Now is broken
broken 2
Got the IGH swap done. Ended up adding about 700g (11.9kg now) which is a bit more than I expected but still not a huge amount, the benefits more than make up for it.
Need to replace one spoke and paint the rim so it matches the front. May even replace the rim altogether when I can be bothered to lace up a new one but this'll do for now.
OG Sunday frame
Perfect timing, just got home from picking up this 1981 Fuji S-12S LTD. LTD stands for limited, which means it came with barcons and double butted tubing. Full suntour groupset. Nice chromed fork and dropouts.
The red bar tape and saddle look like shit but that's okay. The hoods are way too high though.
2006 Kestrel Talon
Yep. I ride decade old carbon.
I'm a loose cannon. Come the fuck at me.
>>955962
Beautiful, nowt wrong with old carbon. Are those chainstays and seatstays separate parts or is that just the paint job?
>>955963
Disclaimer: that one is not actually my bike.
I just don't have a photo of mine handy.
Mine is set up with more modern bars & components. FUCK ergo-bends and ramped hoods.
There is a seam where the stays meet the seat-tube, so I would surmise that the rear triangle was bonded to it in some fashion as part of the manufacturing process. It's an extremely stiff rear triangle. Much stiffer than any contemporary road frame I've ridden. The small triangle and the shape of the tubing make it more like a time trial bike. It's a great climber but the ride is harsh - hell of a lot of fun for the first few hours, and just plain hell after that.
The only technologies that make me consider upgrading are hydro disc brakes and tapered headtubes. As far as I'm concerned it is otherwise the perfect frame.
>>955970
>FUCK ergo-bends
Why? They are pretty comfty.
>>955993
Chain is jammed behind the cassette for no damned reason leaving the rear derailleur almost dead. A simple post and pre-ride check over the bike parts could have saved its demise.
2015 surly cross-check frame in dream tangerine that I put all sorts of parts on. Super comfy and I'm not going to cut the steer any shorter cause I'm lazy. Just got some Ergon GX1 grips and I like them so far. Pupper is a mutt so I don't know his make/model
2013 Jamis Coda Elite. Mostly stock, Just swapped the seatpost for a lighter, longer Truvativ one, and put on some Maglock pedals. New bars inbound (Ritchey WCS 10D), should be on by mid week, and I will likely throw some lock-on grips on at the same time.
>>956027
Cheers bud.
It's an Alfine 11, my second one (picked this one up for £20 at a car boot sale). The first one has been used on both a short travel full sus MTB as well as a DH bike and been great, this one seems to be good as well although I have no idea how the previous owner treated it or how much they rode it.
>>955994
I can't really tell from the picture, but see if your derailleur hanger is bent AT ALL, it's designed to bend really easily to save your frame, and it's a easy 20 dollar fix.

>>956083
Nah, bought it from a guy on Craigslist last year, he said be bought the frame NOS in 2011 and built it up himself. His wife was making him downsize from four mountain bikes to two :(
The build is definitely a little idiosyncratic - it's a mishmash of M960 and M970 XTR, M760 and M770 XT, and a SRAM rear derailleur. It gets the job done though!
Ridley Orion, 2011. Had it not too long, original owner bought it a few years back, was selling to get into CX. Treats me well, replaced saddle, seatpost, and wheels. OKC in background, just found out about a trail system they have, it's a decent 35 mile ride, good for after work.

The build is nearly complete and am waiting for the Super Record brakes and brake levers to arrive in the mail.

This lil' bugger. Bit too much for light trails I ride, but figured it never hurts to have too much capasity compared to having too little.
>>956577
Why don't you get a new rotor and disk brake for your rear wheel? Otherwise your probably going to downgrade by putting a rim brake on unless it's high quality, but in that case you can afford to get a disk brake kit for your rear wheel
>>956592
Fag
>>956584
You can get a decent hydraulic disc for less than the cost of a new fork and V brake. They're a piece of piss to set up and require very little maintenance, and the braking performance will be so much better.
The weight difference is going to be negligible, it's basically going to be down to the extra weight of the disc which will probably be a tad over 100g for 160mm which is practically nothing. To drop the weight even more you'd need to get a significantly lighter fork and perhaps a lighter wheel.
1983 Miyata Six-Ten. Thrifted for 30usd, added bar-ends and what-not. Never really comfy, the frame is one size too small. I'm tired of fucking with it so selling =/
>>956150
>It's dry af in SoCal no need for heavy, unaerodynamic disks
you're allowed to prefer rim brakes but if you actually think they're more aero than discs you're dead wrong
when you have a disc rotor, you don't need a conventional box-section sidewall. you can shape the entire rim into one aerodynamic surface rather than being forced to shape it around the brake track. this also helps save weight. the gain from this far exceeds the drag penalty from the caliper (as the rotor itself has almost no drag owing to its low frontal surface area)
>>956580
You should see the old BMW M-Technik road bikes. They are fucking sweet.
>>956453
Thanks brah, yours is pretty rad. Jamis's Proforms are SO MUCH BETTER than Surly's, at least for me. That's not to mention that I got it on close out, so I got an even better deal than Proform. Plus my Coda ended up lighter than an identical straggler build would be. Only disadvantage the coda has is that it lacks DT shifter mounts, and I like DT shifters.
I have a Surly 1x1 that kicks ass, and I'm waiting on my Instigator to come in.

Inner tube can be a pain in the ass only if you dont use an anti puncture device or if you use them in a bad way. I mean, you dont need a plastic shit like i show in related pic, a pvc band is just enough (not the pvc which is used to print giant advertising, but the pvc used for zodiac boats). Only nails penetrate that shit in the practice, i mean, 1 puncture in about 1000 km. That's not bad considering trashy streets and hills with cactus and shit.

>>957392
Why are you worried about looking weird? Also, what's weird about just having a bike in your house? Not judging ya, necessarily, just curious as to why you think the way you do.
I'd get a hanger-thing (no idea what they're called, but you hang the bike from the front wheel on it) and mount it on the wall from the front wheel, though, if I wasn't ok with just leaning it up against a wall.
My bike is a 1990-something Ochsner road. Made from Reynolds 531, has Campy Veloce on it. Want to replace the groupset, it's a lil clunky, but the frame and wheels are nice. Good buy for $350, I think.

>>957501
Not really, Raleigh used to make an equivalent Reynolds steel frame with modern parts that sold for about what you paid shipped

Masi, owned by Pacific bike also makes a decent steel road bike frameset for around $400

Just after this I rode across a freshly ploughed field, tyres sunk in so much that the pedals were hitting the ground.

I've not been a fan of the 'trektrektrek' badging on this generation of Madone, but since they completely changed it into an aero bike that costs waaay too much (with the current model) I've become more nostalgic. Really you've got a great example of the Madone when it was a proper race bike. And with those subdued (almost retro) wheels, it's not too loud.
Got one suggestion: those ergo bend bars kinda make it look unnecessarily 'dated'. Some regular curved ones, nothing fancy, would look fantastic.

Why the fuck would you put a new groupset on it when it probably just needs news a very mild tuneup (new brake pads, clean and re-grease the chain, tweak the derailleur. New cables and housing at the very worst).
Learn to work on your goddamn bike before you drop a whole ton of unnecessary $$$ on parts that will work just as poorly in 6 months time because you can't be arsed to maintain it right.

Nice.
But hey, aren't those elite bottle cages? How big is the big bottle? Did it came loose on the gravel, or did it drop off the cage?
Cheers.

It's a 750ml and a tool bidon made out of a 500ml. Haven't had any problems and they've been shaken about a bit.

That totally is a Columbus Sticker. It's SL. That was a monumental brainfart. I think I will try and find some Record shifters. The Veloce ones just feel clunky and very rough. Thanks for the suggestion!

>he fell for the hybrid meme
>>958962
everything is a meme to you guys tho
>>958964
no no no. hybrids are just memes to roadies, CX bikes are memes to mtn bike riders, and road bikes are memes to commuters... but does any of that really matter? do you enjoy your bike? yes. then good thats all that matters.
>>958966
>do you enjoy your bike? yes. then good thats all that matters.
Sure. But there's also a the follow up question of
>do you still enjoy it in a couple of years?
The answer to that is dishearteningly often "no", with hybrids. And that is why hybrids are seen as a meme.
>>958981
>The answer to that is dishearteningly often "no", with hybrids
And why is that? There is nothing inherent with hybrids that means they can't last as long as your typical drop bar road bike, especially when the hybrid term can encompass many different types of bike.
>>958981
>>958982
idk about others but for me I end up getting a new bike every other year it seems like. The bike I kept the longest was a cheap front suspension mtn bike. So even if I love the bike there will always be something newer and less broken for me to ride.. I am just glad I am not going through frames every 6 months anymore like I did when I was younger.
>>958982
A hybrid is not really good at anything. Mostly due to ergonomy. When you reach a certain level you're going to start to always feel limited by your bike, regardless of what kind of riding you do. Ok, except for inner city commuting. Hybrids can be pretty good for that, but i personally feel a real road bike is just as good for that, and more versatile.
This is all assuming a decent quality bike, of course. Shitty components are always going to make your ride feel shitty after a while, no matter the type of bike.
>>959003
That's just your personal habit and it's completely irrelevant, it has nothing to do with the type of bike.
>>959005
>except for inner city commuting. Hybrids can be pretty good for that, but i personally feel a real road bike is just as good for that, and more versatile.
Who's to say he isn't using it as a commuter? Obvious he isn't racing on it (despite the fact that decent hybrids can be pretty damn fast), but a bike not being suitable for a certain type of riding isn't a negative aspect of it.
The only way a drop bar road bike is going to be better for commuting is being more aero and so a bit faster. For some people however they can have multiple disadvantages such as cost, comfort, and control in certain situations.
That's a perfectly decent bike and I'm sure it'll serve that guy well as long as it's set up correctly.
>>959015
>Who's to say he isn't using it as a commuter?
Not me. Didn't mean to sound like a hater. I'm just speaking my mind in the general sense, based mostly on personal experience.
>a bike not being suitable for a certain type of riding isn't a negative aspect of it
It is when it's the kind of riding you might like to do, if not now then in the future.
>The only way a drop bar road bike is going to be better for commuting is being more aero and so a bit faster.
The way you say it makes it sound so insignificant, but time saving is the least of it. Aero and speed actually have significant implications for comfort and and fun. I tend to be more comfortable on my drop bars than on my flat bars.
>>959017
>It is when it's the kind of riding you might like to do, if not now then in the future.
But if we're going to assume that he's going to want to be road racing in the future then why not also assume that he's going to be doing DH or BMXing? There are many people on here that don't do any competitive riding, probably the majority that actually post their bikes.
>The way you say it makes it sound so insignificant
Depending on speed it can be fairly insignificant and not worth the disadvantages. Total riding time is also a factor, the longer the time the more time saved.
>Aero and speed actually have significant implications for comfort and and fun
You're making the assumption that he rides for fun, that he finds going fast fun, and that the bike isn't fast enough to be fun. Whilst my flat bar bike is mainly used for commuting I also find it fun to ride and easily fast enough, and the flat bars give me greater control to ride stuff that I find fun (light off roading).
I don't see how being more aero can be more comfortable though, that's down to riding position and fit and some bikes even go as far as to sacrifice comfort for aero (TT bikes).
>I tend to be more comfortable on my drop bars than on my flat bars.
Good for you, but not everyone is you.
>>958966
CX bikes are so much faster on smooth single track and gravel though, so they actually have a valid purpose.
>>958962
Throw some drop bars on there, at first glance, no one has to know but your mechanic.

>>959042
Aye, Alfine 11, it's glorious.
>>959052
That's the funny thing, if it had drop bars no one would be giving him shit. They seem to think it's some requirement to having a real bike, and that flat bar bikes are all slow and for casual losers.

Let me guess, you're basing that off the head tube length. You seem to have failed to notice the spacer stack on my bike, the white Boardman (think it's something like 40mm). Also the Hybrid frame's HT is like 15mm shorter than the Road's.

198X Spectrum Custom 56cm(?)
Full 7400 DA, first gen STI. The hubs are interesting, bike isn't with me at the moment so not sure on the producer. Frame has bubbling so might have to repaint soon. Swapping tires at the end of the season to match. Having trouble finding replacement bartape. Second owner.
This bike saw the light for the first time in years just last week. I figure I need to clean the chain, and I already pumped the tires with air pressure, so is there anything else I should be worried about or check, like brakes?
