Well, considering his Plan A was to nuke the plane out of spite for Nahiri, after Nissa thwarted his initial plan to re-ignite his spark he was (for a moment) considering helping out the Zendikari and the other Walkers on the plane to help contain the Eldrazi problem until he could re-build his hedron network more-so out of necessity and self-preservation than any sense of moral high ground.

But after seeing what Jace, Nissa, Gideon and co. did with the large hedron network, he immediately abandoned the "help the plebs" plan and reverted back to Plan A.

And what better way to nuke a plane super-fast than by getting TWO Eldrazi Titans to fuck the plane over? We saw how much trouble the other Walkers and Zendikari had with just Ulamog. Now we got Kozilek getting pulled out of his beauty sleep and being told to do is fucking job by some hot-shot demon on a super-high bender power trip.

Personally I'm hoping Kozilek wakes up, bitch slaps Ob Nix so hard he throws him into some random corner of the Blind Eternities for disturbing his beauty sleep, THEN goes on his plane-devouring rampage like Ulamog did.

When did Nicol Bolas become the 'big bad' so to speak of Magic, Shards of Alara?

Yawgy got rekt in Apocalypse which also ended Urza and Gerrard's storylines.

Odyssey block and Onslaught block do the whole Kamahl/Jeska/Akroma thing which introduces Mirrodin I guess as the most important outcome.

Mirrodin block, Kamigawa block, and Ravnica block all seem kind of self contained, storyline wise.

Coldsnap from what I understand is kind of a rewind to Ice Age in terms of when it happens chronologically.

Then you've got Time Spiral block which seems like the final conclusion to Dominaria's storylines, both the Weatherlight and Odyssey sections.

Then you've got la la land Lorwyn

Then finally, from what it looks to me, you can kinda consider Shards of Alara the start of modern Magic storytelling where the sets are a bunch of theme park planes all loosely connected by the super friends and Nicky B running around doing stereotypical evil mastermind shit in the background.

Returned are still soulless, and you can't be a planeswalker if you don't have a soul. It would still snuff Elspeth's spark and undo literally all of her character development if she went out that way. It'd be pointless.

Since her body was stabbed through, Elspeth might gain spiritual powers from coming back, but she's not gonna slap on a mask and become an entirely different character who happens to share a name.

Elspeth The Returned could never be a Planeswalker without a MASSIVE retcon of how Theros and the Spark work. At best, Elspeth's Eidolon would retain her powers. There is no scenario where the body wearing a mask is the walker.
