Honestly the Buster Sword is really more of a showpiece than a proper sword, according to the Compilation. Zack's mentor's father had it given to him as a present when he went to join SOLDIER.
He usually just kept on his back, and used the standard issue sword. Though about the handle, IIRC, he used that to block a hit from Sephiroth during a training session, so it's pretty sturdy.
When Zack got it, he only used the blunt edge, but then when Cloud got it, he started swinging it around like it's a goddamn baton.

Large amounts of every media is shit, most of them mediocre and a some good ones with few great ones. Thing is between medias different things are consider to be good and generally aim to please the audience that consumes most of the said media. In movie's case it's easy and casual entertainment that doesn't deviate from the formula, better if it has established characters and/or common tropes. If you mean the tanky character, then it works because maybe they got lucky and threw it just right to distract them.
If you mean the Armored Fighting Vehicle, then no, that wouldn't work, as the thrown rock would 1, have nowhere NEAR enough damage to bypass the Damage Barrier on the tank, and 2, the tank isn't what needs to be stopped, the operator is.
