I fully agree. The biggest issue was by limiting who can get a loan people argued that the poor were being kept out of higher education. If we kept student loans in the private sector we wouldn't have the severity of debt crisis and some colleges degrees may start to have value again. I'm in favour of education. Critical thinking skills are important but they should be applied to yourself as well. More or less you don't even hear arguments anymore, only emotional loaded statements. I don't know if the internet is representative but even if a college education teaches you critical thinking skills many seem unable to handle criticism and the last word is "don't talk to me ever again" or shit like that.

Work ethic isn't a blessing, it is a choice. I chose college but refused to take loans and was not good enough for scholarships. Two full time jobs in the summer with a handful of parttime gigs. In the winter during school I still held a full 40hour a week job and the occasional one-off gig. Graduated college debt-free, money in the bank. I always sought trade or management jobs where I could to ensure I could make well above minimum wage.

The problem is your prospects in life are extremely shitty if you don't go to college, even with the degree but without it employers basically see it as an excuse to treat you however the hell they want since you really can't do anything about it. If you live in more expensive areas of the US, as I do, your ability and opportunity to self educate is highly limited by the fact that you'll probably be working more than full time hours at two different jobs just to pay bills, thus forcing you to go to college if you want education

The craziest part is that greater access to education hasn't influenced social mobility, anyway. In fact, social mobility is worse than it ever has been. Greater access to a degree has simply led to a dilution of the value of a diploma, steeper market demand for advanced degrees to account for the excessive supply of undergraduate degrees, and even more economic inequality than we've ever seen. Unfettered access to degrees has only made things worse.
There used to be this notion that universities were for education and vocational programs were for job training. Somewhere along the line, vocational programs became looked down upon, so universities had to start fulfilling the roles of both institutions. One can only hope that, over time, vocational programs come back in vogue and save the future generations from the academia cancer.
