About to go to a nearby lake to see if yhis coldfront made the bass hungry.

As always, talk about fishing.

You have 30# on the Abu, right? How do you like it? Were you able to get pretty much the whole 300yds on there?

I was thinkin that 30lb has to be real nice if you are running something bigger like 3/4oz+ (at least compared to running 20lb mono) but if you end up making that a heavy cat or saltwater combo, you could def go up to 40lb or 50lb.

I was realizing when I spooled that reel up with 20lb, I have so many 300yd spools of 30lb and 40lb for some reason. Plus a couple of 15lb and a bunch of 10lb. I'm pretty sure that 300yd spool of 20lb I used for your reel has never been touched, it looked totally full so there is still enough to do another rod.

I need to start marking these things. I like the clear SpiderWire spools because I can kinda see how much is left. But there's so many spools I can't tell if I have 50yds, 200yds, or 300yds still left on there. I want to grab another 20lb spool when I see it on sale though. I'm not sure whether my Cardinal SX is 20lb or 30lb either. So confusing.

The new BPS Carbonlite rods actually have a knob on the bottom that you twist when you change lines and it reminds you what weight is on them.
>>
>>718480
Its a squid jig. But i guess you know that by now.
I let it sink to a certain depth, close to bottom sometimes, and slow slow slow retrieve, with a small easy twitch every now and then.

Alternatively, same thing, but jig it upwards sharply 1-3 times and let drop, reel slow slow slow, jig, let drop....

There are heavier ones meant to be used like a vertical jig from a boat, by hand line.

Saved for the next thread. That second one is pretty.

You are in Estonia, right? What's the deal with this big lake? Reminds me of Okeechobee in FL. I really want to take a weekend trip there and rent a boat. I guess is is real shallow and avg depth is like 8' so the whole place should be easy to get big largemouth.

It's going to be a swimbait/heavy jig set up, and I'm going to also use it for pike and Muskie, maybe light catfishing. Definately light saltwater but I'm comfortable with 30 pound test. Usually I'll have a 15-20 pound test leader on it so the main line isn't my weak point.
>>
>>718481
Yeah. They are fished from late late august at the very earliest, and all the way to late january at the latest.
Mostly during october-november-december.
They arent tons of fun, but they do put up some resistance. They tend to get unhooked at the very end when you are supposed to get them on shore.
Also, when i catch one, i bake it with diced potatoes like an hour after i catch it. Some of the tastiest and most satisfying stuff ever.

We got pebble beaches like in both of my pics, so you cast it out. The last few years are worse and worse, but in general it isnt too hard. Often you wont catch any, but some nights you will get 2 or 3.
Usually fished in the evening, 7pm and later. But you gotta find their time. They like lights too. My best spot is one on the beach under a lightpole.

Ozzies fish them during the day too lol, i never tried tho.

Saight, i know americucks dont really into maps.
Adriatic sea.
Some i guess are... We can get smaller amberjacks, seabass, although way smaller, bluefish, mackerel, bonito, false albacores (or something similar) which should be a family member of tunas or mackerel, not sure.
So yeah, something similar, but smaller or at least somwehat related to atlantic fish.

I mainly target Seabass, Bluefish, Gilt Head Bream, other species of Bream.
On my to-catch list are: Amberjack, Mackerel, Bonito, Dentex, Leerfish, Mahi Mahi, and that one fish i dont know the english name of. Speedy fish in the mackerel family. I wouldnt mind some smaller tuna family species either. (False albacore?)

Go for it. I like mine so far although part of me wishes I didn't get the microguides. Not sure what I'm doing but somehow I manage to keep bending the bottom one up.

I think those are the ones with the little clicking knob on the bottom so you can remember what line is on it. If you grab one though, you should wait for a sale. The store brand stuff seems to go on sale quite a bit. I got mine for $80.
>>
>>718708

Yeah I was thinking I would avoid the micro guides. Don't want to waste the whole season away waiting for a sale though.

Bass Pro rods and reels are normally good value for money anyway, so wouldn't be bad at $120.

If you didn't, you can look up schematics for most reels. I break down my reels at least every 5 trips. After the first 3 times I can do them all without looking at the diagram.

Most people probably don't have to service as much as I do. Wading the surf punishes reels like no other fishing activity.
>>
>>718803
>Wading the surf punishes reels
concur, that s when a $400 reel is potentially > 4 $150 reels

>>718802
Here it is. I'll probably get use out of everything except the live target shrimp. They seem way too stiff for a shrimp imitator. Much prefer my vudu shrimp. The colors on the plastics are definitely nice for the surf though.

I've only had luck with them in rivers, like I said. Spoons and body baits in open waters. Their eggs are orange/pink/redish. Doesn't explain the blue, tho.

I got a smaller Okuma Safina Noir, which i should make into a light setup maybe. rn its only used for squid. Illget a pic of that later tonight.
>>
>>719150
It's hard with saltwater though. I wouldn't want to chance it running lighter tackle and then lose something nice. At least with freshwater if I'm running 4lb or 6lb, I can still normally get a bigger carp or catfish in if I go slow and pick it up out of the water by hand. Fishing saltwater from a pier, no chance.
>>
>>719142

As far as I can tell the only different bail less offers is weight? I've never had the bail slam shut on the spinfisher either. It's kinda hard to flip in general which I like.

They sell Bail removal kits though if I ever decide to go that way lol.

I'm guessing you're from the east coast?

I wet wade in Texas. My gear is also really light for wading the surf (7ft medium rod with 1000 series spinning reel, 10lb braid). Don't expect any fish more than 10lb while I'm fishing. Maybe a big jack crevalle at the most. You guys get really nice albies and stripers. We get reds and specks. The coasts in Texas are just really flat compared to those on the east coast. I can wade out maybe 50-75 yards from the shore and only be in belly deep water. Of course that also means I'd be swimming or jumping over some deep guts to get to that last standable sandbar. It's not something I've ever done while fishing though. Too many sharks.
>>
going to try to get out tomorrow to get some more bass and pickerel, its nice having a decent pond a mile from my house,

I went in the construction zone but it is fenced off before the lake. And I can't really walk along the shore because there are spots where the fence goes right up to trees and steep slopes on the edge of the lake. And the soil here is so damn sandy that it's impossible to walk along those steep slopes, it just crumbles away.

I wouldn't even want to do it with how loose the dirt/sand is. You don't even understand. Our soil here is like 70% sand, 30% dry ass dirt. After a couple steps, there would be no ground beneath my feet.

And that doesn't help the tree that is in between the fence in the water. If I could go through the fence after that tree, I could probably do it. But not trying to get arrested over a LTB lure.

Your best bet is to ask someone from that area, although you will be right near the LI Sound. Striper opens on April 15th, and bluefish should also be around by then. No need for huge gear, but a decent spinning reel with braid will be necessary.

Good porgy fishing for me is always in September. Fluke in May and June.

Check out the local fishing reports when you're due to visit, every area is different. If you find a fishing report for your area, you can often look at last year's, on the same day as well to give you an idea.

I'm April I will be targeting freshwater lmb, and Striper and blues. We'll see what the crazy weather brings this year. Then in may and June we get Fluke, then the summer is rough haha. Come September porgy and seabass, and then fall-January is tautog and trophy stripes.

I'm doing a rig with 2 droppers. The top dropper is gonna have a spoon and a few beads. How close should the hook be to the spoon? Is the spoon just to attract the fish from a distance, then when it's closer it goes for the live bait?

Tie a hi lo rig for bait. Use smaller hooks for porgy etc..size 1 or 1/0. You can use 5/0 if there are bass or blues around. Use clam or squid cut into straps.

For the other rod, try throwing a bucktail. You can work the middle or bottom. Start with a 1oz, maybe have a few other sizes to play with.

yeah i know, though m other rod is only 7 ft medium action, can probably only throw 1 ounce maybe a bit more, theres a small island just a bit from shore il try to gwt out onto

I got 2 big reels in their boxes. Assortment of hooks, swivels, 2 rolls of mono of different diameters. Long nose pliers, knife, at least 25 sinkers combined, 2 and 5 oz. and some other thingamajigs that i cant be arsed to remember now...

The two reels boxes actually made it far simpler to sort and pack my shit in the backpack.
>>
>>720246
I just got the biggest school backpack Wal-Mart had. I can bring 3 Plano boxes, 4 rods, pliers, hooks, splitshot, soft plastics, and a fuck ton of space to spare. I've yet to find one thing I could not fit.
>>
>>720278
you're probably bringing too much shit with you then. Things to pack:
Rag
1 Plano box with terminal tackle (leads, hooks, leader material, swivels, jig heads)
1 Plano box with your favorite hard baits
Ziploc bag with your favorite soft plastics
Bottled water
pliers
knife
nail clippers

Bring at most 2 rods. 1 is recommended.

You shouldn't even be digging into your backpack that much. Really just bring it so you can change lures/technique to match the conditions or you get broken off. Your pliers and rag should be in your pocket.
>>
How do you guys stand on 2 piece rods? I've only ever had them because I drive a pretty small car so a 7 foot 1 piece rod wouldn't fit. What are the downsides?
>>
>>720290
I drive a civic and can fit my 7' one pieces in without bending them. Just be creative with the angle and it'll be fine.

2 piece rods are fine if you're traveling. Especially quality travel rods like the g. loomis one. You will only really lose out on sensitivity and if you're bait fishing or using a 9'+ rod you're not really going to be losing much functionality.

Also think of it this way: all those mexican poachers are using cheapo $30 two piece combos from walmart and they're still able to deplete a fishing hole in no time. Any rod will probably work fine.

They sell actual fishing backpacks if you want. I bought one for my brother. It holds 4x 3600 boxes like in the pic, then has a nice big insulated pocket on top and a bunch of smaller pockets for whatever. I think it ran around $60 or $70 but prices are all over depending on brands or sales.

Not him but 1/8" away from the edge of the spool is fine and improves cast distance. If the braid is laid correctly and tightly, there won't be any problems.

When you cast with your line starting from a position closer to the outside of the spool you encounter less drag. The line won't hit the top edge of the spool as much or drag across it. This improves casting distance by a good 10-20%.

It happens to me too. I think it also has something to do with the diameter of the spool. I can fill my 4000 series all the way to the brim but my smaller ones need to be filled 1/6" from the edge or I get terrible tangles.

This is using power pro. And you're not wrong. It will cause tangles but you just have to figure out what works for the weight of lures you cast and how many $$$ in braid you want to risk.

I still remember one time when I was like 10 or maybe 12 years old, I was fishing at this dirty little pond by my house. I caught a bigger carp (7-8lbs) and some Mexican dude having a little family cookout came over and offered me $5 for it. I kept telling him he doesn't want to eat it, but he insisted. I'm sure it tasted like shit when they tossed it on the grill. Hopefully they spiced it up real good.

I really need to toss out a carp line one of these days. It's been so long since I caught one and lots of these lakes have some huge like 30" carp just lurking around and they are fearless.
>>
>>720394
Of course. I walked like 50' from the shore to the parking lot and just hucked him onto the asphalt on a hot summer day.

Plus people don't really target them and they don't have predators, so some little ponds and lakes have huge carp that have just been living there and growing for years and years. One of my secret bass ponds in IL in this retirement apartment complex had a couple carp that were ~36" and would always just be cruising around at the top of the water. These things had to weight 20lbs.

It was hard to fish for them though because I would get kicked out within an hour most days so I couldn't really toss out carp lines and wait around. It was a situation where I would stop by for 20min and catch 5 nice largemouth and leave.

Throw a half a can of corn kernels around the area beforehand, you'll get every single Carp in that pond within the hour.

90% of the time Pelicans and other animals grab them so not exactly a complete waste.

Always check to make sure they aren't pregnant females if you put them back in the water, fish eggs are pretty hardy.

SJ starts at $70 USD
SJ has replaceable batteries, GP does not.
SJ better camera resolution on stills 12MP vs 8
same on video resolution.
SJ comes in bright yellow which means I can find it when I drop it/lose it.

Yeah I worried about that. I normally leave them for the birds. I have thrown one back in the water and I kinda regretted it afterwards. It wasn't fat like it was pregnant. Even if it had eggs, I'm sure something would eat them up.

They don't have to be fat but yeah I imagine fish like fish eggs as much as rich people do. Some could still survive though.

I definitely could've google'd that myself and I apologize for being dumb. /out/ is best board

Damn, they do a lifetime license. I wonder if FL does that and how much it would run.

I noticed that their licenses expire Aug 31 regardless of when you buy them. That sucks for a warmer state. IL expired like end of March every year too so you have to buy one every spring when you go out for the first time. But FL gives you the full 365 days.

Just remember saltwater is different. And keeping certain fish may require something additional too. Also looks like they have that $5/day for certain lakes, that's retarded.

If you go sparingly, remember that some places (probably like those $5 lakes) if you have to pay an entrance fee for that particular body of water, you may be covered to fish there through that fee. I used to fish at this lake in IL that was in some recreation area where I could pay a $3-$4 daily fee or like $15 for the whole year and you didn't need a state license to fish there.

I think Maine does but you have to get it before you turn 18.
Fish & Game have a whole bunch of F*'d up rules. Still looking into what mainebub said about reciprocity and I've can't find anything. $64 for a non-resident year license. I think I'm going 2 weeks but it's also close enough that I could road trip.

Is it really to the point where I can get in trouble for just fishing in the local river even if I have one of those yearly licenses? I go to U of Alabama and there's a comfy river like 500 feet from my dorm room and a short walk from my future apartment. I could probably just google the rules on that, too though. I just didn't realize there were all of these $5 a day type of rules and such.

>Less than a mile from the NY border in CT
>All these awesome fishing spots just over the border but the NY license is very expensive for non-residents
darn

No, the regular $13 yearly freshwater license should be fine. Often times there are trout stamps and stuff if you want to keep certain fish. That's mostly for places where they stock them.

Are you a resident of Alabama? It will probably cost more if you are just going to school there.
>>
>>720452
Yeah I'm a Florida resident so I imagine it may cost more. My area in Florida has weird laws where all the neighborhoods have big ponds and rivers that you don't need a license or anything to fish in (mainly just tiny bass) which are p cool, so that's why I was asking. Glad to hear that just the basic license will do, though. Cheers pepsifriend

Look into it more, maybe you can get a student discount or something like that. That would be cool. You might just have to pay full price though. But if freshwater is $13 for a resident, I can't imagine it being more than $50 or $60. You could probably buy daily or weekly passes too if you only go out a couple times but it would be inconvenient to have to grab a daily pass every time you have the urge to go fishing. And you might be able to get away without a license if you are really cheap. I have never been asked for my license because of where I fish. But I wouldn't risk losing my gear and a fat ticket to save a few bucks.

>hooked him in the tongue instead of the lip

I've noticed that on fish too. It's probably because it actually hurts when it hooked through their tongue, where as they don't really feel it though their lip. I could be wrong though.

That's what I figured
>>
>>720469
>buy license
>get cooler with ice
>fish from midnight to 6 am
>put fish on ice
>sell fish at farmers market
>made $50 +more in one day

i need to find a place around here to buy fish from me,
>>
>>720473
I thought it was illegal to sell fish that were recreationally caught.
>>
>>720454
I you're a student technically you're a resident. You should qualify for either a resident or a student license.
Disclaimer: I did not look at AL F&G website.
>>
>>720469
Yeah but if you're on a mile away you're going to use it plenty. Worth it IMHO.
