Japanese people don't understand and for the most part don't really care for other languages, beyond the fact that they sound cool. When creating fantasy settings, Japanese commonly give things arbitrary names in other languages based purely on how they sound (or, at best, a quick internet translation). They usually use German, but Italian and French are pretty common, too. Russian is rarely used since there's a lot of bad blood between Japan and Russia, but even that happens once in a blue moon.
