that photo and lots of other photos you used that flash on make her look featureless. shes pasty and pale, and, since there is no serious makeup involved to counter flash power, her face looks flat. also too much of flash creates hard shadows.

your ricoh is showing its limitations for this type of photoshoot. no matter how well composed and posed is a model shot, if it misses the face/eyes, then into the trash it goes.

yeah i was noticing the harsh shadows that flash was sticking onto her, i just rolled with it since its all i had to work with, ill keep that in mind next time and invest $7 into a soft cover or something.
I thought it was interesting how pale she was, wearing black in a forest, i was out to try something different and i definitly experienced how difficult it is to edit and manage all of those different colors.
And i might be blind but which ones did i miss focus on? i know some of those were taken at smaller apertures (to make room for that giant fucking flash) and maybe i cant see if i missed or not, only one i can see being missed is >>2843986

now pic related is what i meant with the color thing. first thing i noticed was the radioactive greens, pls never again. you have beautiful fall light but cold nuclear disaster tones, its a mismatch.
then i realised the featureless face wasnt much of a flash problem but a pp problem, you killed all the reds. i brought them back and her facial features and shapes became distinct (pale people need reds on their skin). she looks even sensual now, even alive, for once.

and maybe i got type 3 downs syndrome or something, but i still cant see the focus im missing. Maybe its the way im scaling down (i gaussian blur 0.3, while resampling in "bilinear" as to not razor edge the shit out of the photo when it scales down) and maybe it looks less sharp? in full res her face is nice and in focus

Hey GR Model guy, glad you reported back. Looking much better! Processing is good though I'd dial back the red in the edits you made, just maybe a small local adjustment to the skintones. It's been a while since I've calibrated my monitor though so take that with a grain of salt.
As for focus, everything looks fine which you'd expect from a big downscale, need 100% to be sure. As for the sharp light, I've tried a basic diffuser, one of those 4 foot circle thingies (flash set to wideangle with built in diffuser from a few feet away, subject about 3 feet from diffuser) and it didn't help that much. Might be different with your lightstick thingy.

im thinking an umbrella. For flash im using the flash that came with my GR, fucking thing is bigger than the camera itself. For trigger/receiver, im using a cheap Neewer set, 2.4ghz, really good so far. the light is my Saberstrip light cover, and lastly the tripod is the cheapest manfrotto i could find

Since it is basically a part of my body now, the GR is def coming with on every shoot we do, i plan to use that for my wide shots.

Don't have any lens recommendations since it looks like you have your bases covered. I mean there's always gimmicky lenses but if I were gonna buy stuff it'd be that diffuser, gels, and maybe another strobe and battery pack for more flashes and faster recycle which might be needed to compensate for the slower sync speeds in the dSLR

OP for being new to portraiture work, you're doing a hell of a job! Keep working at it, and you'll become even better. It also helps to keep working with the same model, or somebody you're VERY comfortable with to help progress quicker. At least that's what I've learned.

OP here, yeah i asked for help with shooting models for the first time, and she volunteered to be my model for a couple of shoot. Since i cant pay her, we agreed that she can use my pictures of her whenever and however she likes, and to try to get her modelling thing to lift off the ground

yea, preferably in-between angles, not straight front or straight side lighting
also, make sure you got a light source, a reflector, or natural light coming from slightly above, in order to make her eyes pop in pic (and smooth out nose line etc); that's a good trick especially for close portraits, and you can play around with it (eg. harsh lighting dividing her face)
