just basic calculations.
Engagement rate is the average amount of likes you get per photo divided by how many followers you have. A ton of instagram stat website will give you the average likes per photo over a certain time frame. For this I did a rolling year, so May 2015-2016.
An engagement rate can tell you a few things: if you hashtag heavily, you'll get a lot of driveby likes and a higher engagement rate. However, you may not get so many followers. If you don't really hashtag, a high engagement rate can tell you that people really like your photos. A low engagement rate is a sign that you might be a lousy photographer, but you also might post too frequently or at bad hours (ain't no one gonna like that shit when you post at 3 am semmpaiii).
Comment rate is important because it shows how much you're actually engaging your audience. A high engagement rate coupled with a high hastag count, yet low comment rate is a good indication that you're just skimming the #instagood pool. A high engagement rate with a high comment rate is a good sign. A medium or even low engagement rate with a high comment rate is a sign that you aren't doing a good job of getting your work out there and can probably stand to hashtag once in a while.
a high followers to following ratio can mean that your work is really good, but it can also mean that you're just a hack who follows people and then immediately unfollows as soon as they follow you. the f2f ratio is one of my least favorite things about instagram, because it's front and center up top, which makes it a status/prestige thing, which then promotes selfish, ugly behavior.

I never follow people back because I like to keep my feed clean and not impossible to go through, then they unfollow me after a day or two. It's pretty hilarious behavior.
