Police say a 13-year-old boy was home alone in Charleston County, South Carolina, when he went to grab his mother’s gun after he heard two alleged burglars try to break in from the back.

The boy, who police say feared for his life, fired through the door at 28-year-old Ira J. Bennett of North Charleston and 31-year-old Lamar Brown of Summerville. One of them fired back and both escaped inside a car. The boy then fired several more times as the two men drove away.
Neighbors said that around the same time they heard gunshots, they also saw a gray car speed away from the house. Police responded to the scene and recovered a Colt .45 pistol from the area where the suspects allegedly tried to break in, WHNS-TV reported.
Bennett was later arrested and Brown was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital not long after.
Police said that Bennett initially reported that someone had shot at the car while the two men were on the interstate.
Bennett was charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
The mother of the 13-year-old said she’s never witnessed any crime in her neighborhood since living there. The family left their home for the night because they didn’t feel safe.

A fourth-grader from Hillsborough, Florida, was warned not to pass any more love notes to his female classmates—and will be charged with sexual harassment if he persists.
That’s right: It’s not merely inappropriate for a nine-year-old boy to write such sexually-charged messages as “her eyes sparkled like diamonds,” but actually a criminal offense, according to the principal of an unnamed school.

This mom says her son passed a very sweet note to his crush.
"How she wears the same uniform and how her eyes sparkled like diamonds," his mother said.
But soon, she says other students started teasing her son about wanting to see the little girl naked.
"That's when the principal proceeded to tell me that it wasn't appropriate that he was writing the note and that if he writes another note, they are going to file sexual harassment charges on my 9-year-old," the mom said.
Hillsborough school district said the boy wrote more than one note and that the notes were unwanted, so that borders on harassment.
Students shouldn’t be passing amorous notes during class; they are a distraction. And it’s perfectly appropriate to tell the boy not to bother his female classmates—particularly if the messages are unwelcome. Little boys should learn to respect girls’ boundaries (and vice versa).
But at no point was it necessary to threaten the boy with sexual harassment charges. And yet schools seem possessed by a pernicious drive to involve the police in trivial disciplinary that are better left to teachers, parents, or administrators themselves.
Mild-mannered love notes sent by nine-year-olds do not constitute sexual harassment, and the principal who thought otherwise needs his safety-paranoia meter recalibrated.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I was under the impression US intervention in Syria was justified solely based on crimes against humanity conducted by the Assad regime. Surely the US knows it's CIA backed factions alone have no chance to overthrow Russian/FSA/Iranian forces, but they are headstrong and don't seem to be willing for any compromise in the region. The general tone when speaking about Syria is Assad will be finished, one way or the other. I understand meeting Russian aggression in Syria but there are other ways to go about this (the formation of an alliance to destroy ISIL) that could possibly lead to better relations, but this wouldn't lead to a regime change so it's ignored. None of the nations involved are really there to actively combat ISIL. Why is the US so set on overthrowing Assad? Why has Syria become the crucial foothold in the Middle East?
