Packaged with a ton of proprietary garbage including a custom filesystem and other shit I don't feel like even looking into. No thanks. And if I were to strip OSX from it, I'd rather save a shitload of money buying something I actually want.

Unix doesn't shit itself over hardware if you don't get shit abandoned hardware with no driver support. Unfortunately it IS difficult to find a laptop that doesn't have shit hardware. I hear thinkpads are great these days. I'm using an XPS13 2015 with Fedora at the moment (100% because I like dnf) and despite all of the complaints from others I've had literally zero issues since formatting Ubuntu away. Only needed one proprietary driver for the wifi/bluetooth chip from rpmfusion that I could easily swap for $30~ if I cared. Done two major version upgrades and have installed updates daily with zero issues.

I'm considering trying out NixOS even though it's young. What CS major doesn't experiment? That's the biggest confusion I have with complaints about hardware issues. They're not at all like they used to be, and being capable of solving problems is part of the field. It's not exactly sysops, it's just computer proficiency.
>>
>>8139109
>and I don't hotglue my figures.

>>
>>8139136

>>
Anyone know a good desk arm I could use to hold a textbook? Desk here at college isnt large enough for everything I need to use it for, and instead of buying a new desk, I figure I could just get something to efficiently save space.
>>
>>8139136
Alienware is overpriced fancy trash, and more importantly, you don't want a dedicated GPU adding heat and noise while cutting your battery life in half. Maybe if you do heavy simulations often, but then you'll probably reach the limits pretty quickly anyway and would be better off running work remotely on a GPU compute node.
>>
>>8139112
I had my experimenting days, but now I just want things to go smoothly so I can easily and consistently do my work. Even recently my desktop Ubuntu install, which doesn't have working wireless drivers that don't cause constant kernel panics, completely shit itself and had to be reinstalled. I'm still not sure what happened,

Nice, I like the amount of desk space you have. I suggest putting your tower on the ground, elevated just slightly if you can to avoid the carpet. This way, you'll have a tremendous amount of work space. Also, is that a bayonet?

Why do people do this? At least ugly backlighting helps when you can't find a stupidass nonstandard media key in the dark (I still turn it off always when I end up with a backlit keyboard). It seems to me like it screams "I look down at my keyboard regularly." Not trying to be insulting, it just seems like even for someone who cares about aesthetics there are much nicer looking things to invest in. Personally, I like all of my hardware to be black and simple, everything else is about the actual engineering of the product. The most lighting I'd ever invest in is maybe monitor backlighting for subtle desk light that isn't overpowering. But I'm also a cheapass when it comes to anything without real meaningful function.

>>
>>8146200
Keyboard? I mean it's a model M but yeah more info please
>>
>>8152807
Easier to read is valid, but I disagree with less likely to make careless mistakes. I correct all of my mistakes to gain muscle-memory for writing correctly in the first place, and the time spent doing this is enough of a punishment for screwing up. With a pen, I'd have wasted part of the page as well, degrading the quality of the entire page of notes. In fact, I'd argue that with a pen I'd avoid correcting more minor mistakes, which means more careless mistakes out of habit.

>>8152835
I use pencil exclusively and do not have this issue. Do you use notebooks and close them? Only smudging I ever have is from wiping my own hand on the page while writing the next line, and with a pen that happens before the ink has dried sufficiently.
