Why is art for every single ccg/lcg so shit? Shouldn't they be hiring one good artist to do a wholesome experience? Like Tarot?

I recently thumbed through my Malkavian deck and it's horrid. It's an accurate reflection of playerbase' sensibilities, right?

It would take a long, long time to do that an keep quality up.

Take Feng Zhu for instance - dude does speedpainting for living, basically. It still takes him 8~ hours to bring a painting to completion, so you figure 1 image a day, five days a week, right? Wrong, process doesn't work like that. Client tells the artist what they want, then the artist sends back sketches, does any research as needed, then dives into the painting.

And - I want to stress this - Feng's work isn't really all that polished, and he does a lot things that aren't practical for card art that are practical for concept art, and his paintings are still another 8 or so hours from a being well polished. So now we're a MAYBE one painting every two days, if nothing happens to fuck up the artists life.

Hiring multiple artists gets around the inefficiency of relying on a single artist. And companies aren't going to pick top tier artists for an image that's going to be printed at a very small size - a lot of problems can be hidden just by making something smaller, and a lot of people will overlook or just miss fundamental problems if a piece is well polished.

But the effort could make it worthwhile given no one else does it. Or get several artists and an overseer.

>Or get several artists and an overseer.
That's basically what they do. The Art Director oversees the work of a bunch of freelancers. As I said before, the people in charge just don't care beyond a certain point - "good enough."

In-house artists would allow for more control and for the AD to push for greater quality, but that's more expensive and the returns aren't going to seem worth it to executives. They'll push for "good enough," the place where quality is high enough most people won't mind and where the price is low enough for them to stomach. And the less popular the game, the more you can expect the line of quality to drop. Quality costs money.

I can't speak to how popular the VTM card game is, but I certainly don't see them hanging alongside Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon cards at Wal-Mart. The money probably just isn't there for them to be bothered with higher quality art, since the better artists will gravitate towards Wizards since they can afford to pay better.

I think it's about the demographic that doesn't ask for anything better nor would they appreciate it

What I don't get is, why nobody tries to go full cartoony. I don't mean the pseudo-cartoon shit of FFG games, that still tries to emulate MtG uand loses out horribly. I'm talking full-blown disturtions, flat surfaces and very little shading. That shit can look amazing and takes a fraction of the time.

Netrunner begs to differ (most of the time, anyway)

Another thing to take note of is that the art quality is tertiary to most of these games - you buy them for the license and the mechanics, with card art a distant third of fourth consideration for the vast majority of paying customers. One more reason to hit the bare minimum of quality and move on.

Magi-Nation did, albeit with a fairly large dose of anime influence. That game is defunct though.
>>43622000
Well it's pretty obviously digital, but aside from that you're not completely wrong. But if you print that at 2 inches it'll look way better than it does on a 17+inch monitor.

the point of the thread is that there is none

It would probably help if you posted some. That one's so-so, not great. Most of these are just ok.
