Before the communists took over in 1944, the country was largely rural. Such music was performed in every village, and each region had its specific rhythm, dialect, dressing traditions and traditions as a whole. In the 50s and 60s the country was industrialized, which lead to growing of the population in the cities. I haven't seen any old people sing like that in an ordinary situation. There are various ensembles, which perform the traditional dances and sing the songs, which were recorded in the 19th and 20th century, but they are rehearsed, and in a sense they are not authentic. Sadly, I have to admit I haven't traveled a lot and I haven't visited less populated areas, but I'm pretty sure if I travel to the Rhodope mountains in the South I'll come upon a village where these traditions are still alive.
