Because in boxing because there is no ground fighting they get to take a break as they get to their feet and the ref gets to check if they are conscious enough to continue fighting.
In MMA a fighter gets knocked down he can survive and even fight from a bottom position. Because the action is still going the ref cant pause midfight to give a fighter an 8 count. Imagine if in boxing a guy got hurt but was still throwing punchs back but the ref gives him a 10 count anyway. That doesn't make sense.

Based on current scoring, I think it was a fair split decission. Belcher did some weird backflip whatever to avoid a potential takedown by Akiyama and then avoided being in guard position. Plus the superman punch. Do you know what bothers me? The lack of draw results. It's okay not to win nor lose. There are a lot of fights that end up being hugfests, or complete back and forths or somewhat balanced which should be a legit draw.
