The beastlands seemed pretty okay, with goddesses of the hunt like Ehlonna being around having their eternal hunting parties and shit.

Probably not a good idea to annoy Artemis if your character is male though.
>>
>>43614680
I'm enjoying it just fine.
It's not the best sourcebook I've ever read, but I'm going to just flat out admit that the best sourcebooks I've ever read don't even fall under the D&D license or any of it's knockoffs even.
It's got some cool stuff, and presents a version of the Realms closer to before 3e and 4e confused a lot of stuff while still keeping some decently interesting updates.

So does anyone have any thoughts on Rune Scribe? What classes pair well, what classes unexpectedly might pair well, power level, how to use, etc.? Also if there's a handy link to discussion of the above I'd appreciate that too.

I ran into today and the idea really intrigues me, but I want to know whether it executes well during play and what my options are realistically if I want to build a character with it. Already talked to my DM and he's on board to have the class requirements accessible in play for me.
>>
>>43614680
Wildly inconsistent in quality. Some entries are great, some are awful.

The art is hitting me with the blunt end of the uncannily valley.

Is there any 5e fishman race? I'm interested in playing a fish person in an upcoming campaign, but don't want to play merfolk. Would using the 3.5e fishmen race work fine?

Anybody, have experience playing the new arcana domain for clerics? Is it any good or is it underwhelming?
>>
>>43615076
It works rather well with the Immortal subclass of Mystic, but that's assuming your DM would allow you to play an unfinished class from a UA. It's also not terrible with a Spellsinger wizard. A guy in my group is playing an EK 6/RS 2, and it's working out pretty well for him.

the $23 I paid for it is alright.

I find the beastlands more of a pain then descending the the Abyss followed directly by a trip through baator.
There is nothing to reason with, Beasts try to kill you, the plants try to kill you, then Van Pellet tries to kill you AND mock you.

Fuck the beastlands they are the Australia of the planes.

I can't be the only one salty about the fact that SCAG didn't stat sea elves, right? I mean, the Adventurer's League ruling is that you can be play as the rare elves using PHB race stats under the hood, but that doesn't do shit for aquatics. Hell, they even made a variant for half-sea elves, but could be assed to make an official subrace? There isn't even an elf subrace in the book. Sure, elves already had 3 in the PHB, and dwarves, halflings, and gnomes just got their 3rd in SCAG, but could it have hurt anyone's feelings? Aren't sea elves kind of a big deal off of the Sword COAST?
>>43615330
This is good but not for sea elves
>>43615966
>>43615986
There's also this.

Maybe there's something worthwhile in the OP homebrew list.
>>
>>43616096
I'm not that amazing at homebrew, but with some input for the thread, I reckon I could stat up a sea elf.
>>
>>43616125
>Wis +1
>Amphibious
>Swim Speed
>Sea Elf Weapon Training: Spear, Trident, Net

I'd literally have been happy if they just cut the spells and acid resistance off of genasi and said it was an elf subrace. Of course that's no problem at home, but I sure can't use it at AL. There's also no class feature I could use and refluff (you could just run a Ghostwise by having a level in GOO warlock as a Lightfoot, even if it would be overkill for the one feature.)
>>

Picture is my first Baldur's Gate character. Needed to fill this time with more DnD stuff.

New to neither.
Been D&Ding since maybe 1998 and been doing FR off and on since maybe six or seven months after that.
>>
>>43615832
The novels are by far the shittiest part of Faerun an I recommend you ignore them entirely when exploring the setting.
Go see if you can download or read old 2e sourcebooks, which have really great detail about a lot of really cool things that most fantasy settings completely ignore.

This is especially true now when 5e's FR seems to roughly be reset to somewhere between 2e and 3e in terms of style and almost everything 3e and 4e did was completely thrown out the window.
>>
>>43616096
Sea Elves have a little bit of a grouping somewhere near Waterdeep, but have a higher concentration in the Sea of Fallen Stars or around Evermeet.

So yeah, sort of in the Sword Coast area, though Evermeet is like the width of the Atlantic Ocean away from Faerun proper.

I'd roll up Lytheri as wood elves who shapeshift into generic wolves from the MM but with the HP and Proficiency of their humanoid form.
Lytheri aren't particularly powerful in wolf form and certainly don't have a big super-powerful hybrid form.
>>
If I wanted to play a Shaman-esque character, would refluffing Cleric be the best way to go?

I wanna play a Half-Orc sailor who communes with the spirits of sea & sky to provide safe passage for ships.
>>
>>43616895
>Shaman-esque
Cleric or druid would be your best bets.
>>
>>43616895
A Cleric of a relevant sea deity or a Druid I suppose, though Cleric of a sea deity seems more up your ally.
>>
>>43616682
Man, if you recruit Dorn Ill-Khan he's gonna look stupid as hell without his unique picture.
>>
I'm pretty happy with my current game. It went from generic high fantasy (floating cities and airships) to DC's Suicide Squad in all of two sessions.
>>
What do people think about the purple dragon knight from sword coast guide?
>>
>>43617061
On-par with Champion. Decent for players wanting to play simple support-lite fighters, bad for anyone who is used the Battle Master and Eldritch Knight's levels of versatility/power.
>>
>>43617085
damn shame, I would love a good supportive fighter like the battlemaster.
>>
>>43617051
Ostrander's Suicide Squad, Simone's Suicide Squad or anyone else's Suicide Squad.
>>43617061
Has some issues, mechanically speaking.
But like most of these issues they don't come up too often in actual games and the people who complain loudest about them are the kind of really annoying min-maxing player who treats every character like a Magic deck and who rarely gets to play anyway because no many people really like that type of guy.
>>
>>43617117
Simone never did Suicide Squad

Secret Six was kind of similar though

Ostrander>>>>>>>Giffen>Ryan>>Kot>>Kindt>>>>>Glass
>>
>>43617103
It's a decent supportive Fighter.
Not massively good, but I find during actual play that just doesn't come up that often for anyone I GM or play with.
Everyone is effective enough to contribute and be useful and though some characters are often more MVP they hardly are functional enough to run entire adventures by themselves.
>>
>>43617061
It's decent. If you wanna be a 4e-style Warlord, your best bet is to be a Valor Bard and fluff your spells as battlecrys and such. But a PDK isnt gonna make your party LESS effective, and is much simpler mechanically, if that's an issue.

>>
>>43617175
Secret Six was Suicide Squad in all but name by admission of Simone herself.
Minor-league bad guys including Deadshot run around being assholes performing antiheroics and occasionally being funny.
>>
>>43617192
It's not funny or creative on /co/ and by trying it here all you're showing is that you're immature, spectacularly unimaginative, or both.
But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say you were doing it to be ironic, albeit ironic in poor taste and boring execution.
>>
>>43617184
>your best bet is to be a Valor Bard and fluff your spells as battlecrys and such.

We had a Valor Bard who's whole thing was "skaldic poetry" as his "instrument" he basically gave crazy Viking-style epic poetry quotes in mid-battle.
>>
>>43617263
Sophisticated? Naw, certainly not. This is the board of "elf slave wat do".
It's just not that funny on /co/ but /co/ thinks is hi-fuckin-larius for whatever reason and can't stop spouting it.
I mean come on; dumb meme jokes are always total shit, but can't the shit be funny at least too?
>>
>>43617117
I wouldn't really know which to pick, since I'm not that familiar. But basically it just so happened that a majority of the characters have a pretty seedy background, and the group ended up getting press ganged into doing secret military missions, while meanwhile being expendable disposable assets. We're playing right now. It should be fun.
>>
>>43617301
Ostrander's SS was great.
Probably not what the movie is going to be doing because they did some pretty fucking edgy shit; the rough equivalent to their first mission when translated into modern day would be the Suicide Squad sneaking into China to kill a team of supervillains sponsored by the PROC who are purpose-built to kill Americans.

The original first issue had them hitting a villain explicitly funded by Iran for the purposes of terror activities. The stories just got darker from there.
>>
Can you make a druid/fighter reliable? I kinda wanna do a tribal gish.
>>
>>43616959
I'll role play us as twins...
>>
>>43617331
Yeah, they weren't a Sucide Squad because they were going to kill the Joker; their supervillains were generally tied strongly to current events shit back in the 80's and they were a Suicide Squad because what they did is blatantly illegal by international standards, thus if they were found they would be disavowed and killed.
Killing the Joker is like...I dunno, something an FBI agent who doesn't care about due process would do.
You don't need an illegal hit squad for that.
>>
>>43617358
Ranger with the Outlander background could fit a tribal gish.
>>
>>43617362
Dorn won't even have the same picture; if you take a character's unique picture it picks a random other one from the list.
I think that's why they added a whole bunch of new ones for EE.
>>
>>43616412
It has nothing to do with them being the weapon's damage dice. It has to do with that damage not being part of the attack, but an additional effect of the spell.

Depends on what you mean by "hard".
Since it's homebrew there's no reason a hugely unbalanced one is unacceptable if your group accepts it; that's why it's homebrew.

There's some suggestions on making new races in the DMG (with Aasimar and eladrin being the examples) but they're pretty loose guidelines in general.

I'm running a game where my players travel through all of them, so we'll see when I'm done. Personally, right now I love Acheron, but Limbo seems cool as hell as well.

Speaking of which, had a pretty dope ass session earlier tonight. Players went through a cave in Bytopia trying to figure out what was interfering with a portal to Elysium, discovered my pet character, a Roper sorcerer. Pretty intense battle went down, where they finally killed him after the Druid went down to 0 HP at one point and the monk wasn't much better off. Roper flew off though, so I might bring him back as an undead to mess with them.

Later they went to elysium to try and recruit more people for their interplanar war (defensive war, they're all nice guys) and the monk ended up in a WWE style wrestling bout versus The Colossus, where he proceeded to roll like a god while I rolled like trash. He's now wears The Belt of The Champ, and has the blessing of the god of wrestling.

I have the base orc stats up, totally 4 points. I'm gonna have subraces which add small changes (hopefully no further than 6.5 points). What do you think?

Also, I may or may not be adding a subrace which can fly.

My favorite are traps that only one player can see so that they appear to be acting insane to the rest of the party, which might lead to the party not exactly trusting their judgement.

So maybe the party spots a chest and the rogue hastily opens it, reaches inside to get the jewels. The huge ruby he picks up sticks to him and starts swallowing him, and he realizes he's been tricked by a mimic. He panics and starts yelling for his team to assist him while running as far from the chest as he can. In his mind the ruby is still attached to the chest and is engulfing him little by little as he flails about. Meanwhile the rest of the party just watches as the rogue is screaming for help and rolling around on the floor, confused because he seems to be perfectly fine otherwise.

Relax son, the benefit of homebrew is that it needs the approval of literally none but yourself.
You're already going above and beyond the rules, so why would you need to worry about how it fits into existing ones too much.

Friends interested in starting up some games again, we've only played 3.5 before.
How does 5e compare?
>>
>>43619739
Less difference in powerlevel between the class tiers. Bards are fucking amazing now. Monks don't shit the bed. Fighters aren't useless. My advice? Read the PHB, it's in the MEGA link in the OP.
>>
When you guys make a character, do you use official backgrounds, fan-made ones or just try to make one up to fit your character?
>>
>>43619886
I just make one that fits my character. Most of the time I tweak the ones in the phb. Backgrounds aren't really a big deal and customizing them is no biggy.

It felt loose and made me flaccid. Had to close my eyes, think of SCAG, pull out and finish on it's face.
>>
So /tg/ I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to realms lore but i've been reading through the SCAG and some of the 2nd edition books (as recommended on here) trying to remedy that. However I have a question:

In the SCAG (and some 2e books) it mentions multiple time the "chosen" of the gods. and that the gods are really big on having a sort of representative in the world. I think this sounds like a really cool plot hook and story idea but here's my issue. I can't find anywhere in the SCAG it details what kinds of power these have. It implies multiple times that they have power beyond "the norm" but I have no idea how to replicate that in the game, or what I should even be shooting for. Is this the kind of thing that could be made into a feat? a boon (as per DMG rewards)? or something along those lines?
>>
>>43620058
They should be the most annoying, snowflakey mary sue-ish character possible to keep with current Realms lore.
>>
>>43620058
Boons would work, or you could just make up your own shit that would fit with the gods that blessed the chosen. *Insert item name here* of *Insert god here* could also work

Yeah, around the time of 2e the gods themselves started to get all up in everybody's business, and it was pretty much impossible for anyone to even slightly interpret a god's creed and dogma differently because he's bop down and tell you what was right if you did.
With 5e's greater focus on the church or cult of each deity, the Chosen appear to be the highest representations of divinity, though they're still mortal and can still make their own choices, as well as being significantly less powerful then they used to be.

Only class that outclasses ranger is fighter with outlander background. Problem with rangers is that they don't have any original feature that makes them important in a group.

They were pretty much the same in the playtests (only hunter in those though), I don't remember any important change.

To this very moment I thought it was instantaneous, hit and the target makes an save roll, I just read that it takes an action to activate the quivering palm, so the target has still a turn to kick the monk's ass.

Something that defines the ranger in my case, currently they have nothing like Rage or Sneak Attack that makes them special. New DM here, DMing for a group of mostly new players. How do you keep your combat from dragging on and keep it interesting? I've got a group of 6 players currently (soon going down to 4, which might make things better) and combats drag on so goddamned long and people seem to be losing interest because there's such a long gap between their turns. Any advice on how to keep things flowing better?

>>43621871
Another idea, what if the beast for the Beast Master is instructed to do a certain action, like Help or Attack, where normally it can only attack without your prof bonus to it's AC and so on, if you want it to make a different action you have to use (bonus) action, that action doesn't cost anything from the beast master and they have some bonuses like +10 speed if it's dash+disengage, prof bonus to saves and ac if dodge, prof bonus to damage and attack in attack mode? Plus of course some change like the various homebrews so that they aren't shit.
>>
>>43621793
From my experience it's a mixture of being energetic and forceful. Usually if the DM is into it and is energetic and vocal the players will feed off it. Failing that don't be afraid to skip a players turn (or at least dump them at the end of the turns initiative order) if they don't have/can't think of a move. Try to encourage them to have their turn planed out before it reaches them, create a sense of urgency.
>>
>>43621793
There are some things you can try but the most effective method is the players getting better at taking turns, and the best way to do that is practice.
Using a few strong monsters instead of lots of weaker ones can cut down on the number of turns in a round. You could also try making encounters where one or two PCs need to do something other than fight, but that can be tough coming up with something that doesn't feel like a chore and is actually interesting for the players.

I have the same number of players, and started out when they were all new to the game as well. Here are a few things that helps our group:

1. Punish them for taking too long. If it starts to lull, or they're perusing books for options or whatever, a simple "...5....4....3...." will get the ball rolling. Be consistent with how much time you give each player.

2. Have your monsters go on the same turn if there are a lot. Unless they get a surprise, (and even if they do), I'll do the surprise round, and then have them all act on the same turn simultaneously.

3. Be better and more engaging at describing what happens. I've been really trying to describe things in a more dynamic, and varied way, and have received compliments thusly.

4. Encourage the players to think about tactics and such OUTSIDE the game, or even during short/long rests. That way players are eager to try new things that they already have planned out while in combat. I've given inspiration for players discussing different strategies / combos to use, and then actually implementing them in a fight later.

5. Alcohol. But don't get wasted.

We also have a standing rule where if someone says they do something, even in jest, they have to do it. It's forced our players to really think before they speak, which has led to making more meaningful decisions in a timely manner, because they've already given it some thought.

>>43622303
Read source materials, study adventures and use premade ones, Planescape: Torment if you have the time and interest for hands-on experience with the planes (or at least one of them).
>>
>>43622303
Make a campaign about how all your players were evil bastards that were executed but somehow ended up in mount celestia in death.
>>
>>43622303
A lot of the planar creatures in 5e have weirdly low challenge ratings. You can throe slaad at them, and hordes of modrons, and probably half the demons and devils. You could also just drop them through a portal to Sigil and have them deal mostly with humanoids and low-level fiends speaking cant and calling them berks and all that.

And a word of advice from experience: I once planned a planar adventure that was supposed to involve the PCs following a plot hook into the city of Dis, but it turns out that new players are very reluctant to go to Hell, even if you assure them it's the nicest part of Hell. But they were perfectly fine going to the Abyss a session later. It's the power of words. Even though they may be the same CR, you get different reactions to "will you go into Hell to rescue your friend from the devil?" and "will you go into the Abyss to rescue your friend from the demon?"

Traveling the Planes doesn't have to be a nightmare of being terrorized by high level monsters and surviving in inhospitable terrain. Look at Dante, he went through three Planes and all he did was walk around and talk to the souls of dead people.
>>
>>43622480
It's a spell not a miracle.
>>
>>43622303

Planar Portals

basically have a ton of them around that the PCs have to get gatekeys for. This can easily be accomplished by giving them a one way key to another plane and then they have to go on a variety of adventures to find a planar portal back to their home or maybe they have to trade favors with an outsider so that they can cast planar shift on the party.

My general feelings are that you should give them access to a variety of gatetowns in various planes. Nothing too lethal but you can also provide a variety of cutscenes like the PCs manage to see a massive blood war battle from a safe viewpoint.

>>43622480

>Sharess is a demigod in a region not covered by the SCAG.
Waterdeep is in the SCAG, but even discounting that city, there has been lore since the AD&D days about Sharess worship spreading like wild fire, and other temples wanting to stop it due to it taking worshipers/tithes away from them.

If her demigod status mattered, Gwaeron Windstrom, Hoar (primarily worshiped in the Old Empires areas), Jergal (who has a minor cult following mostly in Thay and the Shining Sea area), The Red Knight, Savras, and Valkur wouldn't be featured either.

At least Valkur has the excuse that someone at WotC realized that FR has no good Storm/War deities, so they shoehorned him into that role, despite the fact his old lore specifically said he avoided war/fighting like the plague, and that his relation to storms was he helped people avoid them, not control them.

>Plus she's almost certainly Shar or Sune or Selune masquerading as a seperate goddess.
4e was almost entirely retconned out of existence, not to mention if she were Shar then she would have murdered the shit out of Sune (and probably Hanali Celanil) well before now, just as if she were Sune, Sune would have just come out and been clean about that shit, since she has no reason to hide it.

I understand that WotC is afraid of featuring the Goddess of Hedonism, excess, lust, fulfillment, brothels, cats, and pleasure seekers, but don't make excuses for them.

For as much crap as there is about the Great Wheel in the DMG, that's not the cosmology Forgotten Realms even uses, at least not anymore. Unless you're playing old school FR or maybe Greyhawk there's no reason to use it.

The real problem is that creature types, subtypes and abilities are assigned for extraplanar creatures under the assumption of the Great Wheel. If you want to cook up a custom cosmology you either have to do some serious type adjustments and refluff abilities, or incorporate significant aspects of the Great Wheel.

I know now that facing the necromancer and his 12 zombies gives the party 800 xp.

Well, GM told us that the xp was handled per "chapter", well. that "chapter" we fought, 20 goblins, 12 orcs, 1 ogre, 5 wolfs, and the last day 20 zombies and a "necromancer" with enough level to cast fireball. I mostly have it intact, but I took the one thing 4e did right and cut out most or all of the infinities. Infinite distances sound cool but are really just a fuck-you to the players. So the Spire is no longer infinitely tall, the Outlands are no longer infinitely wide, the elemental planes are no longer infinite in all directions, etc. Nobody's counted all the levels of the Abyss, but there seem to be something close to 666, and Limbo is finite but impossible to measure because space inside it is all weird.

In the case of the e. planes, while they are infinite, there's a finite amount of places you really want to go to. Same thing with the Abyss: sure, you could go to obscure layers that no-one knows about, but who gives a flying fuck about them?
Likewise, there's not really that much of interest in the outlands other than the gate towns and a few gods hiding out underground.

The way you say that makes it sound like you execute them instead of rolling fairly.

Fucking quit and find a different game.

>Can of Laughter
>Wonderous item, Very rare
>This small cylindrical iron container has a lid that can be opened to release the laughter trapped inside.
>When you do a 30' radius sphere is filled with roaring laughter that can be heard from 300' away. Each creature within this radius must make a dc 17 will save or be incapacitated with laughter for 1 minute or until the effect fades.
>For 1 minute the laughter persists and any creature that enters the zone for the first time must attempt the save listed above

A GM should never "roll fairly", you have a screen for something, anon.

I'm getting close to level 4 on my bladesinger and was wondering if it'd be better to raise my intelligence of dexterity first. They're both at 16 and would raise my AC but I only have 3 spells that benefit the increase in DC compared to having a constant increase to AC as well as damage and chance to hit with my weapons.
Alternatively I can pick up a feat but then its a question of war caster, resilience (con) or spell sniper to maximize effectiveness of gfw/booming blade with my whip.

You're still a wizard. Max int asap.

Screens are bad and GMs who use them are cheaters with power boners.

Of course there's only a finite number of places you want to go. So every infinite expanse is essentially an impassible barrier included to stymie potential explorers. You should be able to walk from the base of the Spire to a gate-town, but you can't, and that restriction doesn't seem to add anything. Likewise, you should be able to sail the river Styx or Oceanus between outer planes, because that's pretty cool, but you can't actually do that if everything's infinite.

It's kind of the opposite of the 4e/5e teleportation system, where you can't teleport to a place unless you know its magical phone number, so the party still has to explore overland to get those magical phone numbers before it can skip over that distance next time. The only way to get anywhere in the default Great Wheel cosmology is to know the location and key to the right set of portals in advance, so there's no point at all to traveling overland. It takes what's supposed to be endless wide-open vistas and makes them into something cramped and claustrophobic.

Considering 5e point buy forces you to have bonuses in secondary stats from the get-go, Int is the only that matters

You should be able to walk from Portugal to Vietnam.

How long would VHuman Fighter 1/Life Favored Soul X for Bless+Archery style+Sharpshooter be good?
Would you raise Dex and mostly focus on twinbuffs or Cha and eventually just be a more normal caster?

Yeah, it's hard to remember when playing a bladesinger, but you're still a full caster, and nothing you do with your sword is going to be as good as your spells. If you don't have a lot of spells that call for saves, you will, and you need to plan for it. You'll be swinging that sword less and less and casting more Fireballs and Disintegrates as you level up.

And this is a secondary concern, but Int is the favored dump stat of all non-wizards in 5e. Being a little better at those knowledge skills may prevent the party from doing something really stupid one day.

Yeah, and in theory you could, and that would be a great adventure. It would be extremely difficult, yes, but why make it impossible? There's just no reason.

>>43624446
I dumped strength and charisma because I didn't want to be the low int guy.
