It's time to yell strange prayers.

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, pity Jangle's Thrift Tourney, listen to Keiji Haino scream, and just let the good times flow.

It was Bongwater - Double Bummer (ImposterTuco) vs Crash Worship - This (Kanzler). I liked Crash Worship's album, it was interesting, yeah, but kinda raw, erratic. Sounded like a pre-Cut Hands music. I scored it 6.
Bongwater, on the other hand, was complete and solid. Again, lyrics are on top. A decent, enjoyable album.

I saw it. I generally agree with you, honestly, but when there's a lack of effort put into the creative process to a point where you can't even call it a creative process anymore, it stops having any redeemable value for me. I could randomly strum my guitar for a bit and create something more creative than nightcore. It rubs me the wrong way, ya feel? But whatever, if you're honestly so hell-bent on listening to already existing songs sped up in Audacity, do your thing, I guess.

>Beppu - Coercion
Highly textural dark and tribal ambient, and eventually techno. Anyway, the rym ratings are telling me yes, but my ears are telling me no. As in... I'm not a fan.

The first two tracks are unbearably boring dark ambient, in all its cheesy grungy synth glory, with minimal sporadic beat accompaniment. I'd struggle to call it techno, but ritual ambient wouldn't be too far off.

"Antecedent Conditions" set the high water mark for the album with a whirling maelstrom of saw wave synthesizer-pulse beats (the first real instance of techno on the album imo) and industrial clamor. The track builds and builds to an impossibly noisy climax.

The following track, "Thought Tapes", started as another boring dark ambient piece, featuring a short synth loop. It soon shifts gears into a booming techno track that tries to build to the heights of "Antecedent Conditions" but unfortunately gets a bit bogged down under its own weight, as different noises come flying from all directions. The next track is essentially the same thing again. And the next.

And so on and so forth. Every track effectively does reenacts the same shtick with minimum variation. It's a simple and effective formula: start with ambient synth loops --> introduce hard techno beat --> build to climax --> brief ambient coda, and every track after "Antecedent Conditions" copies this to the greatest of its abilities. And while the tracks certainly touch the same pleasure points as say, Tzusing's "A Name Out of Place Pt. II" I far prefer Tzusing's more dynamic means to an industrial techno end. It's just that Coercion starts approaching tedium with its track-by-track repetition of the same dull formula.

Sleater Kinney - Dig Me Out
well, was very very underwhelmed by this
The vocals were god awful, the vibrato on her voice in particular really rubs me the wrong way, like there's not really a solid 'melody' or 'tune' to her voice so it's clearly an attempt at a punk vocal but it fails in that regard because it doesn't land on an emotional level at all. It's a shame because the vocals do overshadow the rest of the music here, it's impossible not to focus on them.
yeah, didn't like this much

This Heat - John Peel Sessions
this was cool, liked this
probably prefer the performances of the debut tracks on here over the actual studio recording, they had a little more meat on the bones, Fall of Saigon in particular...

The idea of this is really cool, a punk album with almost all drums, it's pretty daring man
unfortunately not everything aligns just so, some of the vocals courtesy of Johnny Rotten aren't really that great, sometimes some of the beats are iffy
but when everything goes the way it is supposed to, this is a very good album, might come around to it, def. relistens

I'm surprised he didn't win my tourney cause he ended up reccing me two 4.5s (would be 5s if I didn't change my RYM rating system) and one 4 (which was beaten by yamir's 4.5) which is some solid reccing. Curtis has the soul in him, for sure. Some of the most beautiful funk/soul ever recorded. The only problem I have with this album is that the shorter songs feel a lot less developed, just because the longer tracks seem so much better in comparison.

>Who else makes /taste/ here?
just about everyone imo
we've all managed to rec each other 10/10 albums at some point, but I think I've been the one to benefit the most out of this since I'm much more easily impressed than others

Termy got me into red house painters and more into Sun Kil Moon
Thomas got me into Slowdive
Trans got me into Liturgy
ImposterTuco managed to change my mind about Swans in general

Everyone else constantly surprises me with their taste, but if I had to choose the one person who's had the most impact on me it would have to be Torts. That said, /daily/ really is just a giant melting pot, and it wouldn't be the same without everyone participating

>Angkanang Kunchai - อีสานลำเพลิน
>Molam, Luk Thung

This is cool. A couple places I've found with Google say this is considered similar to The Velvet Underground & Nico in Thailand due to how it influenced molam, but nobody really elaborated on why that is so. Seeing as there's not many molam releases that came before this, I'm guessing it's because this one of the first true albums in the genre.

This album's songs are all pretty short, and compared to the one molam album everyone here has heard, it's pretty slow. It's on the more folk side of the molam spectrum as opposed to the electric side that people here are more familiar with, but it's still pretty good. Kunchai has a stunning vocal performance throughout, which is definitely the focus of the album given that it's mixed in pretty high. The instrumentals are also great; they seem very inspired by western psychedelic music despite mostly being horns and drums.

It's on slsk if you're interested.

>>66284457

Egor Letov supremacy soon. I would guess people here would be more interested in the more avant stuff (Kommunizm and Tsyganyata i Ya s Ilyicha) or the more psychedelic stuff (GrOb reunion years and Egor i Opizdenevshie).

Also, where would you get started on Diamanda Galas?

It was Moonshake - Eva Luna (Tuco) vs Robbie Basho - Venus In Cancer (yamir).
I'd like to thank Tuco for his input in this tourney, because all of the albums, including Eva Luna were really great (special thanks for SCG).

I'll have to check this out. Molam has intrigued me

speaking of which, I couldn't finish that meme molam album, it was so numbing and repetitive.
I liked the guitar but that constant click beat cowbell and the bit-crushed drum fills just took me right out of it every time they flew by.
I don't get the hype, didn't feel that genre defying or mind blowing at all.
it is an interesting little artifact so I will not rate it out of respect.

I did listen to this though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv6uahpoYVU

I can put it on mega if you want.

Also check out Phimpha Phonsiri - อีสานเขียว. It bridges the traditional and western influences pretty well, and it's even more psychedelic than the Kunchai album if you want more of that. It's only on YouTube as far as I can find, though.

The cheesy cowbell is one of my favorite part of 8 + 9, though I can see why people find it obnoxious.

>Steve Roach - Structures from Silence
This was a very comfy album to just stare off into space for an hour not thinking about anything at all. I loved how spacey and wide open it sounded and it really gave me a sense of just floating in space. That said there was really not much actually going on musically with this. I like slow moving stuff, but this was basically not moving at all. Each song had exactly one idea that was repeated for their entire track length. So in summary i liked what was there, i just wished there was more stuff going on. blue triangle/10

>1997, Noise Rock, Experimental Rock

And endless, devastating noisy circle of repetitive krautish drums interspersed by a crazy sax reminding of Zorn and Brotzmann, all of this iced with fuzzy, feedback-drenched guitars repeating obsessively the same riffs over and over in epilectic spasms and trance indulging reflections. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
[1973]

Not really as amazing or out of this world people made this out to be, but there's a legit good song, the great gig in the sky. Now that one's great, but the rest is very awkward, especially the baroque pop choruses with ill-fitting instrumentation. Kind of wish I'll like piper at the gates of dawn or meddle because if not i'll have to trash pink floyd as a band.

Oh boy, I haven't updated my chart for awhile. Time for reviews™

>Tears For Fears - Songs From the Big Chair
>New Wave, Synthpop

Shout and Everybody Wants to Rule the World are of course classics of the poppier side of New Wave and are some of the few 80s hits that I can stand. But the other tracks, which are a bit more artsy in presentation, are not shabby as well.

My biggest gripe with Songs From the Big Chair is that many of the artsier songs sort of overstay their welcome. Listen, for example, failed to really keep my interest in its attempt to be a slow ballad to close the album off.

Still, this might be the stronger 80s pop albums out there, though I think Hounds of Love will still always be my favorite pop album from 1985.

>Keiji Haino - Soul's True Love
>Free Improv

>Disk 1

I'm admittedly not that familiar with Haino, but this scared the hell out of me. The fittingly titled Hell of Screams is exactly what it sounds like. Haino shows off an impressive range of screams while some solid piano and drum freakouts back him up. The second track is pretty similar to the first, but Haino plays guitar and the drummer steps back to let the keyboardist do some Doors inspired psych jams. Cool.

>Disk 2

Basically Watashi Dake, but lacking the emotions and sincerity that made me like Watashi Dake. I wasn't impressed, and most of the tracks don't vary enough to keep itself interesting. Nice track titles, though.

>Disk 3

The best one. I'm not entirely sure how Haino did it, but this sounds like being lost in some sort of horrible forest. The disk starts out with a half hour of creepy wilderness ambience, culminating to a sudden shift to two very garbled improv tracks. So garbled, in fact, that I couldn't really make out what I was hearing (but that's the idea, because the recording quality is pretty stellar). Then you get half an hour of harsh noise. I was pretty consistently creeped out for the duration of this, and I am still pretty astonished by it. How the hell did he even make this? Was it live?

>Disk 4

Not bad, but not as strong as Disk 3. It's a Fushitsusha release, and the noisiest Fushitsusha release I've heard so far. Not much to really talk about, but I do think this would work better as Disk 3 as opposed to being what closes off the comp.

All in all, this was a great way of showing off the diverse styles of the very diverse Haino. 3 is definitely worth listening to at the very least, and I think that alone makes it a 4/5 in my book.

What next?

I Hate Myself - 10 Songs (1997)
>emo, post-hardcore

Furthers my hypothesis that every single emo album has one track that's about 10x better than the rest of the songs on it. Like "For Meg", "Angry Son", and "Sowing Season (Yeah)", this album has "This Isn't the Tenka-Ichi-Budôkai". I can't get over this track, it's simulatenously loud and noisy and punky but also really pretty at the same time, it's got an impossibly beautiful melody. And I like all the tracks that follow this same epic, near-screamo vibe, but the more twinkly poppy tracks do nothing for me. It's about half and half, so I still like the album as a whole quite a bit, but I'd sure love a harder album from these guys a whole lot more.

Ground-Zero - 革命京劇 Ver.1.28 (Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Ver.1.28) [Kakumeikyōgeki] (1996)
>sound collage, turntable music, musique concrète

Good shit, I'll definitely buy into the hype for this one. It's almost kind of an odd mixture between found sounds, concrète stuff and more batshit insane jazzy, noisy avant-prog that I've come to expect from Ground-Zero, and when both of these are done separately I like the more straightforward tracks more, I really don't care for the strictly sound collage pieces here, I just think they're too "random" for lack of a better word. But when both of these styles mix, it's something to behold. Very good, but I don't know, not feeling this in 3.5 territory quite yet.
