idk there was this trend in the 90s specifically after grunge was over where it seemed like the only rock songs that got popular were ones with self-depreciating or really sad lyrics, and usually sad in a straight forward, easy to decipher way. I guess if that many people are going to hear your music, you don't want them making wild guesses about what it's actually about, and at that point rock music was already associated with depression and suicide. I'm glad that era is over
