For some reason I like this snapshit I took. I know there's no subject but I like it. Am I over-attached to it or is it actually decent?

Seriously. I was happily masturbating to the photos in this thread until I got to this one. It's just really hard to masturbate to this photo because of the horse teeth smile. It would've been a lot easier to masturbate to this picture of a woman in pajama pants with a dog if it weren't for the horse teeth smile.

At this point, after all the fucking around it took to bring you this damn photo I'm going to post it even if it didn't turn out any good.
At least now I've figured out how to work my new camera, my test roll came out fine aside from all the mistakes I made, I got some practice developing 120 again so hopefully spooling it onto the developing reel won't be such a shitshow next time, I got DSLR scanning sorted out, and I have a cool little adapter thing coming in the mail which should let me securely mount my digital camera onto my enlarger so I can get more consistent scans.

I agree with the other anon that this is the only one that works. I think I get what the photos are trying to show, but this is the one with the strongest mood. The others have technical flaws or weird framing or off-kilter perspective on the buildings which throws them off.
In this photo, I kind of want to see what it would look like if you had stepped back to include the poles that those power lines in the corner are connected to. They could frame the house and the trees.

>so I didn't really focus on either
Your excuse about her teeth is just that: an excuse.
>>2864955
Go easy on the VSCO, bro.
>>2867305
There are two major problems here. First, you're making an excuse for your lack of skill by claiming you need more gear. It doesn't work that way. You know why you missed the focus? Because you fucking don't know how to operate your camera and/or lens. Second, this is a shot of nothing. You know why you care about it? Because that girl is probably your daughter or niece or something like that. But without knowing her personally, there's nothing in this shot that would make anybody else care. It's an out of focus picture of a random girl, mostly hidden by a chair, doing nothing.
>>2867327
Grumpy cat.
>>2867351
Actually a pretty cool shot. I dig the little highlights of the poles, fence, and shit in the alley.
>>2867532
That's a cool shape/subject. The photo itself is meh, though. I feel like this was a wasted opportunity.
>>2867576

pls read the sticky and learn 2 focus
>>2867610
>Disappointed the corners are cut off and I didn't notice til it was too late but otherwise I really like this one. Tell me why I'm wrong
>but otherwise
The only thing that this photo is is the potentially cool framing, but you fucked that up. "But otherwise?" What the fuck else is there in this shot? It's fucking water. There's no subject beyond the window/framing. You like this shot personally because it had potential, but all we see is a fucking missed shot. Nothing else.
>i like this shot even though i fucked up the sole defining element of the shot
>>2867694
Pants-on-head level of retardedness in the pose. I guess the technical aspects are fine. The stylized color doesn't bother me. She's reasonably in focus. But that pose is just embarrassing. It's not quirky or whimsical. It's just bad silly.
>>2867728
The shot is really cluttered. There's just too much going on. What's the subject? The boat? The fence in the from? That shit on the left? The sky? Nothing draws my eye. Also, the colors are dull as fuck. I don't care if it was a cloudy, overcast day. That's not the issue. The colors and light are just sad and dull. Also, the picture is crooked. The whole thing is leaning to the right. Also, there doesn't appear to be any thought to the composition. Everything's just . . . there.
>>2867733
Okay. You're going for the geometry here. It's not a bad idea. The scene is reasonably unique. Again, though, the light and the colors feel dull as fuck. Also, the weird wide aspect ratio doesn't work. I'm sure you were trying to exclude extra shit at the top and bottom, but it looks like a photo which you attempted to salvage by cropping. Again, too, the scene is cluttered. It's just messy. Sometimes, the architecture might be cool, but because of all the extra shit in the frame it just may not be worth it.
>>2867738
I actually like the neon here. It's something interested to look at, especially as it plays off the floor and table. Once again, though, this is crooked at fuck, and the perspective is all wonky. Also, even though the neon lights are cool, the color for the rest of the shot is, again, dull. I feel like this has great potential to be a cool shot, but you'd have to walk around and trying out some different compositions and then give it some TLC in editing.
Keep going, bro. Just because these are shitty don't mean you won't learn. My advice to you is this: When something catches your eye, before you whip out that camera and start snapping, stop and think about *what* it was that caught your eye. Then think about *why* it caught your eye. Was it the color? Was it the shape? What is the subject? What made you stop and think "I need to shoot this." Then, once you can answer that question, think about *how* best to capture that with the tools you have.
[cont. from]
>>2868214
The key thing you need to learn at this point is that the viewer wasn't there when you were. The viewer didn't see what you saw. All the viewer sees is your finished product. Through the photography, you're trying to capture something. The only way we know what that was is by how you chose to capture that scene. There's not just one, single available shot for anything. There are limitless possibilities for how you shoot something. Maybe you open your aperture. Maybe you fuck with the shutter speed. Maybe you use a different lens. Maybe you take two steps to the left. Maybe you squat down. Maybe you walk around for half an hour trying to view the thing from different angles. What else is in the shot? How do those elements help or distract form what caught me eye? What else would a viewer see that I'm not taking into account?
You've got to think about fucking everything in front of you. The good. The bad. The cluttered. The boring. It all factors into the product, and if you're not taking that into account, you're not convey shit to us.
>>2868099
Just look at your original histogram. Your white point was low as fuck, which is why everything about this looks so murky. Also, this is an overwhelmingly dark photo, which is astonishing considering it was taken in sunlight with a white girl wearing a white coat.
And there's way too much fucking headroom.
>>2868174
If you're going to center that circle at the top, then center it. If you're going to put it to a side, then put it to a side. This almost-but-not-quite centering shit doesn't work.
>>2868217
t-thanks for feedback. I agree on white point, but I feel the bg should stay a little darker than your edit, something in between perhaps.
>>2864957
>Using any pre-XPro2 Fuji camera on 1/125 sec "death zone"
>accepting negative aspect distortion like a pleb
>not knowing the fatal multiples for 1st gen Fuji sensors
Are you even trying?
>>2868220
Well, consider this: The problem you get with the excessively dark background is that it muddles the composition and causes her to blend in with her surroundings. Look at her shirt. It's just black. Look at the background next to her shirt. More black. It's just the same. Look at her hair, especially on the left of the frame. It's falling off into shadows. It just blends in with the background.
If you want a dark background, that's fine, but for a girl dressed up in professional clothes doing a portrait shot like this, you probably don't want her blending in to everything. Keep the background dark if you want, but then you've got to make sure you're getting enough like on her, either at the time of the shot preferably) or in post.
I like trees and shit and dark backgrounds, but you don't want your subject to get lost.
Just something to consider.

They're not perfectly black and white, but they're a far cry from your neon clouds. And grass doesn't glow with blue hues. In this reality, grass has much more yellow and brown qualities. You really need to get your vertical lines vertical, this is a basic point that all the experts are pretty much in agreement on.
Using the distort tool in photoshop, I did a quick edit and resized 1000px long side per /p/ rules. I think it's a interesting shot, just keep in mind that you're going to get converging verticals whenever you tilt your camera up or down, unless, of course, you use a tilt shift lens. The workaround is to compose your shoot wide and then fix the verticals in post, keeping in mind that you will lose some of the image when you fix it.

I see this rookie mistake all the time with photographers who lack the confidence to tightly shoot their models, so they try different artsy fartsy gimmicks or they borrow ideas from cliche wedding photographers.
Technically it's a fine one point perspective architectural. As a portrait, it doesn't work for me. I'd much rather you had the window open and your model climbing out with a suitcase in her hand. At least that would tell a story.

I like everything going on in here. The thumbnail looks really old timey, which I though was cool. The dramatic sky and funky architecture are winners. I don't like the horizon dead center, I think you could crop the bottom to make it more panoramic and bring down the horizon, while keeping all that fantastic stormy cloud detail.

Don't over complicate your shots. I'd rather you had composed just one or two tree silhouettes on that sky and skipped the weird thing going on with branch in foreground.
Been too busy to shoot recently, so editing old snapshits

textbook example of poor composition. If you had just moved the camera a little bit to the right, then you could have framed the statue with the yellow tree in the background. Or, if you had knelt down and aimed upward, you could have wrapped the statue with blue sky and filled the background with heavenly clouds.
The 1.8 aperture is going to blur the shit out of your background, so keep that in mind and look for fun ways to play with that blurry background

Great job. Messed around with this in Photoshop and it looked really good rotated 90 degrees clockwise, slightly cropped on left, and with a dark vignette added. Very cool shot, anon.

what's going on with the brightness?
Skin tone is the same plastic lifeless color as the outfit. It looks like you intentionally wanted to make your model look like a plastic mannequin from the desaturated skin and retarded pose. I encourage you to move your tint to less green, more magenta.
Cropping out the lower half will at least keep you from being laughed at when your model sees it. If you photoshop her hand closer to her mouth, you can go for a Dr Evil theme, so there's that.

I got excited by the thumbnail, it looked really cool like a vintage post card with an ocean liner. What a disappointment when I saw full size.
>>2867733
this is called a one-point perspective and it's incredibly difficult to get right because if you don't nail the verticals AND the horizontals absolutely perfect, then the entire image feels disconcerting.
Looking at the lines on the floor and on the ceiling, I can see right away that the camera was too far to the right. You needed to take a large step to the left to center the image.
The other issue with the composition is that you're too wide. You could have framed your shot much better by cropping at the middle of the outer columns so you don't have that distracting tree on the left or the white walls on right. The eye should go to the subect, which is that odd phallic structure in the background.
If you were going to make a portfolio shot at this location, you'd want to arrange all of the tables and chairs, as well as photoshop out the distractions like the little white signs on the wall in background.
>>2867738
cool thumbnail but disappointing full size. The other anon gave you some excellent suggestions. I'll just add that the neon colored light reflects off all those interior surfaces, consequently making the walls and furniture look flat and giving an ugly color. Try photographing neon reflections off water for much better results, especially after it rains. Wet asphalt looks beautiful with light reflections.

suggestions:
Rotate into landscape for better composition.
Get back as far as possible so you can use the longest focal length you can for the best perspective.
Reduce ISO to 100 for more sharpness.
Reduce aperture to f/8 - f/11 for more DOF
Use shutter speed to control lighting.
FFS remove the bench and garden hose. You could do it in photoshop but it's much quicker and easier to just do it in real life.
>>2867955
shoot this at midday? That's the worst time of day to photograph in sunlight. Early morning or late evening would have made much more interesting lighting and shadows.
>>2867956
the sunlight coming in from the left makes all sorts of highlights and shadows in the stonework and the lattice to the right. That's what you want to be capturing instead of dead grass and peeling paint decay.
>>2867958
here you didn't shoot one point perspective and look at how your image comes to life with the light and shadows that give it depth. Great thumbnail. You nailed the tree to show the scale of the house. The foreground is really nice and having the horizon makes this so much better than your others. I would photoshop out the telephone lines to really drive home the abandoned-little-house-on-the-prairie sentiment. Good job anon
>>2867964
the mountains are great but the composition is retarded. Landscapes need a foreground, middle ground, background, and horizon.
If you're going to have power lines, incorporate them as leading lines.
Too much sky, google rule of thirds composition.

>f/14
>ISO 2500
>AUTO exposure
When you shoot indoors, especially with sunny windows, your camera is going to do all sorts of funky stuff trying to figure out how to cope with the overwhelming dynamic range.
Dont shoot auto, do shoot manual or aperture priority mode.
Reduce ISO from 2500 to 400 to reduce noise and grain.
Open up your aperture from f/14 to f/7.1 to let in more light and still maintain the detail of the trees and houses in the exterior windows.
Use your shutter speed to control the amount of lighting.
One trick for getting better windows: expose your shot for the outside view and take the pic (the inside will be too dark but don't worry, you just want the exterior of the window). Next, expose for the inside and take a second shot (the windows will be blown out). Finally, Photoshop the decent window exposure into your decent room exposure with blown out windows and you'll have a much better shot.
Another trick: if you have a flash, fire it at the window pane when you take your exposure for outside view (but don't fire it for your indoor exposure). In photoshop, put each exposure as a separate layer. First, change your flash exterior layer's mode from Normal to Darken. Next add an inverted layer mask to your interior exposure layer. Finally, use the brush tool to paint in the windows on your layer mask. Very simple and easy to do. For more info, here's related tutorial:

much better but you're leaving lots of room above her head. Don't be shy about lowering your camera and cropping much closer to top of her head and showing her waist - you'll get better results imho. In the USA, pier, dock, wharf are all synonyms. I'm in Florida, where we probably have more boats than any other state in the Union. I work in real estate and I can confirm that the overwhelming vast majority of industry experts would call that a dock, not a pier. And if there were a structure on it, such as a gazebo or boat house, it would be called a dock house.

The basic rule of landscapes says they need four things: foreground, middle, background, and a horizon.
Your editing is way overboard, especially the sharpness and the coloring. Make much smaller adjustments and then take a break, go get a cold drink. Better yet, sleep on it. When you return to the image, you'll have a totally different frame of mind and you'll make much better decisions about your pp.
One more thing: the dead grass and telephone poles in the first image are very eye-distracting. Remove or crop.

You don't really know what you are talking about, do you? If I had gotten as far back as possible, I would have a photo with a majority of sky and ground, with the most interesting part, the building, as just a small slice running through the center. It would be horrible. Also, the place was gated, so I couldn't remove the bench and garden hose even if I wanted to. Which I didn't want to.
Oh, btw, ISO, aperture and shutter speed all work together to control lighting. Just FYI.

By the way, this was my second time going out with my camera, since I didn't like the kit lens that came with this thing and thus ended up waiting until this new lens came. I thought I did pretty good to be honest.

I like this one the best, the mushrooms form an interesting shape in the right two-thirds of the frame, and I like the two-tone cream and light brown colour scheme.
The rest are fairly boring, in terms of composition for instance this >>2868831 is simply the subject dead in the centre. That composition would be fine if the subjects were really interesting, but they're fairly ordinary plants.

Polishing a Turd: The Post
There is no potential in that shot. The composition is shitty. The light is fucking awful. Anon doesn't need to fuck with this in editing. He needs to not shoot landscapes with harsh shadows and highlights in the middle of the fucking day.
>>2868906
Great job, looks good on my 40" 4K tv used as monitor, but you should resize 1k px for the mobile device plebs.
only critique is the monochromatic color palette, which swallows up your tiny dangling friend.

>I still have so much to learn about Pentax settings.
No, you need to learn:
(1) How to read the sticky.
(2) The basics of exposure.
(3) The basics of light.
(4) What a subject is.
There's nothing unique about "Pentax settings" that would've fixed this. The problem is the decision to take this shot in the first place.

I like this a lot. Good light, especially around rear wheel. Nice focus and the chrome looks amazing on the headlight. Is this film? Did you use a filter or vcso or something to get this look?
>>2869000
Thanks. It's Digital. I messed up when exporting the metadata sorry about that. No filter or VSCO, just altered the tone curves in LR.
>>2869004
>just altered the tone curves in LR.
Man, you went overboard with the faded look. I'm not saying you've got to have ultra pure black and white points, but this is starting to look like it was photographed through wax paper.
>>2869013
mhm, thanks for the critique. i'll go back and see what i can do
>>2869013
I disagree - the setting lends itself quite well to this look, imho. I think it's totally appropriate and fits the vintage look of the moped.
>>2868923
crop it tighter on all sides. its a stationary object. its reasonable to assume you could composed it tight. i like the look tho
>>2869028
>the setting lends itself quite well to this look, imho
It's a random street in New York. It has modern cars. Just because there is an older looking item in the shot doesn't make it a vintage setting.
And "vintage" doesn't equal faded. Some vintage films had a more subdued look, but that dealt more with colors than with lack of contrast and lack of color and exposure range.
This is a cheap, cheesy way to achieve a faux-vintage look that may play well on something like Pinterest, but it's just gimmicky.
>>2868923
I think you can achieve that faded, old school look you want but with a little more contrast and dynamic range. Looking at your histogram for this shot, the black is just insanely high.
Remember that much of what people mistake for "faded" in vintage films has more to do with how a particular film rendered colors, or handled highlights, or handled contrast. Taking away blacks will certainly achieve some of that, but it will also give the shot an overall dull feel.
pic related is a rough, quick edit, to give you some ideas. Just a few rough contrast and color adjustments. It still looks oldy, but it doesn't look as muddled and washed out. Just some things to consider.
>>2868923

I was praising his aperture choice because of the crispness. My question was about the lighting and if the back light improves the picture aesthetically. I think it does
There's this griffon on this memorial that has been unattended for a really long time now and He looks like he's distressed at how this tree is sprouting right in his face.

you can open your aperture to max to get the most shallow dof you can.
adding a vignette would also help because eye is drawn to the brightness in the windows on either side.
see how that light on the griffin's wing casts little shadows and highlights in the feathers? that's good, that's what you want.

Honestly, I don't even know where to begin with this picture.
It's certainly a photograph. And, by your explanation, you apparently put thought and time into it.
So, I guess you've got effort going for you. But as far as the actual, photographic result . . . I just.
