First, strings assuming you're playing real shit, next amp... Though depending on what you're playing maybe not. If you are only playing cleans, many cheap solid state amps will do the job well enough that your pickups will have a larger effect. Anyways, you don't need that good gear to gig, hence why so many musicians have "beater" guitars and amps.

ES-175 has a shorter scale length so the strings have less tension compared to an L5, that translates to a looser feel that you may or may not like. Makes things like legato easier. If you've ever played a Les Paul or ES-335 the neck basically has the same feeling. I definitely prefer a 25.5" scale on Archtops though, I think it gives the strings more tension and a percussive feel that for me is a good thing in Archtops.

I play guitars with both scale lengths though, it's not something you really think of when you're playing but it is noticeably different.

Deans are good guitars. You can get one reasonably low priced and better quality than a similarly priced strat. Don't listen to the "hurr durr it's pointy" or "hurr durr dave mustaine" shit. Read reviews from people that actually touched one.

>>
>>66119089
If one sounded better than the others they wouldn't have put 3 pickups in. The options are there because they might suit different musical contexts better, in the same way dynamics and playing styles suit different parts of different songs better. Having different pickup options is like having different instruments in an orchestra. One doesn't necessarily sound better but each pickup position will have a different feeling to it.

Way Huge stuff in general is pretty good on bass, I've had a few of their pedals after a buddy of mine got me to try some of their stuff. Also I had the deluxe bass muff, it's also really good. I swapped it out for the Swollen Pickle but I still would say the deluxe was great for the blend feature and the built in noise gate
>>
>>66122294
I have, only briefly and not through my rig, though. I've also heard it being played it person. It is a great basic tremolo.

By the way, 99% of the time you can't really play or hear pedals (and sometimes not even amps or guitars) in person and have to rely on YouTube clips. If a pedal has enough demos/reviews, if you listen to all of them and if you know what to look with the right perspective, after a while it's pretty easy to identify how it's going to sound in real life and through your rig just based on YouTube videos.

For a long time I made the mistake of relying on single demos (especially PGS ones) for pedal purchases and kept getting disappointed with some of them. After a while I stopped buying pedals unless I could find demos from multiple sources and that solved the problem. I pretty much know what to expect in every single pedal I buy now because I analyze multiple demos. This is also why smart companies (EQD, Walrus, JHS, for example) always have several different channels making demos of the same pedal for them right upon release.

For a professional who only plays the neck pickup with the volume and tone maxed out. The hole still on the side of the guitar indicates that it was a stock tele that was modded to have the input jack on the front, which must work better for her.

It also gives her image (you know, visual identity and looks are something important for actual performing artists) a more unique/different look. The very proof that this works at least to some extent is that you noticed and commented on it, otherwise you'd have more likely ignored her (or more easily forgotten about her). Her 'handicapped' guitar just made you pay attention to her and if you ever see her again on TV or the internet, you will remember that guitar and make the association. At the very least this is great artist marketing.

So I bought a guitar months ago and now that I have some free time I want to start learning. I'm on break at the moment so can just practice all day.

However I find that after about an hour or two my fingers get sore because I'm a delicate little snowflake.

Should I tough it out and keep practicing anyway or is it better to let them rest and recover? And how long will it take for my fingers to toughen up so this isn't such an issue?
>>
>>66122825
>Should I tough it out and keep practicing anyway
No, the whole "fight through the pain" is a movie trope.

If it hurts, you're either doing it wrong or your body can't handle it anymore (and it's most likely the latter). Pushing it further is just asking for more serious long term injury.

Some light pain to moderate discomfort is normal when starting out. Outright pain that keeps it hard for you to focus and keep going is definitely a no-no. Stop when it gets to that point and let it rest. Slow and steady is always the best way.

Just got a orange micro dark and the distortion has a weird grainy sound to the top of it and I'm not sure what might be causing it, I changed the tube in it recently so it shouldn't be a bad tube. Anyone have any experience with this sort of problem? The distortion almost sound like it's clipping in my 4x12.

Yes. Not even Kevin wants one any more.
>>

>The distortion almost sound like it's clipping in my 4x12
Distortion is clipping of the signal by definition, farmboy.
>>
>>66122975
Truth. What I mean is that it sounds scratchy, but different than the amp's actual distortion.
>>
>>66123013
Have you tested on another cab? Are you sure that's not how the amp is supposed to sound?

It's a hybrid amp with a solid state power amp, after all.
>>
>>66123041
I unfortunately don't have another cab to test things out on, but I ran the amp through some headphones and the same sound happened. I'm starting to think that the tube I just swapped into it is bad. Gonna try testing the tube that came with the amp to see if theirs a difference.

>>66123087
Very unlikely it's the tube if you already tested two.

Also, tubes don't drastically change the sound like that. They can introduce noise (mostly due to microphonic tubes), make your signal stutter or slightly alter the frequency response of the amp, but as long as the tube isn't dying or microphonic (hell, even if it was), you shouldn't be hearing too much difference from a good tube.

top switch - neck pickup
bottom switch - bridge pickup

middle position - no signal from pickup
top position - in phase
bottom position - out of phase

and they can be blended for more tonal variety

On the other hand, I started playing again after a ten year hiatus and had no problems at all with pain, my fingers just calloused up within a week.

for only 300 though, thats the cut off for quality, dont dip below 300 bucks for a guitar.

test guitars out before you buy, you dont want to take someones "advice" here and end up with a guitar that has a neck you dont like/sound you dont like/feel you dont like etc

Spend 300 on an electric guitar. Get an amp when you get another 300. It might suck with no amp but you'll be happy if you get the 300$ guitar. Also everyone around you will be happy you could play a little bit before they had to hear you thru an amp. If you get an acoustic the only benefit it's going to have to a beginner is it's louder without an amp. A lot of your mistakes will be more evident, which is good because it will be more clear you're making them so you can correct them. But more likely it will just frustrate you.

I play bass in a starting band and we are preparing for our first small gigs. I am in the marked for a new bass amplifier and i have some questions.

As i said i need it for small (pub) gigs. it needs to be able to compete with a 40 watts tube guitar amp (Marshall DSL40C).
I have a budget up to €1000 but i don't need it to be overkill. Im fine with spending less.
We play rock.

Some questions
>What wattage do i need?
>2/4x10 or 1x15?
>Should i go for half-stack or a combo?
Is it a good idea to buy a half-stack now and later upgrade to a full stack, and should i take this into consideration when buying the head?
>Any general or specific recommendations are welcome.

So far i have been looking at;
>Ampeg BA-115 V2 / BA-210 V2 (combo)
>Gallien Krueger MB210-I I/ MB212-II / MB115-II (combo)
>Fender Rumble (both combo and stack)
>Ampeg portaflex 1x5 4x10 and 2x10 (cabins) kind of interested in the flip-top variant.
Ampeg PF-350/500 (head)

The only reason I'd get "vintage" high end of either of these is because they're cheaper yet better. Like the RG550.

>>66126926
If you know what you're doing, you can make an RG8 sound like a telecaster. Just add a bass contour, cut off most of the bass and boost the highs and that's it, you've got the obnoxious twangy tone everyone wants.

This. However Dean is/was infamous for the lack of QC on their cheaper guitars. Also some of their signatures are really good, like the RC7X. It's not too expensive, the neck is paper-thin, the neck joint is sculpted for a full access to the higher frets on the whole 7 strings, the action is low as fuck, you have a floyd rose and it's also available in 6 and 8-string versions. The only drawbacks are the EMGs (if you don't like them), and the lack of a tone knob and versatility, but honestly you don't buy stuff like that to play jazz or blues.

Who here is buying a Tyler/Anderson/Suhr/Sadowsky/FenderCS that street sells for over $4,500?

Anybody?

I've done the web search thing for all of them, what the fuck happened? I've also done the dollar analysis and inflation thing online, too. It doesn't add up.

I'm not talking about anything exotic or custom either, these are all bolt-on strat styles with an alder or similar body, a figured maple top is even more!

I really want to know if anybody is buying these, not judging, just curious. How many gigs/sessions do you have to do to pay-off this guitar?

According to the inflation calculator online, an item costing $1,850 in 1998 is equal to $2,715 in 2016. I wouldn't think twice about paying that for a custom "whatever," but not $4,500 plus... same thing for an amp head. 4k for a plexi clone? Don't be ridiculous. look into these cabs
http://www.edenamps.com/cabinets.html

i agree with the markbass little mark 3, such a strong little bass head

i would suggest going solid state, i love tubes but they are a big pain to be carrying around especially with such heavy weight and getting the tubes warm hours before the gig could get tiresome. go ss and just plug in, turn on and play out some killer tunes.

2x12 is perfect for your mid range sound, i love it when paired with a 1x15 for the low end but in the end it really boils down what type of music you're going to play. the 4x10 has a nice balanced sound. i've seen people with two 1x15s and it sounded dope for that style of music. fender's rumble cabs are light as fuck and they sound killer. the ruble is their starting line so if you ever need them for a larger gig, you would need a good di box to raise the sound through the front of house pa system. you can go with the fender baseman neo cabs, they're a little bit more pricy but very worth the cash. just check your ohms before you do anything.

good luck with your new band anon

>Sound and feel is top notch as you would expect from Martin but the full HPL body has me curious as to how it will hold up over the next 20 years or so.

You paid $600 for a guitar made completely of plywood and glue, congrats.

or any short scale bass. i'm not the biggest j styled pickup fan to begin with but if you're down to play like geddy lee go with the jazz. they're a solid bass and are more flexible in their tone compared to the p bass since the p can only get one good tone. but that p bass has THAT tone and its a staple in music and that's all it needs to do to get the job done.

I haven't played regularly in years, just sort of mess around now, record any cool riffs I put together.
