what do you think of this trope /tg/?

Sexy.

Sexy, but probably invented by someone who didn't have to work with shelves.

I generally don't have a problem with it, unless it's extremely out of place with the environment or it's done purely for fetish fuel

not that I'm necessarily against that, but it does sort of break immersion
>>
>>43617403
I'm not sure what sci-fi you're reading but I only very rarely see skintight bodysuits as the most common clothing item, and when they are, they're usually supplemented with other pieces of clothing.

But you just brought this up so you could post that image, didn't you?

Well, judging by the rapid popularization of yoga pants, there may be something to the idea that everyone will be wearing tight stretchy outfits in the future.
>>
>>43617403
It would only work if we've eliminated the obesity problem.
>>
>>43617464
This is why liberal Muslims are amazing.
>hijab+yoga pants
>BONER PLS
I imagine it is also comfortable too. And the women are free to either cover themselves up with the hijab, or put it over their shoulder and strut.

FUTURE

NOW
>>
It would be much less pleasing to look at in real life. Even decently fit people wouldn't look to flattering if they wore it.

eh in outer space you need some sorta compression on your body so that it wont fuck itself up, modern astrangant suits use gas for compression, but some prototypes that NASA's developing use mechanical compression wear the suits clinge to their wearers body
>>
>>43617499
This is the future, and somehow, we're closer to genetic designer babies than we are to flying cars.
>>
>>43617499
In theory it could be a motivator for some to not be a blob, but I have my doubts
>>
>>43617403
Clothing serves a function first, fashion second.
There's all kinds of clothing, each has a different use.
What we will see is skintight spacesuits in the future, since they are cheaper, safer and you don't die from a single puncture.
>>
>>43617541
If a woman won't lose weight even if her life is in danger, I don't think she'll be motivated by looking bad in clothes. We'll probably just have to wait until a super science pill can burn all the excess fat away.
>>

Completely agreed. The fact that people dont wear wizard robes in public is a mistake.
>>
>>43617532
I don't understand the obsession about flying cars. I guess because they mean that energy is such an abundant resource that we can waste it on making everything hover/fly.

But wouldn't they end up being so heavily regulated that they lose most of their advantage? I guess for medium distance travel they would still be much more comfortable because you don't have to follow a curvy road but instead can follow a mostly straight line.
>>
>>43617518
Shouldn't that be how women dress in arrakis.
>>
>>43617790
Flying cars actually exist. They are inefficient as fuck, and come with the obvious danger associated with ultralight airplanes. Maybe on a planet with less gravitational pull they will finally come into use.

>>
>>43617403
Probably more due to the fact that the characters are usually /fit/ young people who look great in skintight outfits and the director/artist/ect wants to show that off.

See, this is why we wouldn't "eliminate" obesity, just re-engineer how the human body deals with it.
We need fatty tissue to make up DAT ASS and DEM TITS anyways, so why not have it ALL go there?
>>
>>43619145
Is it? That's a very tight fitting suit that appears to be leaking sweat or some unidentifiable fluid from the groin and other areas, but I think it's still technically SFW.

Because there is such a thing as too much ass.

Not to say that engineering how fat is distributed is bad, but there definitely needs to be some kind of biological cap.

Well, if you had all the obesity fat as ass & tits, they'd become incapable of movement even more quickly than if it was distributed evenly.

That said, once we hit that point of genetic manipulation, it'd be just as easy to give everyone metabolisms that just burn the excess very efficiently.

>>43620149
Agreed. Let's talk about Titan AE, and how that handled jumpsuits. Overall, the general fashion trend did not actually lean towards jumpsuits. The only time jumpsuits were very much present was when the people wearing them were in hazardous areas. I'd chalk this up to a) jumpsuits being a pain in the ass to wear and b) no one really wants to wear them. On stations, people and aliens wore what was generally comfortable to them.
Also I think there would be a very good chance that when spacefaring nomadic groups form, they'll probably be organized according to things like race and/or shared culture.
>>
>>43620391
If I remember right, most jumpsuits were worn over clothes, so they weren't the only article of clothing. The jumpsuits themselves were fairly bulky.

As for shared culture, that sounds about right from what I remember - most of the people in the fleet that we saw in the movie, for example, seemed to be fairly American, especially in their love of baseball. It makes sense, since at least one of the big ships to evacuate Earth launched from Oregon.
>>
>>43617403
>what do you think of this trope /tg/?
I like it. It makes sense to me that people would want something they can seal off from the environment in the event of danger. The advancement of metamaterials means those flimsy suits will most likely also double as actual spess suits, EW and BW fire and a means to be clothed always in a way that's not too warm or too cold.

Also, you'd probably be able to change the appearance of the surface.
>>
>>43620434
in addition, iirc one of the arguments for humans being a dying breed was our lack of homeworld. Could the presence of a recognized homeworld be a point of pride and establishment for spacefaring cultures? would races that lose or forget their homeworld be considered tarnished?
>>
>>43620456
I agree that metamaterials will play a huge role in future textiles (flexible screens were first developed in 2012 iirc, and now they're being marketed). However, the point of a skintight bodysuit is to protect from the outside. While there could be artistic pushes to adopt the retro-futuristic look of bodysuits with 1950's base colors accented in chrome, i think the general trend would be for more conservative (for their time) clothes built from metamaterials; maybe a shirt with moving images on it, like that one shirt that has a display that moves in time with music

Oh certainly, but at least in urban warfare contexts it could become en vogue to use light skins in order to reduce the bulk of armour used. And, as we all know, if the military/police use it there will be at least some posers to adapt a similar clothing style just to look tough.

Either way, I think we both agree that the number of attention whores switching their clothes to rapidly shifting 'hypnotic' stripe patterns or LOL SO EPIC edgetard propaganda slogan will be incredibly huge.
>>
>>43620462
I think your points are right, but the reason they were dying out probably wasn't cultural reasons. When you're stuck on a ship, even a fleet of ships, everything is limited. Air, food and water, everything has to be carefully recycled or traded for. Scrimping and saving, working for maximum efficiency, and you can't really have too many people in the ship at once or they run out of room and necessities.

On top of that, without a homeworld there's nowhere to really gather, nothing that strongly identifies you as human aside from the fact that you're a vagrant working among other races - and ending up being kicked around by stronger races or working jobs the others don't want, because you can't afford to be picky. There's the tarnish there - in the lack of unity aside from shame.

Err, sorry. I'm saying that with metamaterials getting more advanced people could end up exchanging traditional ballistic armour for skintight suits that do the same by virtue of being at once flexible and resistant to small weapons fire and knives while being far lighter.

You'd probably have it be layered with a carbon fiber weave forming the middle layer sandwhiched between semi-organic layers.

Thus if you want to sneak you gotta go organic. And bio-armor just doesn't work right. Bones? Superheavy skin? Nah bro.
On the other hand, you can make a rather nifty stealth suit with subtle lab grown circuitry for shit like comms and huds. You could grow a space marine biosuit but they don't work nearly as well as tech armor, so why bother when bio does stealth so much better than tech?

Rips and tears in the bulky environmental suits we have now are more than just inconvenient too, and they don't allow for fine movement as easily as a lighter suit would.

I can kind of understand it for military. At least as sort of an underware.

Basic ideas in my head tend to be that, especially in space age settings, military and explorers would always be wearing an underlayer of formfitting environmental suits as a sort of last-line of defense against vacuum. Though the effect would then be ruined with an outerlayer that would then be covered in a modular armor and kinetic shielding, and then possibly over-clothing.

Hell, I know women who prefer wearing sports bras for that reason.

If you think the actual suit would be uncomfortable, it'd be more flexible along the fascial lines of the body to allow full movement. That'd solve most movement issues. And having a suit like that on your body would help promote blood flow as well.
