#44- "5am" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>770520

Welp, it's early as fug. Bait shop near me supposedly opens at 5am so I'm going to grab some shiners and see if I can actually get some attention from peacock bass. Miami anon is supposed to meet up, said she is down to be at the lake by 6:30am so we'll see.

Strippers are still goin strong in the Northeast, mainebub has(d) the honey hole. TXfag has the worm hooks for the low.

Talk about fishin.
>>

What time do you go to bed?

I still haven't gone to sleep yet and I'm in the same time zone as you haha what am I like??

Also you need to lay the pipe on Miamianon
>>
Hey thanks for the help about the open faced reel. I have the anti reverse switch flipped but I think the problem is I have shitty line coupled with the fact that I'm new to using these types of reels. I need to respool it anyways because I didnt put enough line on it the first go around.
>>
>>772008
I think I passed out around 9pm last night. Woke up for a minute around midnight and went back to sleep.
>>
>>772017
Damn I need to get on your sleep schedule so I can hit the reservoir real early and have some topwater fun

Gonna fish any lures while your shiners are kickin about out there?
>>
>>772026
Depends where I am. First lake we're going to is one of those quarry lakes with a deep drop off but clear water. I'll probably run some Zoom lizards through there.

What do you guys pay for shiners? I paid $9.50/doz for mediums which seemed a little pricey but it has been a decade since I bought any so I can't remember what I paid then.

And mostly I feel bad for Miami anons because I wanted them to hit some 2lb largemouth at least.

I wouldn't give a shit if it were just me fishing.

Tryin a lake across the street now. Didn't wake up at 5am on a Saturday to get nothing.

>>

I'm not sure that shiner was even very alive anymore. They love easy meals. I get them to hit topwater fogs and stuff sometimes but it is hard to hook them.

That gar was a fatty too. The couple I have caught were around the same length, but skinny enough where I could hold em with one hand. Not this guy today.

Should have said natural bait
See if you can't catch a sunfish and run one of those The gar should like it

The little mayans are just chasing lures around. This water is like crystal clear and I think that has a lot to do with it. I was running one of those Rapala Shad Raps (gold) or whatever one ones with the curved lips are called and they were nibbling and chasing it a bunch but not hitting hard enough.
>>
>>772164
I read somewhere it can help in clear water to really rip the lures through the water. Helps with reaction strikes iirc

if i need it to pass through the eyelets, il use some form of an albright, if i dont ( using a short leader) il just tie a surgeons loop and tie the leader to that, ive had relative success with various forms of aolbright, and im sure it would mae it even easier to pass through eyelets if i coated the entire thing in superglue to help smooth it out

Got my biggest bass yet (still only 3/4 pound lol) at a lake yesterday. It hit a live mosquitofish on a little size 12 hook and a split shot on 4lb mono while I was trying to catch bluegill/sunfish. Any recommendations on a 7 or 8 weight fly rod with a fighting butt? I looked into the okuma slv fly rod and heard that it wasn't fast at all
I want to catch pike/Muskie, steelhead, bass, carp, and maybe some saltwater fish on it
Blues, flounder, Spanish mackerel, maybe some drum, and if I was out in a kayak and saw a big dark shadow of a Ray you bet your ass I'd try to see if there is a cobia under it
I wouldn't be surprised If I got spooled but I'd go for it God damn it
Are the uglystick fly rods as soft as the other uglystiks and too soft to really cast well or easily?

>>

trout magnets are 1/64oz, cant cast them f far but theyre great for getting little fishes i need to go buy some more, and even try their mini ones that are 1/200th of an ounce
>>
>>772271
Aye.
Well i at least hope that the fish have picked up a bit of slack since i last went...
The weather still isnt may-weather.
>>
>>772290
I've got 1/16oz underspins as well as tiny jigheads and those mini mites. Just sayin I tried something similar. Even if they don't hit small Mepps, they will normally go for something like that.

Idk, I think those deep lakes with clear or brown tinted water are just a bitch to fish on hot sunny days. I wanted to get one of those 8" peacocks so bad though.
>>
I have 0 success with crankbait.

It's such a retard proof concept
>launch the lure as far as humanly possible
>reel at a decent speed to maintain depth
>rinse and repeat

but I never get a bite at depth, literally NEVER, at best I have a fish chase it to the shore before attempting a hit
>>
>>772316
forgot to add what is the time and place for a diving crankbait?
I just assumed it was like a topwater lure where you could never go wrong
>>
>>772316
Crank baits are actually not that simple
Twitching the rod tip, pausing, changing retrieve rate, and so many more techniques
>>
>>772328
I feel like if they follow but dont bite, they arent sold on the presentation, or they dont want to bite.

With most jerkbaits with strong side-side action, a little twitch every so often isnt bad.
Lures like the rapala original floater dont gain from twitches, but some others, like x-rap have that mad side-side action on twitching.
Maybe try that sometimes, mix it up and dont straight retrieve all the time.
>>
>>772328
Top water has a time and place
Calm water early morning or evening or overcast days
>>
to the anon posting last thread about replacing trebel on a mepps,
cutting the old hook and adding a new one with a split ring may work, its a good first step, if it works leave it as it is, But if you find it getting hooked on itself more often remoe the hook and split ring, and youre going to have to dissasemble the wire on the lure itself, then put it bak toghether, i just did it since i had rto replace a hook myself, and decided to add a offset hook so i can run soft plastics on it

>topwater
>can never go wrong
Like skid said, topwaters have a more restrictive time window than crankbaits.

Cranks for bass always work well for me in the afternoon and stuff when the bass are coming up from the deeper water to lurk around drop offs and weed beds waiting for bait fish. I use cranks in the same conditions as spinners normally, the water clarity is normally the deciding factor between the two.

>>772335
>getting hooked on itself
Really? I have never had that issue with a Mepps or any other inline. Main problem I have with them is the line or swivel getting tangled around the blade. I found an easy way to prevent that though. Right as the lure is about to hit the water on a cast, I grab the line and stop it just short of where it would land.
>>
>>772349
ive had spinners hooks get caught on the line , or sometimes a snap swivel, on really hard casts or in windy conditions, adding a split ring between the hook and lure itself would make it more free swinging an d in my mind making it more proe to tangiling on itself
>>
Anybody fish in the panhandle of Texas? Its very unfortunate that I live here
>>
>>772353
Most of my jigs frustrate me for this.
Not during the cast, because theyre heavy, But when i jig them in the sea, and on the flutter, they spin and twitch and whatnot, and 80% of retrieves end up with a treble tangling the line, which kills the rest of the retrieve....
>>
>>772360
what type of jigs do you use? ive had issues with some shit

i really need to talk to the old dudes i fish with to try to get out on a boat, maybe get some giant strippers,

see if the one with the missing paddle tail stil moves in the water like an eel or some shit, it may work with a strong twitch retrieve compared to the normal steadyish retrieve

I got medium strength bites on this, now swallow and then double over rod bites, but good taps on end of rod. Every time i reeled in the hook, nothing. The hook is a 7/0 circle sea hook. Is my hook too big for the bait? Could it of been the hook was too big for the fish? Can the average 1lb fish (trout, flounder, catfish, bass, sheepshead, redfish). Even take a 7/0 circle hook?

I get that with largemouth and the finesse worms sometimes. They don't start fighting until you reel them in for a couple seconds. I'm not sure what it is, maybe because the worm is still in their mouth while the hook pulls forward, theh think they still got their meal.

And this fucking Mayan this afternoon. Got hooked by that treble with his mouth closed where two came through the top and one on the bottom. Those can be a bitch to get out.

Don't worry fellas I'm on the water 3-4 times a week and haven't been skunked yet. I'll try to leave some for you guys down south.

What I'm really waiting on is the smalles to get active in the shallows, most are in deeper water out here so they can be hard to finesse out of their hidey holes.

Also gotta get out to my lake and gear up on some big bullheads. Seen them biting in the southern part of the province but not in the north yet, still pretty chilly.
>>
>>772749
How big do your bullheads get? I used to get a lot of them in one little pond by my house in IL but the biggest were probably 12".
>>
>>772751

I've pulled them out at over 14" inches and I've seen them at night way fatter and longer, but my lakes are basically untouched so it doesn't surprise me.
>>
>>772629
BecAuse there's more 1lb fish then 10lb fish
>>
When fishing by yourself, how many lines do you usually cast out?
>>
>>772756
The pond I got a lot of them in was small too, so I'm sure that makes a difference. 14" bullheads sound fun. You catch them on nightcrawlers?

>>772768
One because I mostly use lures. If I somehow have live bait, I will cast one out with that and fish a lure on another but I always end up bringing it in when I want to walk further down the shoreline.

If no lures at all and just live bait, normally just 2 rods because if you get a fish with 3+ lines out and it decides to run around, you will have a fucking mess.

Also make sure you check your local laws. I always heard 2 lines per person when I was in IL, but I remember reading something on the FL website that said there is no limit as long as you are licensed.
>>
>>772768
2

One rod ill do something like a dropshot rig or a slip sinker and cast it out. See if i can get a catfish or a carp

At the same time ill use a different rod with spinners, jigs, cranks or etc.

If im not doing two lines like that, ill just have 2 different lures so i dont have to swap em out and retie them so often

No limit for freshwater. The saltwater rules are long and complicated though so I have no idea. Probably different rules for species and areas. I found it interesting that on the Atlantic coast, you must use circle hooks while fishing for reef fish but only above the 28deg North line.

I did much better with poppers in the winter when the water was <70F.

Poppers are great under specific conditions. Has to be early morning or late afternoon when you can see the bass jumping. Normally fairly calm water. Toss it out there, let it sit for 10sec. Pop it 3-4 times, let it sit for 3sec, pop 3-4 times, repeat. They will hit it, let them drag it underwater and then set the hook.

yo, so I start seeing sand crab beds today at the beach. I should try use these fuckers in the surf in california. I know that people usually use carolina rig for them. Around what sinker size should I use for them. Should I cast and put in some action in retrieve, or twitch them, or just hold on and let the wave wash them back and forth.

Pretty much anything in the surf will bite on sandcrab right? Think I can score even halibut on them?

>>
>>773036
Reel it in and give it some twitches every once in awhile. You might wanna try stopping for like half a second during the retrieve too.
>>
>>773036
You crank it. You should feel the resistance of the spoon spinning, that's when you know you're doing it right. If you dont feel it, your spoon is probably wobbling, give it a flick after you cast to start the spoon spinning then
>>
What are the ideal hooks and size to use for live minnows? I haven't had shit for luck at any of the local lakes with lures, probably too much fishin pressure, so I'd like to give live bait a try. I thought I read that circle hooks are best, but couldn't find any at Walmart. The only things they had that seemed similar were baitholder hooks and octopus hooks. Or are those the same thing?

And also do you typically use weights when using minnows?
>>
>>773156
Aberdeen or circle hook and hook the tail or the mouth. You can put minnows on a jiggead too by rigging above the spine.

Lures work though anon

Fishing is all equipment and technique

If you arent catching fish one of those 2 is off.

Ask the local guys what works well and do your research on what to use each season and for different water clarities

>>773156
Octopus are what I would use, since you don't thread the entire hook into the live bait, you want a hook like an octopus or circle hook with a short shank that will not detract from the natural presentation. I don't use minnows a lot but fishing them under a float with no weight or a small split shot is a good tactic. Another is to tie a drop shot rig, but with the hook on a couple inches of leader instead of right on the mainline. Use between 1/2 and 1 oz weight, cast, and tighten up (this method would be if you want to feel bites rather than see them). I assume you are going for bass?
>>
>>773168
I realize my technique with lures isn't great, but the biggest issue is finding decent spots. One of my buddies is an experienced fisherman and from what he said most of the good spots in local lakes are only accessible by boat. I've tried all sorts of lures from the shore and haven't even gotten hits. Can't imagine I could fuck up using an inline spinner or crank that badly. I do need to work on my retrieves with Texas rigged plastics though.

>>773171
Thanks for the advice, and yes I'm mostly going for bass, but I'd be happy with anything really. There are bass, crappie, channel cat, trout, and maybe walleye, and I imagine live minnows would work to catch most of those. I'll probably just keep it simple with a slip float and splitshot.

It might be your lures are bad colors for where you're fishing them. Why use a shad colored lure where the fish only eat craws? Or why use a light colored lure when the water is muddy? It isnt that you wont get hits if you use an unoptimal color but figuring out what the right color to use is can really help.

>>773156
I bought those medium shiners yesterday, got to the lake, and realized I didn't have any proper hooks for them. All my aberdeen hooks are panfish sized and no circle hooks since I never use live bait. Ended up using EWG worm hooks. Got the job done.

>>773100
People on this board are too fast to report stuff. It's annoying sometimes. You need a little room to go off-topic.

>>773036
TXfag got it right. Just make sure you feel the blade spinning, especially with Rooster Tails. Mepps always spin unless the line is tangled in the blade, but sometimes you need to give the rod tip a good rip to get Rooster Tails spinning.
>>
>>773207

Nothing like a sliver spinner in murky water. Or even bright silver rattling crank. I think when you get to a certain point of murky, the feesh are going to be striking at vibrations instead of colors.

With fairly murky water, if I'm doing soft plastics, something like Zoom's junebug color is bretty sweet.

Use your pair of needlenose to grab the bottom loop ( on the side of the tag end ) and pull down gently being careful to not fuck everything up too much
the tsag end will eventually pop out ad look like >>772342

remove the old hook, Add the new hook, and use the pliers to attempt to close the loop at the bottom making it somewhat neat, then grab by the top of the tag end and feed it back through the bead (basically undo the steps you took to take it appart)
if you can bend the tag end back over the bead like it was originally but depending on how well you made the hook loop at the bottom you may not be able to

Alright, im going to try to get out to a few ponds ( old gravel pits) and try for some bass, i want to hear all of your oppinions on How to catch the fishes
Ponds one is big and deep, Not sure how deep, Water clairity is usually shit
Pond 2 is long but thin and somewhat deep as well, Much better water quality, , More weeds too
Pond 3 is inbetween sizes but weedy as fuck not sure how deep
>>
>>773269
"up there"
where are you friend?
>>
>>773282
I can't stand those deep ponds. Idk if it is the same as here, but we have millions of lakes around here where they dig them out to build up everything else. They normally have really clear water, and a shallow shelf until like 10' out, then drop off into nothing.

The only way I have luck with bass is when the water is cooler and they are just off the drop off. Otherwise I run a Mepps or smaller Rapala along the drop offs and hit Mayans.

I like the shape of Pond 3. If you can find some weed beds, shade from trees, or big branches in the water that provide cover and structure, that's where I would be.

But fishing is like gambling, you never know.
>>
>>773288
theres little cover since its all gravel ponds, Pond one has little to no weeds, Pond 2 has some patchy shit and pond 3 ( last year) was totally weeded up to the surface by mid summer Though there are supposedly big bass in pond one, and ive seen a 5 plus pound in pond 3

What should I fish in clear water that isn't still?

Hey guys.

New to salt water fishing and I have a few questions.

I'll be fishing from shore in the Caribbean (lesser Antilles) and I'm using 60lb braid with 20lb mono as a leader.

What are some common good eating fish I should target? How should I target them? Would frozen shrimp (it'll thaw obviously) be adequate as bait?

my most pressing question pertains to knots. What's a good knot to tie my 60lb braid to my 20lb mono? I've got the Bimini twist down good but don't know where to go from there. Answeres don't necessarily have to use a Bimini.

Thanks!

Went fishin this afternoon and caught a small largemouth on a little mepps black fury spinner. Also had a couple hits that didn't set, everything felt small though. Oddly, other people were catching fish around the same time, then for the next couple hours nobody caught anything.

Also a bro dude noticed a snapping turtle hanging out in shallow water that wasn't moving, so he pulled it out and the poor guy had a hook through his mouth. I helped get that sucker out with some pliers.
>>
>>773494
In real clear water, I try to go for realistic looking stuff. Those Storm or Tsunami shads have worked for me, as well as livelike crank baits. But it can still be tricky unless the fish are biting good. I have that problem lots of places.

I would've broken out the pliers and wire cutters before I threw him back with a hook still in there though.

Fucking wind has really picked up and now cumulonimbus clouds are moving in

Best time of the day to fish is about to be ruined by thunderstorms

Lake was still af too, perfect for rapala floating minnows

Yo Zuri has some nice baits, but nowhere near the selection of Rapala. So I would have to say Rapala.

I want the winter and cooler water to come so I can fish topwater more. That Yo Zuri popper has the most awesome action when you walk the dog with it. But bass aren't really hitting topwater with the heat.

Walked 3 plus miles today with 20 plus pound pack
Caught 2 fish
Both at the nearest pond to my house

went kayaking for the first time on a lake today. any other beginners here is some advice, I was stuck in the saddle and nowhere to get out of the boat and ending up peeing myself 2 hours into a 5 hour trip. I ended up separating from the group and found a fisherman who threw me a line and towed me back to the parking area dock.

Kek. That was like yesterday.

>wake up at 4:30am
>at bait shop by 5:15am
>drop $30+ on shiners and a bucket
>meet Miami anons at lake down south around 6:15am
>nothing at first lake
>second lake, finally one anon gets the gar and later a snapping turtle
>other anon and I just getting Mayans chasing lures but not biting
>Bass Pro, then try to search for a couple lakes near there
>fish at canal and have tons of interest from Mayans and young peacocks but no real bites
>after all day in the heat and sun, finally go home around 1:30pm

>go back to lake right down the street later in the afternoon
>Mayans within seconds and a couple small largemouths as well as a snek bite

But those lakes near my house are the ones I really know and know what baits to use. I'm about to make them come up to my area just so they can actually have some luck. That's what I did with my coworker and his kid, just told them to come to my little spot and they had no problem.

you look exactly like I envisioned
>>
>>773551
Yeah but you didn't walk 3 miles with heavy ass pack

Also
Took 3 casts with my memecaster today

All 3 casts birdsnested
Fuck that shit
There went all the braid I had
>>

7 years old?

Actually, I'm not even sure how old the kid is. He might be older. His dad is only 23 though so he must have had him really young.

>>773554
Why are you so shitty with the memecaster? I have been getting a lot better with mine. Also better at getting nests out.

And fuck walking that far with the Florida heat. I park right up by my spots most of the time. I have one spot where I have to walk like a mile and last time I was there it started pouring on me. Wasn't even worth trying to get back to the car fast since I was going to be drenched either way.
>>
>>773549
Why didn't you hop in the water, go to shore, or use a bottle? Sorry you had a bad time tho. Yaks are fun.
>>
>>773559
I was stuck. Literally couldnt stand up or move.

>>773556
what is a memecaster?
>>
>>773556
I'm really not that bad with them, the day I was at the shore I had probably 200 plus perfect casts
Then one fuckup after dark

Plus I managed to save that line too (most of it)
Today I don't k ow what happened, my guess is when I spooled it there was a loose loop or some shit and that caused the first backlash
Then the same thing happened two more times

Yeah, it can be risky after dark if you aren't 100% comfortable.

Pic related

today im just thinking is there was some flaw in how the line was wound onto the spool and then each time i rewound it there was a flawi n it

Also gotta make sure the braid doesn't dig into itself. Old nig who I always see at this one lake, he runs some huge 20lb mono and I asked him why he doesn't do braid and he said it's because of how it digs into itself after a big fish or a snag. I never really have a problem because I pay attention to it.

>>773560
You gotta get a memecaster so you can look down on plebs with spinning reels.

I want to start using my Silver Max more. I have barely used that setup since I bought it. I think it is 30lb braid and that would be great for the lakes with bad weeds and snags.
>>
>>773566
I have 2 of those silvermax combos, a mh and a h. I mostly use them for downfishing big shad for stripers. I also had good luck casting a big fat gamechanger fly with one.
>>
>>773566
thays what i think happened, the line got caught on itself slightu, then dug into itself
>>
Do you fish a bucktail jig by itself? Or do you put a grub on it?

That normally habbens after I get caught on a snag. But like I said, I try to pay attention and make the next cast nice and soft. I also have to keep myself from pulling the line out with the drag like I do on spinning reels.

I wonder why braid doesn't dig into itself on spinning reels like that.

Thanks for the suggestion but It's not necessary. I know there are a ton of fish close to shore here due to there being a lot of reefs in the area. My primary reason for being here is for research so I don't have a lot of time to make a big excursion out of this. Shore fishing is what I will be doing.

Can you help me with my knot problem? What's a good knot to attach a 60lb braid Bimini to a 20lb mono leader?

And will store bought frozen shrimp work well enough for bait? I'm also going to search the tide pools for crabs and small fish.
