I pay for no ads. The shows would get made, but I'd have to see ads. That's the difference. I get BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, the HD versions and the Red Button for the cost, no ads, and the TV shows, many of which are copied by USA.
The Office was a British show, copied by USA. Red Dwarf was British, it got a very short lived American version. I won't say Sherlock as that wasn't a show per se by the BBC when you did your versions and it's variants.
I don't mind, it's cool. I do like Doctor Who, especially the Warhammer 40k homage episode. But I stopped watching it before the end of the season with Smith and it's not on Netflix. Sherlock is cool too, but don't watch it unless it's on and I see it.
The thing Americans take the piss of, and maybe quite rightly, is that you cannot OWN a TV without paying a license. It's illegal. Even if you never use the TV and only use it for video game consoles, or as a PC monitor.
But, the thought is, if you have a TV, you can access the shows, and the fee is to pay for it. In fact, BBC has had to do some major cuts recently, to complaints, because of the rise of laptops, tablets and computers taking over from TV's. Since you don't need a license then, you don't fund them and you can watch the BBC using streams or the BBC website itself.
But the lack of ads and original drama is worth the price.

awwww yeah man, i was late to the party (~2008-09 was when my local PBS ran a marathon of series 1 and eccleston became "my doctor" and i was like "hey they ripped off that thing i did with their 'bad wolf' thing") but i had officially caught up and started watching live with the 09 specials into the end of time.
then with smith/11/hipsterpants my first thought was "wow, this guy can actually act if he's given quality scripts" and despite the childish hammery (the #1 cop out for dr who being shit is "it's a children's show" which begs the question "what kind of shit do we shovel down the faces of our children?" but i digress...) i had high hopes for the show. i bought into the moffat hype, i was expecting "deep plots" and a "darker vibe" and all that, and i remember being legit hyped all "there's a pandorica opening today" when i was readying my proxy to fire up the iplayer....
but then it just kinda wibbly wobbly timey wimeyed. and i was like ugh. then i started reading laurence miles' blog ( http://beasthouse-lm2.blogspot.com ) and he described the nature of the beast that is moffat and i was like "oh...." and season 6 started and LOL THE DOCTOR IS DEAD. FOR REAL DEAD. and then river song was all over the place and despite having a raging boner for karen gillan i couldnt wait for the "pondscum" to go, and uhhhh yeah then dr who became something i ostensibly claimed to love but only hate-watched out of obligation.
now it's pretty deece and i think capaldi is better than hipsterpants and i dig the production values and i am so glad they didnt kill off the timelords cuz im sick of omnipotent/omniscient superhero dr who (hell capaldi turned the phallic symbol sonic screwdriver into sunglasses, and i can dig that metaphor-shift) and uhh we'll see if dr. who fandom is truly about having infinite hopes crushed by the weight of an international brand + lame fans!

Yeah. BBC system is great, it's worked, and it makes good shows. Granted, they're becoming stupidly left-wing, especially Casualty/Holby City. I dunno why we need two Hospital shows, but whatever. Oh and Eastenders, but I kinda can accept that. It's suppose to be East London, so blacks, muzzies and shieks is acceptable. But in Holby or whatever, they've done an episode on a girl nearly killing herself taking drugs to become a man. Had homosexuals being bullied. Had Muslims accused of terrorism and beaten up. Shit like that. But then they also did an episode where terrorists literally did attack the hospital. Oh and that black guy is now dating the boss. Oh and we have a fat nurse who is a stereotype "bubbly".
