Do you want to buy a guitar as a status symbol, to feel young again or to make up for your wasted teenage years? If so fuck off.
Do you want to buy a guitar because you're interested in music and learning an instrument? Get one, learn it, have fun. It's never too late to learn an instrument.

Does anyone here have any experience with fretless conversions? I modded my Fernandes Tremor 5 with Häussel Bassbars and a Glockenklang EQ and I'm quite tempted to go all the way and make it a fretless, but do it decently (replacing the frets with small pieces of maple as markers and finishing the neck with gun stock oil). Has anyone any experience with it? Can that be done in one day or should I take the weekend off? Any advice in general is appreciated.
>>
>>66230654
I have a bass here that the previous owner defretted, and as far as I know you'll always have to reshape the fingerboard in some way because they're simply not meant to be played as festless. The fingerboard is not levelled and therefore I get massive beating around the 12th fret.
>>
>>66230514
3 guitars, a bass and a mandolin. There are at least two guitars I really want but I think that might be a bit much. Might sell the bass since I don't really use it that much anymore. 2 of the 3 guitars don't have any resale value either.

>>
>>66231108
lol my main guitar is a 76 lp custom

you do realize that two different sets of pickups are never going to be exactly the same, right? if they really wanted to "prove" that the wood matters, they would have to take the pickups and all the electronics out of one of those guitars and swap them back and forth to get accurate results
>>
>>66231108
>chapman and guy who sells guitars
>implying they know what the fuck they're talking about
>implying they're not shilling

banez use basswood in almost everything, including Vai's JEM's. The problem with Ibanez is 99% of they're pickups are shite.
>>
>>66231247
so you think two identical pairs of pickup can differ vastly in sound but dont think wood makes a difference? wew
sure no pickups sound exactly the same, but the difference between two identical pickups is so fucking small compared to the difference wood type makes.

coincidentally the unregularities in the pickups make the guitars sound exactly like you would expect from the types of wood though. what an interesting coincidence.
>>
>>66230514
one abused ibanez gio.
>>
>>66231256
of course they are shilling, but i dont think they would rig a test like this, and it should be very apparent how different both guitars sound.
>>
>>66231365
you're brainwashed, you don't know what you're talking about, you are literally listening with your eyes and you are associating darker colors with warmer sounds

go read about how they make pickups and you'll realize why the same line of guitars built in the same factory sound different when you plug them into an amp
>>
>>66231108
Posting a video from a company is stupid, they will do everything to try to prove their guitars are different, even lying and overestimating their products.

>>66231256
They've switched to using Mahogany a lot more, and their pickups in the last models (RGDIX/RGAIX/SIX) seem a bit better.

there is literallly no point in arguing with you.
of course pickups make up the vast majority of the sound, but the wood type absolutely has a big impact on tone, a way bigger impact than the small differences in two identical pickups make up. that test showed how big thedifference between two identical guitars with differend wood types are and the tone fit perfectly what you'd expect from those types of wood. why are you still in denial? im getting baited, am i?

so your main guitar is an lp custom which is probably worth a few thousand dollars. why do you keep that and not stick our pickups in a pile of dogshit? it would still sound the same wouldnt it?
>>
>>66231463
You can't discard the source and the method when doing a precise experiment such as this one. There's too much wrong things in this video to be taken seriously.

hey guys, newbie here
I've been playing/learning acoustic guitar for couple months now,
a friend lends me his guitar (LAG) and I'm thinking of buying my own because I really enjoy this. I'm looking for used guitar.
there's this old Ovation made in Korea (1987), quite cheap
and there's Seagull mini jumbo entourage which I like the look of it. (price is 2 times the Ovation)

any advice ?
thanks
>>
First, I'm going to post a link to a blind test here. I'm going to ask you watch the whole video so you understand how to take the test properly. If you don't pay attention to the test, you won't be able to judge how well you, personally can differentiate bodies.

Next, I'll explain the science of how the body of a guitar does change the tone. You need to understand both of these things, because there's a big difference between ANY effect and an AUDIBLE effect.

No need to post results here, but try the test and see if you get beyond some small amount of deviation. See if it was difficult or easy to guess the material in each clip. And whatever you do, follow the directions.

tonewood is complete horseshit

pickups, scale length, gauge of strings make up 99.99% of the sound coming out of electric guitar.

>>
>>66231916
that video is fucking retarded

even just different angle on the pick on how it strikes the strings will give different tone out of the guitar

the strings are not even in contact with the wood, they are going into bridges or tail pieces of ferrules, you would have yet more stuff that a head of the actual body material in determining sound, fretboards do not change any tone either as the string is tensioned at the fret (metal), not the wood.

There's a strumming rig used for half the samples

Look, you're right about what you say for the most part. There are vibrations, very few of them, that make it through the metal parts and into the body of the guitar. Those are the ones I want to discuss.

To be clear I'm not a tonewood advocate. All my guitars are basswood simply because it's light and cheap. I still have an interest in explaining this stuff just because I want the rest of /gg/ to do more than just trust their ears. The debate will never end that way.

Anon I hacked off almost the entire body and replaced it with a bent wire. It flat-out did slightly change how the guitar sounds.

Material barely matters, but it does a little bit. Having a guitar that's now like 1/4 the size it used to be will affect tone.
>>
>>66232211
>There's a strumming rig used for half the samples

it's a suction cup attached to the body

is it placed in the EXACT same location on both guitars? did he use the same pick? is the angle on the pick striking the strings in exactly the same place in both examples? is that thing striking the strings at exactly the same speed? are the pickup and string heights exactly the same?

anyone who has played the guitar for 6 months knows how simple it is to angle or strike the string in different locations to get a warmer or brighter sound

I didn't really. Some things were really easy, and some things aren't. I don't really sing though. Alot of guitarist-songwriters sing in a way that's easy to do while playing. From what I gather you learn by just singing not focusing on pitch, and getting the guitar part committed to memory, and then when you can do that without thinking about it, you can focus on the singing.

Try to hit the notes, listen for beating, adjust your voice. Also don't do stupid stuff like me when I was singing in 5ths lower or higher than the song because 5ths almost sound as harmonic as an octave.

mim strats are really good, especially the hss versions. i have an hss mim strat, and it can play anything from blues and jazz to hard rock (probably metal too but i dont play metal) and anything in between. im currently satisfied with the pups but if you ever want better pups a loaded pickguard is only $250. mim strats are usually $600 new, although there are deals in guitar center and musicians friend that have them as low as $500.

a good amp is more important than a good guitar, though, remember that.

Schecters in the same price are made in indonesia too, so they should be the same quality, but the Demon 8 is 28" while the RG8 is 27", making it easier to have the right tension on the 8th string.
Don't bother with the Omen 8, it's 26.5", same for Jacksons. Unless you want mud.
Otherwise look into the used market, you might be able to find some used MiK for the same price, which will be better than indonesians

You can get a good 1x12" cab for about 100 bucks, for the head it would go from 200 to 500 depending on how much power and versatility you need.

this is true to a certain extent. singing has as much to do with your ears as it does with your throat. You might have a pleasant voice tonally but if you can't hear that your pitch is off then it doesn't matter.

So I have this Epi lp that I've been meaning to sell. It's in perfect condition (no dings, hasn't left my house since I bought it) but the only problem with it is that the neck pick up is out 99% of the time. I'm guessing it's a soldering issue because it randomly starts working when I pull the coil tapping knobs up and down. Now which would be smarter. sell the guitar as it is or get it fixed and then sell it?

>Learn songs that you like slowed down with the metronome.

Top tier advice. I'd really like to add to this something I do alot. That's learn songs you like with techniques you're not good at or need work with. Like legatos and arpeggios, or Vamping or String skips and etc etc etc. It's a great way to "practice" something that may or may not be arduous to do by itself in a controlled practice session. Plus it's great if you find yourself sucking at practicing redulsrly, or failing to learn or discover new techniques, it's alot easier to play a song, and it's better than nothing.

Cheers

you need to lube up the nut slots. Also, lift the strings up near the bridge a bit to make sure string isn't bunched up behind the saddle.

If these two things don't fix it, the nut slots probably need to be slightly widened. What gauge strings have you got? Post a picture of your headstock.

Make sure the strings aren't sticking in the nut or the trees. Graphite is a great lube for the nut(or get a bone one), just draw with a pencil in the grooves. For the trees if they're clean and smooth they should be good.

And wind your strings neat man. Stack them up right, you'd be surprised. Even on my acoustic when I half ass a string job I can bend it out of tune in a single song.

You should be fine with just the advice I gave you, though for various reasons .11s are recommendable, I guess it's not crucial. Worth a shot if all else fails. Personally, I would have .12s on it. But .10s shouldn't have tuning issues with your setup if you fix the nut.

By the way, by lubing the nut I mean graphite lube. You can use store bought graphite lube or just thoroughly rub a pencil in the slots.

Hey /mu/. Say im in the key of e minor. How do I make my my stuff sound like the different modes in the scale? For example, E minor (E aeolian) has the same notes as G major (G ionian). They are the same thing in different orders. What do I have to do to make them sound distinct? Sorry if im using the wrong terms, it's been a while since i took lessons. Thanks.
>>
>>66236646
thanks breh but any specific sites?
>>
>>66236680
ionno
>>
>>66236647

If you play the G Ionian scale over a chord progression rooted in G major, that makes it Ionian. If you play it over an Em rooted chord progression, that makes it Aeolian. Ionian and Aeolian simply means major and minor. When it comes to modes, it all comes down to the chord progression you play it over and how you phrase yourself.

Also, what a horribly cheesy guitar and guitar strap. I really hope thats not your actual guitar, if so just stop playing or kill yourself.
>>
>>66236088
A lot of annoying tuning issues, since you didn't file the nut or adjust your setup.
>>
>>66236647
I think I understand what you're asking.

Focus on the leading tones, which ultimately suggest major progressions. Have your downbeats land on major or minor-focused notes, like a half-cadence where the end note is a minor 3rd, or a perfect-authentic cadence with the leading voice moving from F# to G. But keep in mind that the key is suggested more through the progression rather than the specific notes.

I dropped out of music school, so this may be partially flawed info. Good luck.

This gets asked a lot, and I'm sorry.

I need an electric guitar. There is no particular sound I want to replicate, and I'm having a lot of trouble actually narrowing down the search as every time I try the selection seems to grow.

I've been playing for a few years, on and off. There is no particular sound I want to replicate, I'm not into metal, some bands I like: Sonic Youth, The Doors, The Gun Club. I like the look of Jazzmasters & Jaguars most.

My price limit is about US$700. I'm most scared of getting a 'gimmick' guitar that won't last and be reliable.

Any input is appreciated, thank you

Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy a Japanese or higher-end Mexican Stratocaster. it's a classic tool that every guitarist should have in their possession. as someone who has been playing over half their life, I'm glad I started on a Strat and I wouldn't recomment Fender offsets to a beginner.

I need a bit of help regarding powering my (planned) pedalboard, pic related.

Right now I only have a Ditto Looper with a Planet Waves 9V adapter. https://www.amazon.com/Planet-Waves-9V-Power-Adapter/dp/B00191WVF6/

Aside from the positive tip jack for the BMP, can I just buy a daisy chain - https://www.amazon.com/Snark-SA-2-Pedal-Daisy-Chain/dp/B0052745WK/ - connect it to the 9V adapter I already have, and connect the five jacks to the five pedals?

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, it's tough to make a recommendation for an all around guitar. That just makes me tempted to suggest the same guitar I started with. Avoiding that, I'd say an ash hawk. It's got a tremolo, which you may or may not be interested in, but you can disable it.

Not that anon but get an HSS pickup configuration and you'll be golden for what you want. Like a $500 fender or a $300 Ibanez

HSS pickups are a great idea. Another very powerful configuration is H-P90. HSS is a lot more common though.

Used MIA HSS Strat if you can find one, or higher end Japanese/Mexican HSS strat.
You will be golden and be able to play nearly anything.

tfw you dont play for a couple of days
tfw you pick up your guitar because you finally have time to play
tfw eyes close and you play everything you sucked at 10 times better
