Yesterday like many people I had a small wager on the FA cup final. I bet like i always do directly from the first page, click the odds of whatever team i wanted to win and then hit confirm on the betting slip that comes up. I placed a small £10 wager on Man utd to win the FA cup. The bet was accepted and my betting slip showed i had bet on Man Utd to win " match result".
Imagine my surprise this morning when I discovered my bet actually lost. So obviously I contacted Betfairs Cs team to ask why and was told that my bet only covered the first 90 mins. Now before you all say yes this is standard practice, hands up I wasn't aware of this rule I Used Betfair for ages and never once had this issue arise nor when I bet did was there any mention anywhere of the 90 min rule.
After a lengthy discussion with the CS team and using the Fa trophy match as an example I was able to demonstrate clearly that there is an issue with their site. I could go onto the front page select a team and place a match result bet and and no time was there any mention of the 90 min rule , nor a warning that the bet only covered the 90 min rule.

Once I pointed this out Betfair immediately gave me a £10 goodwill gesture "free bet" . I accepted the goodwill gesture and said to the CS representative I was speaking to that he should really escalate this issue in the company as I was sure that I wasn't the only one who had been caught out like this. His reply shocked me as he then informed me that this happens to a lot of their customers and admitted that unless I clicked on the actual market I wouldn't of seen this 90 min rule.
So basically Betfair are more than happy to accept a bet placed from their main page knowing full well there is a good chance anyone placing the bet would be unaware of the 90 min rule. Once you consider how many people who don't bet regularly but only on special events would have done exactly the same method of betting as i did you have to wonder how much they racked in in "lost bets this way" . The gambling commission in the UKis very clear on the matter stating gambling must be conducted in a fair and open way ..by not alerting a customer to the 90 min rule when placing a bet from the front page they are not being fair nor open. Even my bet clearly stated it was match result NOT the first 90 mins.
I am sure some of you will feel that Betfair acted correctly as you were aware of the 90 min rule, but as I explained and demonstrated to Betfair ( which prompted their admission they knew about this issue and it catches alot of people out) it is quite possible for someone to place a bet and have it accepted as a "Match Result" bet and not once be told it only coverss the first 90 mins .
