I'm thinking something like some Physics prof gaining powers to control the physical realm through a series of ridiculous equations that drove him mad. His maniacal mishaps caused alien monsters to be transported to the world via wormhole. Our PCs are students of the prof, in class with him when it happens. The first fight with the prof would be impossible to win, as losing to him gives them the powers that he has, albeit in a weaker form, with only minor wormhole creation, allowing them to summon their own monsters, which they can control.
