It's time to Fish

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, look at Jangle's tourney and wonder why he's even trying anymore, listen to Fishmans, and just let the good times flow.

First and foremost...

>Jazz Composer’s Orchestra
Jazz supergroup awh yeah all nice and shit. Hated the piano sound on Communications #11 but if you can get past the fact that it sounds like a crappy MIDI then you might be able to appreciate it’s ferocity, which this album has plenty to spare.
8

>Maiden Voyage
Enjoyable, but not really attention-demanding. First and last tracks in particular were realreal nice, but this wasn’t really on the same level as his others I’ve heard
6

>Soliloquy for Lilith
Better than Homeopathy but by very little at all. The atmosphere was nice, and there were sections of tracks that were well-textured, sure, but why even bother if that texture is the wealth of the song that really just plays on a few second loop? I can see those very into ambient digging this, but with the knowledge of the few dark ambient albums I have enjoyed, I thought this was somewhat poor.

Felt this needed a signal boost just to be sure it's seen:

98.12.28 Otokotachi no Wakare by Fishmans Translation:

http://pastebin.com/T4iUkFB3

Here it is! Took quite a while, but it's mostly done.

If you spot anything off, feel free to notify me and I'll change it.

A few things worth noting order of appearance:
>The "SATO" exchange is pretty funny on Oh! Slime when listening to it now
>Literally no one knows what the fuck is said at the end of Oh! Slime, but a pretty good guess is there
>The speaking at the end of なんてったの (third track) are pretty pointless, EXCEPT for the fact Shinji says "We hope to do live shows next year as well as the following year", which is pretty peculiar given the circumstances of this album...
>The lyrics to Thank You...uh...
>The lyrics to 幸せ者 and 頼りない天使 (5th and 6th track, respectively) remind me of something Morrissey would write, honestly.
>While the banter on the third track is pretty pointless, the one on ひこうき(7th track) is REALLY interesting. Would definitely recommend you read through that.
>Fuck, man, this album is depressing but some of these tracks' lyrics made me feel more than I thought. Would recommend just skimming some of this if you have mild interest in the subject.
>Would appreciate feedback on the format, specifically the Literal vs. Stylized translations, both of which I think are important to an extent, but wouldn't be opposed to omitting either if need be.

And that's all! Feel free to reply with any mistakes you see or corrections you might have. Hope someone finds some use out of this as I have :D

I fucking FOUND IT!!!

So apparently it's in a location called "Okutama Camp" Or "Hikawa Camping Ground"

No wonder I couldn't find it. It's a big bridge and all but there exist almost no pictures of the bridge, and searching in English yielded no results. It's only when I searched the town's name, Okutama in Kanji that it came up with pic related. At least after a few months of searching now I know.

At a ten, my dude. Its 4 in the morning and I've been binge watching Peep Show all day. I use to live in London, so watching British television makes me feel all nostalgic.

Music wise, I've been listening to old Built to Spill and remembering how amazing they are. Also a lot of Japanese music and kpop.

cool, their Complete Discography has been in my backlog for ages, time to check it out
>Also, I did not know you like MCR and Green Day that much.
I keep coming back to these, really fun bands.
Old Green Day is kinda boring tho, their peak was 21st Century Breakdown.

What's your opinion on GD and MCR? They aren't really liked by the majority of /daily/ I think, but I see some fans occasionally

Monthly New-Wave challenge part.II

>Talking Heads • More Songs About Buildings and Food (1978)
4.0
Jerky guitars with slightly weird/funky rhythms, madman vocals. Great stuff.

>New Order • Low-Life (1985)
4.0
I used to think that New Order was more a "singles-band" more than an "album-band" but this LP has a LOT of good tracks tho.
>Love Vigilantes
>Sunrise
>Elegia (aka the most depressive song ever made. The 2008 2-Cd edition has the superior 17 minutes edit, adn the 12" version of the Perfect Kiss as well)
>Sub-Culture

>The Cars • s/t (1977)
1.5
Sounds like a lite version of the Talking Heads without funkiness, but more on the power-pop side. Being released in 1977 is worth nothing, but it's still unmemorable for non-nostalgic ears imo. The last track, All Messed-up is catchy tho.

>The Jam - Sound Affects (1980)
3.5
Tight post-punk even if I tend to prefer The Style Council or Peter Weller solo career. Solid songwriting (the B-side is better), and it deserves its praise. Recommended if you like Television Personalities and Echo & the Bunnymen.
>Monday; Boy About Town. Both have great arrangements.
>Set The House Ablaze is amazing https://youtu.be/_oL-dBxvPiw
>Start! with a riff picked right from Taxman.
The second CD of the 2010 re-edition adds a lot of cool stuff: covers (eg. Rain, Waterloo Sunset), demos, B-sides (Lisa Radley, Dreams of Children).

>The Diodes - Tired Of Waking Up Tired: Best Of The Diodes (The Original Recordings: 1977-1979)
4.5
Compilation of their 2 first albums, full of great power-pop/punk/new-wave anthology, with almost no bad songs (but 70 minutes of Ramones-tier anthem gets a bit tiring desu). Buzzcock-tier. https://youtu.be/9eyBzgnvDF4

>XTC - Drums & Wire (1979)
0.5
I really can't stand their quirky punk-ish roots. Give me 80s psychedelia-pop or nothing. Making Plans for Nigel is decent, but the other tracks, starting with Helicopter, are just annoying.
Good tracks:
>Nigel
>Life Begins At The Hop
>Chain of Command

The fact that so many books still name the Beatles "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success: the Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worth of being saved.

well, that was bizarre
Really cool stuff going on here, doesn't really get "good" until the 2nd track, the first is a little overdrawn and tedious, liked the guitar most of all, the vocals clearly have passion behind them, the drums are cool, yeah man, liked it
That last track as well, whoo boy

since I didn't know there could be a tie, I made a restriction for the 1st round, which is no ties, cause it would've been unfair to those who already lost due to me not knowing there could be a tie

It was Cardiacs - Sing To God (Transgod) vs Beat Happening - You Turn Me On (herb kid). Basically, it was a tie (both 6), but I liked Beat Happening a little more (music is p good, vocals are kinda eh). But I guess I'll dig Cardiacs more if I give them couple more listens.

P.S. I changed Kanzler's grade from 6 to 7, because I listened to his album couple more times and it got better for me

>Bohren & der Club of Gore - Black Earth
I enjoyed the beginning of this album quite a bit, but after a few songs it became apparent that the whole album was gonna sound exactly the same. Almost every song followed the same basic formula. Start off with a low drone and 5 secondsish of a dark ambient sound that repeates for the whole song. Add in some slow keyboard noodling and drums. Halfway through the song stop everything and then come back in with a saxophone. The stuff that was being played sounded nice and i guess as background music it would be pretty pretty good, but it totally lost my interest. Towards the middle of the album there was some cool dark ambient stuff going on and i wish there was more experimentation with that throughout. The Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble is just a better more interesting version of this. yellow circle/10

I've learned to almost completely ignore RYM ratings when it comes to punk music. This shit is great, for instance:

https://rateyourmusic.com/release/ep/%E3%81%B0%E3%81%A1%E3%81%8B%E3%81%B6%E3%82%8A/%E4%B8%80%E6%B5%81/

https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/da_slyme/da_slyme/

https://rateyourmusic.com/release/ep/uj3rk5/uj3rk5/

It's actually gotten to the point where I get excited when a punk release is rated poorly.

ok so round 1 is done

It was Dowland - The Consort Of Musicke - First Booke Of Songes (Anonymousé) vs Gong - Camembert Eclectique (triangle). Renaissance piece was just wow man. Never thought I'm into lute, but it sounds so warm and amazing here in the context of other instruments. The guy's voice from "Come Again" and "Can She Excuse My Wrongs" is just beyond incredible (well, obviously he's a professional). As for Gong, that was a p good album, I liked it more than I thought I would. A solid 7 for this one.

Since I clearly have a soft spot for classical, I am banning it from the second round, so no one can have an easy win with it. Neoclassical is an exception, I'm somewhat neutral to it.

Eh, I guess. I find it extremely hard to hear that music without cringing, but if you genuinely enjoy it, guess I can't stop you. At least you're not using your enjoyment of this kind of music as a way to deliberately alienate other people.

I guess it's not even that exceptional, considering most of /mu/ likes Weezer a lot and Weezer is pretty much no different from pop punk in terms of target audience and talent, really.

>>66264671
they're taking a break, will return soon

Yeah, and it's not that I mostly listen to PC Music or pop punk, just more than other people
Only 6 records in my chart are these genres
My taste changes alot, I'm excited to see what I'll like in one year, I doubt it's pc music

Also listenalong album? Or wait for tomorrow?
>>
is Haino playing a fuckin HOJOK????

>>66265030
But Weezer literally is just a teen pop band for angsty boys

>>66265058
I'll think about it once I stop being distracted by nasty manga grampa
>>
>This Haino cleavage

O-oh my
>>
>>66265030
Hm, I'm with Termi here, Weezer is annoying, being a teen pop band isn't really the problem for me, but their style and lyricism is hard to tolerate
>>
>>66265179
That's fair. They are still miles ahead the 90's Pop Punk scene in terms of songwriting and talent.
>>
>>66264851
> I find it extremely hard to hear that music without cringing
this makes me sad
you are probably unable to enjoy nightcore too :(
>>
I like how Haino is jumping and jerking his body like a madman while Hayward looks like he's about to keel over and die.
>>
>>66265258
I don't really listen to Weezer for the lyrics. They serve the music well, but they don't hold up on their own. I listen to Weezer for the uplifting energy, attitude, and exceptional songwriting techniques (eg: the guitar tone and riffs on Pinkerton).
>>
>>66265258
At least when it comes to pop punk, most people on /mu/ agree that it's not some sort of supreme art that deserves to be in end-of-the-decade lists, while many do seem to think early Weezer is some sort of genius pop perfection that deserves all the acclaim it gets (and those same people scoff at the diea of listening to Green Day, probably). It's really just a bunch of dudes playing pop rock songs with lyrics that introverted teenagers can relate to. Problem's not so much that people enjoy them, but that people seem to think that Weezer's somehow qualitatively great even though their lyrics are largely crap and their songwriting is neither something new nor a perfection of a previously established songwriting style.

>>66265428
>you are probably unable to enjoy nightcore too :(
is this bait

>>66265281
I mean, not really all that much. Maybe a bit. Not "1.00 higher average RYM rating than yr typical pop punk record" better.

meh okay
Your pick was drone-y in a really interesting way, got sliightly annoying towards the end, didn't like the talking.
Transgod's album was kinda slow in the beginning, but also quite beautiful. Once the vocals kicked in (overly autotuned I guess) it got more and more interesting, really cool stuff.
>>
>>66265632
I'd argue that their style and approach to songwriting is noteworthy. I wouldn't go as far as to say unique, but I will say that it qualifies them to be considered a cut above the rest (I'm using Pinkerton as a reference, not a huge fan of their debut). Keep in mind that i'm not a crazy Weezer fan either, but credit is given where credit is due.

Haino and Hayward really got their thing going by now

>>66266022
nightcore is pretty much the only music I won't allow you to like. No other type of music is this devoid of originality, talent, or effort, in fact it could only possibly work if it had some sort of artistic concept behind it, but it doesn't, it's literally just music sped up. I don't care what music you make, as long as you at least put a bare minimum of effort into creating art that is your own, and that's exactly what nightcore doesn't do.

So yeah, the second half of the Haino & Hayward show was a lot better. First half wasn't bad and they experimented with some interesting ideas, but it all seemed too unfocused and they just kinda went from one idea to another without it feeling very coherent. Hayward also doesn't feel like much of a multi-instrumentalist to me, his piano playing is far from outstanding and his percussion in the first half of the show didn't really do justice to his talent. Once he got behind the drums and really let himself loose in the second half it got really good, just solid Haino guitar wank with excellent drumming. They felt a lot more in tune with each other during this section, too. Was cool, had fun, the memes were dank.

I hope nasty manga grampa sticks.

>devoid of originality, talent, or effort
>originality, talent, or effort
Why would any of this be relevant to whether a listening experience is enjoyable or not??

None of these are really attributes of the sound
and they don't come into play in the actual listening experience.
>>
I've just gotten into Carpenter Brut and would really appreciate some recs of similar stuff.

>Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke, Oren Ambarchi - I wonder if you noticed "I'm sorry" Is such a lovely sound It keeps things from getting worse
>free improvisation, noise rock

Awesome shit, start off with this strange folkish piece with Haino playing a traditional Turkish string instrument and chanting 2deep4me quips while Jim on bass and Ambarchi on guitar(?). The whole first track has this frantic and haunted energy until the second track where it explodes in this hypnotic and droning psychedelic mass that follows the rest of album until the very end when the folk wraps this up in a neat bow.

>Weston Adam - Verdens oye
>ambient

This one is a interesting ambient experience, Almost taking on the ambient ascpect of some atmospheric black metal act without getting into the black metal. It carries on a mythology much like the album cover suggests, vikings in the woods during a time forgotten. The bulk of the album experience is lush mystical keyboards with moments of low ancient chanting and field recordings of pure nature. The result is a really comfy music experience.

I need to start regularly checking the Boiler Room fb for up coming events.

DAWN, Machinedrum, Murlo, & Yamaneko
Staycore

Some considerations on
>Bioentropic Damage Fractal
>Grindcore, IDM, Sound Collage, Post-Rock, Glitch

Even if I really liked pretty much everything in here, it strikes me as incomplete. There's something so incredibly and pointlessly violent into the most energetic moments that at times you just don't know when it will end. A bit like being strapped to an electric chair giving you only brief, high shocks but keeping you alive as your flesh burns. The tone of the guitars in the post-rock pieces and the last long track is incredible, and so is the use of noise and the collage of sounds. It really is an intense work and I will definitively relisten to it. But maybe not now.
