Song of Swords is a realistic fantasy tabletop RPG that draws inspiration from historical fechtbuchs, weapons and armor. Its combat system is fun as balls and it can be used for both fantasy and historical/mundane settings.

Call of the Void is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Ironically it also has a very realistic combat system based around modern firefights, and can handle mundane or magical settings.

Here's a .rar archive with the newest version of the rules as well as all related current working documents: http://www.mediafire.com/download/12xqm1p2q69m392/Song_of_Swords.rar

Here's Ballad of the Laser Whales' latest version: https://www.mediafire.com/?rtbjk51jnm2wv8a

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details. Its worth a look before asking for lore questions in the thread: http://tattered-realms.wikia.com/wiki/Tattered_Realms_Wiki

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w

Roll20 Note: The Room might be empty, but the people who teach the game still browse the thread frequently. If you're looking to learn and can't catch us in the Roll20 leave a request and we'll get to you as soon as possible.

What is this Five Axioms thing?
>>
>>43479312
Gun-fu magic
>>
>>43479312
Basically it's about the Way of the Five, which is a kind of philosophy/religion that among other things also involves a martial art focused on guns. Their deal seems to be achieving a state of mild precognition through intense meditation and/or hallucinogenic drugs. The Axioms seem to be some kind of particular philosophical tenets that have certain in-game mechanical effects if focused on.
>>
>>43479312
It's hard to figure it out from what we've been told, but the jokes Jimmu put in the last pic actually helped clarify that the points are supposed to be deliberately antithetical to each other.

The Axioms seem to be totally contradictory statements that these gun-kata guys hold to be true. And by holding these contradictory concepts to be true, using self-hypnosis or drugs, they somehow unlock superhuman attributes. It sort of implies that belief and perception define reality in CotV, and that people who can force themselves to believe nonsensical things, can thus DO nonsensical things.

Truth is Falsehood
Sanity is Insanity
Freedom is Slavery
Mercy is Cruelty

These are all contradictory statements, but somehow by believing that they are true, you can rape reality into giving you whatever the fuck you want.
>>
>>43479615
The title of Axiom seems to play into this as well. After all, an axiom is something that you hold as universally true to base further assumptions upon, but that itself cannot be actually proven to be true (within the system they define, at least).

Also, I wouldn't necessarily say they're contradictory statements, but rather redefining ones. Everybody believes that, say, Truth := Truth, but the practitioner decides that right now, for him, he'll define Truth := Falsehood. And from this different premise, he's then able to come to different "conclusions" about the world around him. Since these conclusions are still technically correct when starting from his altered premise, reality then kind of follows suit and humours him.

>Truth is Falsehood

I believe in one John Galt, the Fecht-Master almighty, maker of Songs and Swords,of all things flammable and inflammable.
I believe in one Lord Jimmy Rome, the Only Buggered Catamite of Galt, born of the Fecht before all threads. Groinstab from Groinstab, Sepsis from Sepsis, true Serbian Nationalism from true Serbian Nationalism, buggered, not intercrural, cohabiting with the Galt; through him all fechts are fought. For us anons and for our salvation he came down from /tg/, and by the Song of Swords was incarnate of Sarah Gizka, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under namefags, he suffered alchohol poisoning and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into Santa Cruz and is seated at the right hand of the Galt. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his thread-chain will have no end. I believe in the Song of Swords, the System, the giver of fechts, who proceeds from John Galt and Jimmy Rome, who with Galt and Jimmy is mocked and heckled, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, black, middle-aged and southern Demographic. I confess one Bump for the forgiveness of sages and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead threads and the life of the Kickstater to come. Amen.

I think that Dessianism has a slightly greater appeal to many here because, on a purely theological basis, it's more personal and pleasant. Through the song you basically have a direct personal communion with your deity, guiding and reassuring you. That's a really big damn deal. It also helps that we've gotten an impression of Dessia's actual personality through her husband, which seems to be generally pleasant. Somebody, even a god, who's happily married to somebody can't be all bad.

By comparison, Genosism is much more distant. His communication with his adherents is filtered through the pontifatrix and the paladins, either of which most people are unlikely to ever see. Also "labour for me until you die, then do more labour" is not really the most inviting prompt, especially if you go in with the assumption that both deities are real and their religions essentially true.

Now, that's the theological angle, on the ground it may be a bit different. In that context, Dessianism kinda has the downside of their not-Gestapo violently stamping out any perceived heresy, and occasionally hundreds of people falling over dead in the street because the Silver Guard they're adherents off fell down some stairs.

That actually reminds me, I don't think we've been given any info on Dessianism's version of the afterlife, if there is one. Jimmy, any info on that?

I see you are an adherent of Domingo de Santa Clara

"We are here in this holy cave today
To celebrate the reincarnation of Domingo de Santa Clara
The man who convinced us that there is no Lord
For His name is Buddha, Allah, Shiva, YWH outside our bodies

We are God 'cause only we can create the idea
Of His existence in our holy brains"
>>
>>43484146
Genosus also allows free will, despite enforcing divine slavery upon his adherents, while Boccandessia's song could be perceived to act as some kind of divine mind control, all the while allowing people to enjoy their lives.

I'd say it's a choose-your-value situation, but that only applies to the players; religion is inherited, literally in the case of Dessianism.

>>
>>43484146
The afterlife is where things start getting murky with Dessianism. It isn't clear if she even has one.

The irony may be that while Dessia's religion is feelgood and comforting, the end-game might just be death and nonexistence, or some similar fuckery, whereas Genosus's dour, joyless faith offers a very real alternative to the eternal slumber.

Did we ever figure out what her "true form" was? There's been some allusions that her red-eyed silver-haired woman appearance is just a glamour, but I haven't seen any description of what lies under it.

She also has the most "Oh, those wacky gods!" way of ascending her favored souls. Giving birth to the reincarnated souls of past lovers is just- yeah.
>>
>>43486360
Well, one of her true(r) forms is the moon. As in, literally the rocky satellite orbiting Mundus.

>Giving birth to the reincarnated souls of past lovers is just- yeah.

If I wanted to write a novel, I'd have spent the last three years doing that instead of making a game with you dweebs.

What would I write about anyway? I've been doing the setting-building thing for so long that my mind can no longer imagine plots, just plot hooks. The world exists to me as a stationary setting, where things are about to happen but never do, where stories are begun, but never finished, left open for some anonymous DM to complete in glorious fashion.

Every beautiful plot idea I have ever had, every grand adventure, has been sacrificed on the alter of Setting. Those stories are not mine to finish, anymore. They are yours. I have given them away.

Anyway I'm 20,000 words in, I expect I'll be done by the 15 day mark. Good luck spotting mine in the anonymous mass.

Well, he fucked up the actual details as far as I can tell.

The attack was aimed at Parliament and the King. By, you know, a Catholic.
>>
>>43497953
The intention was to kill a false monarch who was a puppet of the parliamentarian forces, and replace with a legitimate monarch. The attempt narrowly failed. In the end, though, the Monarchists sort of won out. That faggot Cromwell was hanged in Chains, much as his infidel soul likely screams in agony in chains for eternity in the depths of hell for his crimes.

And as he kicks and struggles in black fire, twisting in impotent agony, begging God for release from the just retribution for his sins, he likely counts the death of the men responsible for the 5th of November among the key actors of his damnation.

Literally none of that happened, though.

Parliament was subject to the king, the king just wasn't such a tremendous faggot that he thought he could swing his dick around like fucking Philip of Spain without actually being Philip of Spain.

He also was legitimate, despite being a filthy "Presbyterian" Scot.

Then Charles came along, and he *was* stupid enough to think he was his own Sun King, and so he got killed. Then Cromwell fucked everything up (although not from his perspective), and then parliament sort of got things going in their favour again by giving James "Argh sowwy argh can' tal' righ' now, Argh' go' Fwance's dick in my mou'" II the boot in return for a much more constitutional monarch.

Still shit though. At least we got rid of the Catholics.

That would explain how such a decadent and weak race has managed to crawl to the top of the global hierarchy so well. Carried there by conquerors, superior peoples with stronger fingernails have dragged them up the mountain.

Then, atop that mountain, finally triumphant, the Englishman surrenders to the American, and then the German, and becomes a slave by his own volition.

One can only imagine the thoughts of Britons who remember their country from back when it was an actual country, and not a province of the Holy Roman Empire. How they must squirm and squeal as they see their nation destroyed, utterly, and parceled out to foreigners. I wonder if there will be an Anglo Trail of Tears. That would be the final justice. Been working on a 20 step plan to kill the Celestial Gods.
I do not know all the steps yet, but some include:

>acquire the Zoph-Koga's notes on how to summon and bind Bocanadessia
>lead the Kaselreich to conquer Illegon, then lead the Schwarzwald to Mount Genosus
>use Zoph Escher's Mastication Engine on the Moon itself
>kill Zaza Racoco, ensure he becomes a Sarturi, then return him to Dace
>convince Paladins to nuke Karthack
>get Dwarves and Iron Elves to work together to build tunnel-engines, steal for efficient siege warfare
>>
>>43513514
Probably would need a voidship from Ballad to get the Mastication Engine to the Moon. Dace would probably need to civilize all of the Endless Steppe to have enough area to do an attrition war with Eternal Karthack.

Also Jimmy, when do we get The Means of Production: A Song of Swords supplement, detailing the socialist uprising all around Vosca?

It isn't working, usually they'd have fled to a Starbucks by now.

The power of Trade School compels you! Get a job you hippy!

>>43523017
Tanks in general will be WWII-era, but scaled back a bit, since the world lacks huge continents to be raced across by armored hordes. Without the possibility of a blitzkrieg, and with war primarily being fought on islands (albeit big islands) the role of tanks changes somewhat, since they have to be transported across voidways and make amphibious landings as a matter of course.

So most tanks will not be monstrous Tiger IIs or anything like that, but smaller, but still heavily optimized light tanks. Heavy tanks do exist, but are only brought out for serious business.

For this reason, antitank rifles aren't really obsolete yet--most tanks still have armor that can be penetrated with a good shot from a 14.5mm to the rotator cuff or the viewports.

Tanks are one of the ways we think a "boss battle" in SoS could be done interestingly. Having the party try to bring down a tank would be a real challenge.

Jimmy pls I'm not even at uni yet. I'm going humanities though. Fuck your "I like having a job" bullshit.

Also, realistically speaking, the way an SoS group would handle a tank would probably be by shoving a fuckload of alcohol in the general direction of the driver the night before he got in/digging a whole fuckload of ditches and putting mines in them/getting some other group of poor bastards to deal with it/getting a prepared building to collapse on it/causing a giant distraction to get the pilots (is that what you call them?) to pop their heads out so they can shoot them/kill them with the gas that's in the air or something. They probably wouldn't actually fight it head on, honestly -- that's just how the game's trained 'em. At least, that's what my group would do.

>>

Yes, planes are around. Almost all of them are naval aircraft, though, since the islands are almost always too far away for even heavy bombers to reliably fly to and back from targets. Carriers and Zeppelin-Motherships are the most popular means of deploying aircraft.

Most ships have a ceiling height of about 300 meters, which is around the resting height of most islands. Some of the smaller ones (or ones enhanced for the task specifically) can reach has high as 500 meters, moving clear over islands except for ones with mountains or unusually high surfaces.

>>43523651
There are some islands which are basically "within sight" of each other, and these sometimes have grand bridges or even tracks between them. Railroad tracks suspended by whalebone bouys can provide reliable and fast traffic between adjacent islands. Generally though, ships are used to transport materials.

Some of the larger islands also have sufficient reason to build internal railroad networks. Many of the islands are the size of Britain or Japan, both of which had extensive internal rail networks.

And when you learn it, try to get all the training you can. Not just black plate mig, but aluminium, tube, tig...

>>
>>43524167
I thought it was actually blue-ish since there's air all around, with streams of solar winds that look like auroras zig zagging between the islands.

The black space is in the Overspace, and the deadspace where you can't see a meter in front of you is Underspace.
>>
>>43524360
Depends on the density of the atmosphere and the relative brightness of the stars during the "day", I suppose. If they're about as bright as the sun is here then there would be some colouration in the lower layers, I suppose.

Then again the whole shit's magic out the ass, so I dunno.
>>
>>43524289
This guy knows. I'm taking welding classes right now, going for a certificate so that when my History degree is done, I can do research while not living in a cardboard box.

>>43524075
It's essentially space, with a few differences. The closer you get to islands, the bluer the sky becomes, as molecular diffusion from the islands reflects the light from the stars differently. Some have different colors than blue, but most are blue.

Additionally, there is a consistent "down" in CotV, which is Underspace. Underspace sort of looks like smoke in a glass, except it's black, and sometimes red light shows from beneath it. This black smoke has a bit of "give" to it, but not enough to sustain a human body, though a piece of paper might float on it for a time. The smoke is called Dust, or Void-Dust/Voiddust/VoidDust by sailors.

Up above there are eyes (stars) which look down on the world, and occasionally "week" (rain) in a torrent of water. What people in CotV call Stars aren't really like stars as we know them at all--they're only about a kilometer wide, and high up in Overspace. And while they produce an enormous amount of light, they only do so for a set number of hours every day before going dark.

>>
>>43525220
Well, to understand attacking any armored vehicle, it's best to do away with some misconceptions.

A tank isn't a monster with hit points. You don't just shoot a tank over and over until it explodes from collective damage. Tanks have internal systems, and when those systems are damaged or destroyed, it loses functionality.

So if an M3 Stuart comes over the hill, and you have an antitank rifle, you don't just shoot at it at random, you figure out what you want to do, and aim accordingly. You aim for the seal between the turret and the tank, damaging the rotator cuff. Now the turret can't turn as quickly. You quickly gtfo of your position because your weapon smokes like a volcano and you don't want to be obliterated by cannon fire. One of your friends in a nearby position takes aim at one of the MG-Pods and fires, penetrating through and probably destroying the weapon. Some of your friends rush the blind spot with bundles of grenades or molotov cocktails, hoping to destroy the treads or envelop the vehicle in flames before it can turn and mow them down.

If you had someone with a recoilless rifle or a rocket launcher, he would get close enough to guarantee a hit and fire at a good angle at the side or back armor, aiming for the engine, the fuel storage, or the crew compartment. This kills the tank.

Basically you have to pick specific targets on the vehicle to attack to create openings for a killshot. A tank outranges most of your AT-weapons with its machinegun, so you can't just hang back and try to fight it at range, but at the same time you can't close with it without concealment or covering fire.

It'll be fun, and typically mortal.

>>43511302
Sure, gimme a minute.

>You don't just shoot a tank over and over until it explodes from collective damage.

Knights? What's that?
>>
>>43525482
Well, not in SoS, I just mean in general, many games treat vehicles as though they aren't made up of parts, like any amount of damage done to the roof of a car will cause it to explode, etc.

I'm just setting straight that we're treating vehicles the same as we treat people, more or less.

An interesting campaign idea that I've been playing with would be a Tank game, where the PCs are all different positions in a tank. But that seems a bit unfun, so a more likely idea would be 1-2 PCs per tank, one as the commander, another as the gunner, and have the party be a tank squadron.

>>
Has the Void has a HMS Dreadnought equivalent?
>>
>>43526341
It's less of a case of who's going to stop you, and more a case of who's going to sell to you. Chiron's laws do not extend past Chiron's borders, same for the CSA, or Rahoo, or The Hive.

Nobody can really stop an independent Captain from doing whatever he wants in international waters without risking the wrath of the Free Men. That said, if you want a tank, you have to buy it from somebody, no? And most countries will only sell to their friends.

So, if you're vaguely aligned with Chiron, maybe they'll sell you a Panzer, but they'll expect you not to use it to kill their friends, or you won't be getting any replacement parts.

Even within these countries, there are no laws regulating the ownership of tanks--how the fuck would a civilian own a tank? Who'd he buy it from? It's like US regulation regarding flamethrowers.

Sure, on a federal level, it's perfectly legal to buy a flamethrower, but nobody produces flamethrowers. You'd have to have gotten one from the army, but the army never sold its flamethrowers, so if you have one, you either stole it or bought it from someone who stole it.
>>
>>43526473
Surely there are Free Men enclaves that are big enough to produce things like bespoke tanks?
>>
>>43526643
Anon there's quite a long chain of production and organisation to end up with tanks, and they're not very useful when you're not at war so unless you have a huge market or a government to sell to building tanks isn't usually that profitable. There's also the small mater of you making weapons for people and this is a great way of painting a target on your head if things start to get nasty.

Potentially, though neither in large numbers, nor on the same level as tanks produced by the primary States. It's plausible that a small nation might produce tankettes for private sale, or, on the case of a particularly powerful independent island, full-blown tanks. Some might produce licensed copies of Chironite or CIS tanks, taking some of the weight off but limiting their potential market.

Second-hand or salvaged tanks are also probably a large market. Same is true with aircraft and ships.

Oh well, nazi royalty it is.

Working on this single page taught me many things.

I can't write, I can't draw and I can't tell a story.

Is this interesting start?

Bit flippant for someone about to be executed by... uh... Jimmy, what does being exposed to void dust actually do?
Anyway, it would probably be better to find some way other than internal monologuing to convey exposition. A bit of pre-execution dialogue, perhaps? "Any last words? You could at least explain to me what you hoped to accomplish," sort of thing. Or a flashback- actually show us the assassination of the guy. Or him telling the story over a few beers after his inevitable rescue. This flippant monologue just lacks the necessary gravitas for what I'm certain will be a major plot point/antagonist.

Thanks for the help.

I have the text and text boxes on different layers, so I can easily just take them off and replace with something more interesting.

The only idea I had was that someone is about to be pushed off to underspace, and then more trouble emerge.

I'll try to come up with something once I wake up.

The Chironites don't officially have royalty anymore (the child of the last King joined a monastery to officially end the royal line) but obviously any child whose family was part of the original push for power in the State would functionally be royalty, and relatives of the old king who didn't have the nuts to commit genetic suicide could still theoretically be royalty at some future date.

Maybe one of them. I remember loading a rifle that had an internal magazine by dropping individual rounds into it. The sound was very distinctive. I think it was an SKS. I also remember a pillow in a loft. I think I was hiding, or waiting.

It's gone. I'm gonna make pho.

The fortress-city of Tenja. A lonely monstrosity of stone and steel in the heights of the Tiger's Gate--the one pass into Osterbija large enough for an army to pass through.

The city is cold, blanketed in snow the year-round, though it is much worse in winter.
It's January.

You sit in the tavern by the fire, your coat hangs by the door, as you cozy up to the flames. You are not used to the feeling of warmth on your face. Your time at the castle has numbed you.

You are Niko, a servant, down from the keep for the first time in many months. Your body bears the scars of your terrible service. The horrors you have witnessed in that black fortress would cause any person to cringe.

You huddle closer to the fire. It has been so long since you have felt warmth in your flesh. You shiver.

Should you

No, normally you would never come down.
But this time... There is black work afoot, and you had no choice but to become involved. Someone contacted you, seeking to undo the Count.

The Count... Well. The Count speaks for himself. And his brother is a maniac. You could not say no. You have come down into frightful danger, and now you warm yourself before a fire in this dingy pub, a dog-fighting pit, if you've heard right. You don't get out much. They don't let you leave.

You approach the woman, who turns to face you as you sit down on the stool next to hers.

She coos in another language that you don't quite understand. Some of it seems to be a whistle, like the singing of birds. You gather that her name is Matoko Maloko, and that she thinks you are cute. Cute!

She pays for nine drinks--and then also for yours. You don't recognize any of them. You don't drink often. You start feeling dizzy after the third, and are quite senseless by the fifth.

You return to your senses in a bed in a back room. You feel exhausted. The Zell is lying next to you, smoking a cheroot through a holder. Your head is resting on one of her breasts. It's like a pillow, except everything smells like quinine. You sit up. She gives you a light smile.

"Sorry sweetie, I was turned down by the Count, and I needed a sweet boy like you to let me forget. Nothing personal." She gestures you away, and sinks back into the cushions on the bed.

You dress, which takes about fifteen minutes, and return to the common-room, feeling a bit foolish. Sleeping with a Zell, what will your brother think?

You're having trouble thinking. You don't get out of the castle often. You feel uncomfortable being this... Open. Everyone is looking at you.

You're supposed to be meeting with some people. Your brother told you it was important.

Oh right, the conspirators. They're trying to bring down the Count. They want you to help. They're probably wondering where you are.

You get up and head into the back room, and say the words to the maid there to assemble the group. She runs off.

A quarter of an hour later, they start filing in, entering and then confirming their identities through passwords. You wait, looking at pale hands on the table as they enter. They don't seem to notice you. One of them the highest ranked, Baron Suvarov, asks who you are.
"I'm Niko," you answer, "the serving boy."
"Oh, of course! You have done the right thing, Niko, by coming here."
"I know. Thank you." You nod. You are scared. You've never been exposed around this many people.
>>
>>43536576
Wait hang on that's nice and all but did we get to touch her ears
>>
>>43536728
You remember biting her ears. She screamed very loud, you were worried she had hurt you. she didn't seem upset, though.

They were different than you thought. Thicker. Less flexible. Maybe it's just necessary to keep them from drooping, but they seem more like noses than ears, in terms of consistency.

"We are gathered here," the Baron says, "to rid ourselves of a tyrant and a monster."

"Ratko Abuslav," the man says, after a moment's hesitation. "Let us not beat about the bush. The demon of that black tower, the gargoyle of Tenja."
Some of the men jeer. Lieutenants, even a Captain from the garrison. A few wealthy burghers and their bodyguards. The Baron himself brought two knights.

"this boy has found us a way into the castle, where we can depose the tyrant without incident. With him and his bastard brother dead, we will demand that the King install one of us," the Baron straightens himself, "as the new Count. Then, we can finally end this pointless feud with the Marju. I plan to act as an intermediary with the gracious Khan, to usher in a new era of trade and commerce that will surely benefit us all!" the Baron raises a cup, and the rest of the men present raise theirs, "to progress!"

You sit, unsure of what to do. Finally, a maid enters, bearing a long paper-wrapped tube with roses extending from the end, and a box. You look at her.

"Ah, boy, these are the tools your contact said would enable you to, ah, help us with our 'little problem,' eh?" the Baron grins at you, "your reward shall be great, you know. I saw you with that Zell earlier. When I an Count, I will see you married to her, if you'd like. You could have children with her, dozens of them. You're strong of shoulder--very much so I imagine, given that huge outfit of yours! I will see them all educated and raised as though they were nobles themselves, and they will serve as my men at arms. Would you like that, son? A happy family, and bright futures for your children?"
"Yes, you say, meekly, looking at the packages before you. "I would like that very much."

You unwrap them, as the conspirators toast each other and laugh. You think of Maloko's smile, and feel something pressing out through your eyes. You've felt that feeling before, but you've never been able to touch your face before.

It's wet. Why is it wet?

You finish unwrapping the long package, but leave your friend where it lay in the paper. You open the box, and lift your face out of it, and set it on your head. It takes you a moment to fix the clasps and straps. Some of the conspirators stop laughing and toasting as they see you.

Your face is on, now. You can't feel the cold air on your tears anymore. You can't feel anything. Your breath is the rumbling, resonating rasp of a dying beast. Your voice is a terrible booming echo.

"Traitors," you say, "you have confessed to your treason. Now, you will die."
The Baron screams as you lift your poleaxe from its paper coffin.

Behind them, a pair of maids slam the door to the backroom shut, and deadbolt it.
