) was pretty good, and the final book (Fanctotum), was pretty wizard too. It gets a bit darker, but doesn't really move too terribly far from it's roots, for good or ill.

As far as the setting is concerned, though, one problem is that Russamund's involvement with the world seems . . . minimal at best. He's always on the peripheries of society, and that doesn't really change that much.

As far as this is concerned, GURPS seems like the a possible choice, but Gamma-world might also work. Not sure what the emphasis should be about, though, since the world is VERY intricate, and some settings that work well with some aspects would falter in others.

Cant say it went too far from "young adult fiction". I didn't find the plot too bad, but it never quite was as good as the world it was set in.

Overall I'd say its underrated, with plenty of content to work with (those book appendixes were 1/3 of the book's pages).

I wouldn't think running the game based off the book plot and characters would be a good idea.
Part of the reason I actually think this is a good setting for a game is the fact that Rossamund doesn't have much impact. There is lots of world out there to see.

I think running a game where the players are a group of Teratologists (monster hunters) would work.
There are already "classes" of hunters, like Fulgars, Wits and so on. They can collect the titular Monster Blood Tattoos for prestige and wealth.
Alternatively they could be smugglers, dealing in rever-men and body parts to supply the pit fights.

It got rebranded as The Foundling's Tale.

And yeah, it was pretty cool.

I'm actually wondering how to stat a Rossamunderling. They're really strong, capable of shrugging off wounds that would kill a normal person, weak to monster poisons and have an advanced Threwdsense.
