I didn't know where to post this.

Once I heard a song but I don't know its name, it isn't 'obscure'

When I listened to the song it made me think about a cult. The song is slow and there's a very deep voice saying some things which I didn't understand. I read something about it being used before a band plays.

Thanks in advance..

>Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages
As usual, spectacular jazz performances from Sonny on the electric guitar, but Pharoah Sanders on sax and Elvin Jones on drums often steal the show, actually. Well, the drums are way high in the mix, and the bass is absurdly low. The sax is pretty low, but the playing compensates. The bass is so low that even amazing playing couldn't crack the mix.

"Promises Kept", the album opener, is a fantastic mostly-free jazz excursion. I love the mildly distracting smug cackling in the background. Assuming it's Sonny, he just sounds so self-satisfied with how the song is turning out (all all-according-to-plan like and everything) and for the life of me I can't fault him--the track does sound amazing. I'd probably be doing the same if a concept of my own design, seen to fruition, just floored me.

Subsequent tracks are much more structured, and play to the theme more than the first. "Who Does She Hope to Be?" and "Little Rock" are simple and lovely.

"As We Used to Sing" has one of the coolest themes, a ringing chorus of electric guitar, bass, and sax, wailing in unison, before erupting into a searing Sonny solo that quickly devolves into atonal noise blasts worthy of an Arab on Radar record. A beautiful sax passage from Sanders follows. And as with pretty much every song on the album

"Many Mansions" (veiled commentary on materialism, I suppose) takes a much darker tone, bolstered by a sinister bass line, deep guitar tones, and clamorous by methodical drumming. The soaring sax line shines like a picturesque holy spotlight breaking through dark storm clouds, beautifully elevated above the chaos. The sax is gradually replaced by the most rip-roaring guitar solo on the entire album. The sounds Sonny produces here are simply otherwordly.

TOURNEY.jpg
177 KB, 2000x1272
The last track initially makes for an odd change of pace. The song opens with a free, primitive-sounding drum solo (ala Grachan Moncur's "Nomadic")--sticking to the membranophones (learned a new word today) of the drum kit--before bass, guitar, and sax accompaniment kick in. The drum never loses its primitive sound throughout the track, even as cymbal sounds splash the track toward the end.

Speaking of the drumming, it consistently overwhelms anything else on the album. Even though it's amazing drumming--absolutely stunning--it's just way too loud. Like, Jones produces enough noise for two drummers and then, on top of that, it's so high in the mix. The bass solos are nigh inaudible and the sax solos are smothered by any hi hat sounds. The guitar is the only instrument to break above the ferment.
>8/10

I knew this would be close, but it's really too close for comfort. If Yam and Tort could each rec an EP, that'd serve as a nice tie breaker.

>PERTURBATOR - The Uncanny Valley
>synthwave

This has a cool, hard hitting vibe that just radiates "darkness". Its a sound track to a ultra slick and overally violent 80's cyberpunk anime. Now, its all good but it tends to drags on for a bit. I was all in for the first half but once its starts digging into 40 mins mark, I started looking at my watch. Great listen but it really needs to trim the fat.

Also the cover has titties, possibly synth titties.

>"Sufjan Stevens" - Stalker
lol
If this really is Sufjan, which I doubt, it makes sense, not only that this is what he would have been making back in 1998 but that he'd throw it away when he found it years later. It's his first messing around's with Audacity and cheap gear. It's fucking terrible. Did I even need to say that? It's pretty charming, but past novelty (which, do to it being so short, it doesn't run out of while it's playing) there's very, very little here. Of course there isn't. There's not supposed to be. It's sort of neat, honestly, if some nobody band put this out as a demo in the early 90s it would be cool, but I mean come on.

Favorite Track: Let's Fly to Another Planet
Least Favorite: Loneliness Is A Warm Bum (was expecting so much more from that title, holy shit)

and of course if it's fake it's going back in the trash and i'll try my hardest to never ever think of it ever again/10
>>
>>66223381
90's jazz is pretty wacky in general so I'll stick with my pick.
I also think it's one of the most phenomenal live jazz recordings available, and a pretty good summation of the 90's scene.

if the janitors come by and ask i'm a burly 56 year old

Young Thug - Barter 6 (2015)
>trap rap, southern hip hop

I mean, Young Thug certainly is an idiosyncratic rapper, but I can't really see what else would elevate this beyond being a very standard, yet servicable, trap tape. I guess there is a bigger emphasis on melody and rhythm compared to most other trap artists, especially with Thug's vocals, but the production here is just very inspired, so are the features as well (TWO Birdman feautures, jesus christ). And Thugger just isn't all too great of a rapper to my ears, even if he may be interesting to listen to with all his idiosyncracies. I'm not blown away at /all/, but hell, I'd give it another listen.

2.0-

Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity (1965)
>free jazz

I've always heard this described as the pinnacle of atonality in jazz, as the most out-there, batshit crazy, mindfucking free jazz album ever recorded. This isn't far off from the truth, but this is /so/ totally grounded in very conventional folk-style melodies, Ayler's sax playing, as loud and abrasive as it may be, still has a very tonal and melodic core, and I'm not sure how well I like the interplay between these more melodic sax compositions and the completely out-there performances on the bass and drums. Taken separately, everything here is amazing, all of the compositions are wonderful, as are the players. Taken as a whole, it's almost like a train that's still staying on the tracks, but it feels like a slight breeze could just turn the whole thing into a fucking mess. And that's really cool honestly, this album mostly rocks, even if it's very disjointed (that's the purpose though, innit?)

Vaporwave overall is much more based on sampling while synthwave relies on syhtnetizers (duh).
A good way to see the difference in the ideas and styles behind the genres though is ti see vaporwave as exxgerating the sound of the 80s pop while blending it with aesthetic elements of the 90s and 2000s while synthwave is more of a revival and expansion on new wave music.

spookd hard

something tells me I'm about to piss off some people really hard

Galaxie 500 - On Fire
I thought this was really average at first, then I 'got' it
The instrumentation is deceptively simple insofar as it deceives you into thinking that it's par for the course, but it is in fact incredibly layered, I just got sucked into the slow-turning vortex, it was pleasant...

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - No More Shall We Part
I think the aesthetic of artists like Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and to a lesser extent M. Gira has started to wane on me, you know the one, commanding masculine figure who frequents the jazz bars and has really fucked up relationships with people... that one
Nothing really blew me out of the water on this one here, there are standout tracks, God in the House and Love Letter to name them, and the lyricism was pretty consistently good, but it wasn't *that* good
I think I might need to take a break from it for a while, might take the Nick Cave one off the algorithm chart

98.12.28 Otokotachi no Wakare by Fishmans Translation:

http://pastebin.com/T4iUkFB3

Here it is! Took quite a while, but it's mostly done.

If you spot anything off, feel free to notify me and I'll change it.

A few things worth noting order of appearance:
>The "SATO" exchange is pretty funny on Oh! Slime when listening to it now
>Literally no one knows what the fuck is said at the end of Oh! Slime, but a pretty good guess is there
>The speaking at the end of なんてったの (third track) are pretty pointless, EXCEPT for the fact Shinji says "We hope to do live shows next year as well as the following year", which is pretty peculiar given the circumstances of this album...
>The lyrics to Thank You...uh...
>The lyrics to 幸せ者 and 頼りない天使 (5th and 6th track, respectively) remind me of something Morrissey would write, honestly.
>While the banter on the third track is pretty pointless, the one on ひこうき(7th track) is REALLY interesting. Would definitely recommend you read through that.
>Fuck, man, this album is depressing but some of these tracks' lyrics made me feel more than I thought. Would recommend just skimming some of this if you have mild interest in the subject.
>Would appreciate feedback on the format, specifically the Literal vs. Stylized translations, both of which I think are important to an extent, but wouldn't be opposed to omitting either if need be.

And that's all! Feel free to reply with any mistakes you see or corrections you might have. Hope someone finds some use out of this as I have :D

New BBNG came out today.

Sounds fucking amazing. Really open and large sounding in comparison to the dark and claustrophobic feelings they invoke on their earlier stuff.

Incredibly broad in scope, experimenting with minimalism, motown, soul, modern ny large scale jazz, classic ballads. Really impressed in general, definitely up there with AOTY so far.

Shit comes out tomorrow but have a link

>Half Japanese - 1/2 Gentlemen / Not Beasts
A missing link between the genera Beefheart and Residents (the metaphor also serendipitously works to describe their primitive aesthetic), recorded post-either, '77-79. As it turns out Caroliner and Royal Trux weren't so god damn special as I thought! They were just adding layers of complexity to the Half Japanese aesthetic, although the derision is perhaps unwarranted, since neither really water it down any, just built off it. (Not that Half Japanese are shining examples of originality or anything, about half the songs here are shit-to-shoddy covers of their favorite contemporary heroes: Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Modern Lovers, Iggy Pop, MC5, etc. [they even throw in a terrible but instantly recognizable cover of "College Psychology on Love").

Two hours of insanity ensues. Helter skelter hokey dorky, crusty n' musty, melodies n' rhythms stop-start skittish n' scattered, and let's not forget demented through and through. This surely must be the underworld's surest answer yet to Bang's illusory 'Carburator Dung'. At least that I've ever heard, and if this record is any indicator, there will always be someone out there making even more fucked up music.

TOURNEY.jpg

And what's perhaps most interesting to me as an active (wew) listener is how ruthless they are in their pursuit of their primitive noise goals. Traditional electric instrumentation, electronics, tape manipulation and maybe even studio trickery abound, they use everything they can to build their desired sound. A commendable effort, regardless of execution. It's also entirely possible that I'm talking out my ass and these guys are just unprecedentedly lazy. Lending credibility to this theory is Occam's razor and more materially, Wikipedia--one half of the band, Jad Fair, 30 years later apparently still can't play guitar. On the second version of "Ann Arbor, MI" you can even clearly hear him say, "Aw jeez, I hope this thing's in tune" and "Does this sound right to you?" before striking a few painfully detuned strings. Farther away someone responds, "Yeah sounds fine," followed by stifled giddy laughter.

So this has you questioning: So yeah yeah it's fucked, but is it good? Sure, rawer noise rock (has to be still identifiable as rock, so Destroy All Monsters can fuck off) might as well come riding a unicorn. Sure you've listed off comparisons to all the Scaruffian underground greats. Sure, but is it good? Is it an enjoyable listen?

Eh, maybe. But it is fun I guess. They seem to really hit their stride on the more rocking tracks like "10th Avenue Freezout", "Tangled Up in Blue", "Bogue Millionaires / Cool Millionaires", or "Funky Broadway Melody" and minimal synth and noise tracks like "Du Du Du / Du Du Du" and "T / T / T / T / T / T". Both 20 minute full live performance tracks are pretty great too. Honestly not all is worthwhile, but enough is scattered throughout to make the whole worthwhile. Trying to listen to the whole shebang in one sitting is pretty exhausting, though.

I suspect I might appreciate this even more after listening to their apparently more focused later releases.

Swans - To be Kind
I didn't dislike this album, but nothing on it really blew me away either. There were some nice guitar riffs and i liked the slow repetitious building. I also really like when there would be a quiet passage playing and then out of nowhere it would turn super loud. The lyrics were also good, but not great. One thing i can say about it is that it did not feel like i was listening to a 2 hour album so maybe it will take repeated listens to fully digest it. I might have fallen asleep for a bit while listening to it last night, but i'm not sure. blue triangle/10

TBK (and Swans in general) definitely a grower. If anything, my initial reaction was just like yours. Though Bring the Sun might never click with me, a majority of that I've come to love

I just heard a 48 second EP.

Insect Warfare / The Kill split
>grindcore

this shit is absolutely fucking bananas. they actually made cassettes of this. imagine the time it takes to walk over to your cassettes, pick this out, put it in, and press play. you turn around to have a seat and enjoy it, and before your ass hits the chair, Insect Warfare is already over. you then have 30 seconds of The Kill.
THE END.

but fuck, it's so GOOD. talk about relisten potential. i'd be flippin' that tape all DAY.
IW are absolutely on top of their game- a 10/10 performance if there ever was one. The masters just popped up to remind everyone who's in charge of grind.
The Kill definitely deserve to be on a split with IW- this EP was my introduction to them, and I am compelled. a really tremendous grind band, who, like Insect Warfare, really know the value in NEVER SLOWING THE FUCK DOWN. Granted, I only heard 30 seconds of this band, but that's ages in GrindTime, and I got a very strong impression that this group might be the best grind act apart from IW.

So, the score. This might confuse some of y'all- but barring the ludicrously short runtime (which is just a part of what makes grindcore so good anyway), this is a perfect album. I've listened to it like 13 times since I started writing this review. Besides, in this hectic, workaday world, who has time to listen to a 2+ hour album that ultimately goes nowhere (i'm looking at you, Swans)?
You put on a record like this, you know immediately whether you like it or not, and if you choose not to turn it off (i.e. test your reflex speed), you're probably gonna hit play again. I don't think i've ever listened to an album 13 times in a row (now more like 20), and i'm loving it. Thanks, The Kill. Thanks, Insect Warfare.

5/5, 10/10, whatever man.

try it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJNBaczhjzY&list=PLr3ViTcgePdjrOekezkkEFGBheMMVdMM_&index=1

Yeah, this is just about as fucking unbelievably dope as you all made it out to be. I'm not even sure what this music /is/, it's like guitar solo music from another fucking dimension. A cheesy as sin drum machine (it's not even a drum machine, it's the drum machine on a Casio keyboard, lovingly depicted on the cover like the rock to the music that it is) anchors every track, which almost makes me yearn for a live drummer but at the same time this music wouldn't be the same without the drum machine. Just face-melting stuff, it may get repetitive at times but this stuff manages to be incredibly engaging and FUN as hell for 50 minutes without barely changing at all.

3.5-

>Silent Hill: Original Soundtrack
Aren't all soundtracks just supposed to be watered down classical/piano + string pieces/chiptune? Since when was it allowed that you can make a soundtrack primarily consisting of Dark Ambient, Industrial, Noise, Trip Hop, and Ritual Ambient? Is this allowed? Do I have to call the music police? HAMPUS. GET IN HERE. Seriously though, this was really surprising. I know this is a horror game and all (I probably need to play these) but this kinda floored me. With over an hour of run time, it could've used some variation, but extremely compelling pieces such as "DIE" or "KILLED BY DEATH" are always fun to read. If you want a really unique Industrial album, please don't stray away from this.
8

>Silent Hill 2: Original Soundtrack
Doesn't have colossal industrial atmosphere of its predecessor, but that's not what sells this. Instead, this has bits and pieces of similarities to the first game's soundtrack, but also contains a lot of alt rock, trip hop, and more contemporary pieces which make for a really compelling experience. Tracks like "The Reverse Will", "True", and "Alone in the Town" don't have a punch in the gut attitude like that other album, but a much more subtle, dark, ominous feel that is so tangible you can make juice from it. Best vidya soundtrack rivaling Katamari, if not slightly better.

Wow look at that, listening to more than one album a week.

>Death Grips - Exmilitary
This is my first time hearing anything Death Grips has done and i really enjoyed it. I had heard about MC Ride's crazy vocal delivery and that is definitely in full force on this album. What i didn't expect though was how creative and fun the beats were. It was like every song was doing something different and it really added to the schizophrenic vibe the album has. The whole album is basically yelling at you and i would have maybe liked to see a few softer moments, but then i guess that's what they are good at. green diamond/10
