ARCHIVES - THEY'RE ON SUPTG JUST GO FIND IT YOURSELF
You cross the small space in the center of the room to stand by your one and only battleship.

She pointedly looks somewhere else.

“Arizona, can I talk to you outside for a second?” you ask quietly.

She makes no reply, but rises and walks away from you, heading for the door on the opposite side of the room. You walk the long way around the table, hustling at a fast limp to catch the door before it hisses shut. Arizona's waiting for you in the hallway, back against the far wall. Her arms are folded across her middle, hands gripping opposite biceps - not quite crossed arms, but not very open, either.

“Uh.”

Her eyelids lower a fraction of an inch, focusing her flinty gaze even more.
>>
You keep from biting your lip through sheer force of will as the scene from the infirmary plays through your mind again; tears streaming down Arizona's face as you laid into her, the bloodlust of battle still surging through your veins - telling her that she wasn't your god damned mother, no matter what she might think. You can apologize for the tone, but in truth you don't regret the outburst - you *can* handle yourself and she was out of line laying one upside your head - especially after that cerebral hemorrhage you suffered.

One glance at Arizona's smoldering eyes tells you she'll see clean through that kind of half-assed apology. She's never spoken a word to you, but you've always understood her easily - and it seems to work both ways, even when you wish it wouldn't. And if what Naka said about her feelings towards you are true -

- Naka. That's right. She went and took it out on Naka, too - blaming the subordinate for the master's mistakes. That needs dealing with, too.

[ ] Explain flat-out who and what you are - not a rear-echelon motherfucker, no matter how much they want to make you one. You'll exercise due diligence, you won't take stupid risks, you'll shape up - but you are NOT a god damned paper-pusher, and it's not in you to become one. (She is NOT going to like hearing this.)
[ ] ... it might be best to get it out in the open. Raise the issue of her putting you on a pedestal. Others have sacrificed more than you, and there will be more and greater in the days and weeks to come - she has to get her perspective right before then, or it'll tear her apart when you finally DO lose a shipgirl... or you.
[ ] Challenge her about hitting Naka - put HER on the defensive to start with. That wasn't right, and she damn well knows it.

This seems to be the most tactful option, but it does need to be said that some of her actions were out of line, such as completely blaming Naka. Likewise, a reconciliation of some sort does seem to be in order

I don't like it, but it really should be said. The fact that we haven't lost any shipgirls yet is amazing, but we can't guarantee it won't happen. And we've been losing human crew and airmen too. She doesn't need to fuck off, we don't need to go all stone-coldhearted we just need to accept that the world is just a bit fucked for now

We should delay the Naka discussion until after we get over this hurdle. Might want to see if she feels bad about hitting Naka on her own before chastising her about it.

I don't think option 1 is going to work because she knows damn well about our inability to be a paper pusher. It's writ large all over the base and her face. Option 2 is the more reasonable answer.

Option 3 should be saved for the inevitable moment where Arizona claims to be in complete control of herself. That's when you can drop the "what about what you did to Naka?" question on her. But starting off with that would be less useful.

Plz. She knows who you are and what you have to do, she's been stalking around Settle enough.

She already knows hitting Naka was wrong. Belaboring the point is useless, beyond forcing her to apologize to Naka and have them buildup more friendship.

It's unfortunate that it's come to this, but the second option is avoiding the problem by pushing the blame on Arizona's expectations. The problem is Settle, and the sooner she realizes that, the easier things will be for the both of us.

The bridge hit's the one where he got that piece of Shrapnel, right? (Only reason I remembered is 'cause it made me think of Venom Snake)

The question is, though, would they have done it if you hadn't told them? What would've happened if the Monitor (I think it was a monitor) didn't go down in the strike Settle ordered? Would Iowa have had a harder time defending LA when Higgins went DIW?

It's just me speaking here, but I think it takes a certain kind of person to give that kind of order, with several injuries, under pressure, and knowing that lives will be lost, but more will be saved.

Which brings me to another question. About the families of Settle's (former) crew (other than that girl Hate was dating. We all know how Hate is). What do they think of Settle? Do we have an idea of their opinion on the man who led their loved ones to their deaths and got praised for their efforts?

It absolutely does. I'm not saying that Settle was useless in that fight, but leadership like that is VERY EASY to feel like you could have done more, like you didn't do enough.

As for what everybody thinks about Settle, we don't know. He probably intentionally tries not to find out.
It's weird thinking that people like Mustin's skipper fought using lessons and tricks that his ship pioneered by fire.

>>
>>44674154
Well anything to do with the HIGGINS I mean. From an outside tv helicopter perspective Settle is obviously responsible for missile massacring the coast guard cutter. But some of the other things like moving into torpedo range would not be so obvious. As far as the command decisions he personally made on the bridge that led to his crew's deaths those combat logs are likely classified under the bus at this point.

And even if that wasn't classified are you really going to tell families why they have to bury people in a shoebox and who pushed the button to make it happen? How much detail does the military disclose about that sort of thing? (I honestly have no idea).

Battleships: United States Battleships, 1935-1992 by William H. Garzke, Jr. and Robert O. Dulin, Jr. one of dads old naval academy textbooks. Has a brief section on battleship development prior to 1935, but it mainly focuses on the North Carolinas, South Dakotas, Iowa, and Montana class battleships. Has blueprints and dimensions for each ship of those classes along with hypothetical redesigns such as missile battleships and hybrid battleship carriers that the navy toyed around with in the 20's and 30's.

It doesn't have full blueprints, but it does get into the reasons behind the various design decisions for every class of US battleship from the original Texas and Maine all the way up through the Montanas and the various rebuild proposals of the 50s through 80s, plus the most exhaustive list of specifications I've ever seen for them, including detailed weight breakdowns and stability information.

January 17, 1950. Missouri ran aground while sailing through Chesapeake Bay (if I'm not mistaken) and ran aground. She stuck in the sand/mud/silt/whateveryouwannacallit for two weaks before they got her out, and she had to be sent to dry docks for repairs, where they had to take out the hull of the incomplete Kentucky to accommodate her. Her captain was court martialed, stripped of his command, and basically, any advancement in his military career ended because he ended up beaching the last battleship to be completed by the USN that also happened tobe the ship where Japan signed the surrender.

Issue is that is a LOT of eggs in one easily-targeted basket. Trust me, I would LOVE to see battleships make a comeback, but it's just more cost effective to have 4-5 missile destroyers, rather than one bigass ship.

Of course, I wonder what'd happen if we got the fairies to fit the girls with nuclear power systems?

Guys, nuclear reactors, or hybrid engines? Which'd be better? Honestly, my money's on the hyrbrid batteries; they're less of a hazard in combat. How're modern ships powered anyhow? Still oil-burners?

Surely less so than a nuclear reactor though? It's one thing to have them on carriers, as they're not expected to be in range of anything, or stop anything before it gets through to them, but on an armoured cruiser or battleship?

>>44674880
>>44674860
Huh, I guess that kind of makes sense. Still, there has to be a more efficient way to move the fleet than fossil fuels? There must be?

>>44674881
Okay, that HAS to be bullshit. I know if you crack a battery's casing it can be bad, but they wouldn't sell something THAT dangerous, surely?

Lithium batteries are normally quite stable. If you overload them, they become significantly less stable. This is very hard to do, by the way.

British shipgirls bullying Russian shipgirls when?

Because Wisky was completed before Mo, even if Mo had her keel laid down earlier.

Why is our next DD as big as a BB?

Same amount of energy stored, but a grenade releases it in microseconds whereas a battery on fire will burn for seconds.

Because Russia cannot carrier. Since they din't have planes for fleet defence, they needed ALL THE SAMs instead.

blast a shell hole in a pebble bed reactor and some hot water comes out.

poke a lithium battery with a .22lr and you get a fire that burns underwater, emits clouds of bone-meltingly toxic gas, and can only be extinguished by flooding the compartment with halon, killing any crew who didn't skedaddle.

OK, so we suck /now/, but that;s due to the MoD's strict cross-service "we can't have nice things" policy.

So, as a little update to our campaign, we got through the first mission all right and wiped out all the Abyssals. Some highlights:

Spee and Alabama totally failing some critical social checks, resulting in Bama princess carrying a naked Spee across our carrier mobile base for the whole crew to see.

Victorious becoming our de facto leader and dropping spaghetti EVERYWHERE. The high point (or low, depending on your point of view), is when she accidentally faceplanted into an ammo crate, spilling bullets everywhere, which somehow got recorded and went viral on youtube.

Hoel obtaining shit tons of ammunition for the fleet by literally ripping the shells right out of poor Abyssals.

Tashkent causing an Abyssal to faint by literally circlestrafing it to death. (pic related)

Vetehinen stabbing everything. EVERYTHING.

I actually plan to partly address that in my writefaggotry. Isn't it FUCKING AMAZING how the imminent threat of destruction and horrific fates worse than death can reverse 30-something years of military fiscal policy!

I'm not going to insist PF includes this ship/girl in the quest, because I fully understand he's trying to fend off character bloat. But that doesn't mean I can't let you all know how goddamn awesome this ship was.

Check out her final fight.
