The Imperial Guard fights on the planets of the Imperium and protects it from attacks on the ground by Orks and Heretics and suchlike. But the thing is that said threats can't just walk from one planet to another. If they want to get from system to system and planet to planet they need to get on a ship, fly to that planet and land on it. As such to defend the worlds of humanity the best way to go about it is to blow up their ships (and their cargo of evil jerks) in space before they arrive. Likewise we can't take the fight to them without doing the same so we can keep them safe before the kiddies can go do their lasgun and tank thing when for some reason we can't just efficiently blast them off the planet from orbit.
This is not to say that the guard is not USEFUL. It's simply the fact of the matter is that wars across the Imperium are ultimately fought and won in space and they should know that.
Also: this does not apply to space marines as they fight in space as well.

While I respect the Lord Admiral for both his position and his opinion, there are two points upon which his argument falls apart:
i) Orbital bombardment of planets, while undoubtedly effective, is inaccurate at best and destroys vast areas of otherwise useful land for agriculture/industry/etc. As well, the munitions required are costly and require thrones. It is better to employ the Guard who pay the cost of taking/holding worlds using the Emperor's currency.
ii) You sound like a turtling faggot. Git gud, scrub.

Soft fleshy humans fight on the planets and in space around the Imperium and protect it from attacks by Orks and Heretics and suchlike. But the thing is that said defenders can't just walk from one planet to another throwing stones at the Tyranids. If they want to get from system to system and fight effectively when they get there they need the glorious works of the Omnissiah. As such to defend the worlds of humanity the best way to go about it is to obey the Magos and construct the biggest, most destructive, holiest artifacts of the Machine God. Likewise it's most efficient to build these things behind wall of squishy mortals with lasguns and tanks and spaceships when for some reason we can't just efficiently blast them off the planet with a virus that turns all flesh into chocolate or use our own armies of Skitarii and automata.
This is not to say that meatbags are not USEFUL. It's simply the fact of the matter is that wars across the Imperium are ultimately fought and won by the Adeptus Mechanicus and they should know that.

Mechanicus Explorators tend to mostly add STCs to the Imperium, not worlds. Certainly, many STCs are worth more to His Imperium than another agri-world, but it's still the principle of the thing. When was the last time you heard of a new Forgeworld being founded?

You can fight in space all you want, but the only way you can actually conquer or defend a planet is to put some boots on the ground. Just see what's happening in the middle-east right now, for example. It's not NATO and Russian airstrikes that are winning the war against ISIS(though they certainly help), it's the local soldiers.
