I'm definitely not a minmaxer when it comes to characters and I'm definitely more of a roleplayer than rollplayer, so here's how I'd play one, at least.
Making/playing a shota sounds like a ton of fun RP-wise. There's not the stigma of a loli (and IMO, having a loli character is asking for trouble no matter what the player's gender is) but there's still quite a lot of innocence/naivety and variety in concepts. Best part is, it's totally feasible if you make it realistic with low STR/CON and at least one other shitty stat, maybe INT or WIS depending on what your class is. But definitely a character who doesn't/can't resolve conflicts through brute force, instead relying on improvisation or their wits. Sure, they might take a few knocks, but they'll usually grow as a result.
A shota is also better than a loli because the chances of their being put on a pedestal or being treated like a fragile flower are much lower. They can make in-character stupid mistakes and won't be coddled by other players too much (since most players are dudes and know that little boys can be dumbasses.) Especially if they got themselves in trouble to begin with. Will some protective emotions still be there? Probably, but nowhere near the extent of a loli.
Some ideas I've just come up with:

>feral boy who wants to go back into the wild as part of his backstory (Ranger? Druid?)

I played a cheerful mage boy in Exalted before. Was fun, the other PCs were mostly nice, but he needed someone closer to his own age to be around sometimes. Wound up spending time doing maintenance on a warstrider the Dawn Caste had and chatting to the AI. After a timeskip, he came across as more mature than he looked, which was true. Ended up with a Ghost-blooded girl taking a liking to him and making the strider AI jealous, while he still never quite got what was going on.
And in a game that I'm running, there's a player with a cute paladin boy who just wants so very much to save the world from bad stuff. The player is somewhat regretting this choice, as there are several NPCs that he's been tempted to romance, but just can't with his paladin kid.

New players are subject to stricter guidelines, but in my group people playing lolis or shotas are perfectly acceptable.
Not because it's fetishfuel for some people, but because we all know not to bring magical realms into our games, and we know that sometimes people have good ideas for child characters.
Sure, the children will be coddled by the group, but they'll also be scolded for trying to do anything in combat, and the coming of age story that happens as young characters try to prove themselves can mesh with the story of the grizzled old adventurers in interesting ways.
I understand being wary around strangers, but if you limit child characters even with people you know can play it well, I feel like you're leaving shit out just because of paranoia.
There's plenty of fantasy stories that start with a weak child growing to be a young hero, molded by the various role models around him. Once you weed out the people who want to make sexualized characters, it can be neat. Give it a shot.Of course, if your group is the kind of group that WANTS sexual content in games, that's a different story.

I played a trap shota sorceror in one of my DnD campaigns. My group generally regarded my character as one of, if not the best and most fun character in the campaign. Was actually pretty fun.

One: it's a loli character; a massive red flag for anyone with a lick of self-respect.
Two: it's a loli character who is part of a monolithic, dogmatic and bigoted organisation that promotes rote over innovation. It'd take several years to even be inducted above the lowest ranks as a novice, let alone as a battlefield enginseer. A 25-year old would be a damn young enginseer. She's 13.
Three: it's a loli character that 'never once given up her personality and thus acts more human than others'. In the aforementioned monolithic organisation that is renowned for indoctrination as standard, and lobotomisation to those it frowns upon. She even has 'the Mechanicus did not really want to deal with her' in her fucking bio. In an organisation that'll turn an Imperial officer into a mindless drone for slighting it, why would it put up with this shit in its own ranks?

Entire time before we put the suit into play he'd immediately say upon entering town he was going to the whorehouse. Everytime the dm said they didn't allow kids as customers. I've done it a few times for NPCs, once for a PC of mine.
The PC was the book of eibon, and was capable of assuming the form of a preteen girl. She had lived for about 2.5 million years, assisting various sorcerers in fighting the lovecraftian horrors that stalked her world. Around the time of the russian revolution she went into slumber, and woke up to resume the fight in a near-future, kind of post apocalypse setting.
