The Seer, Replica, Sun Bat Her, To Pimp a Butterfly, MBDTF, Carrie & Lowell all come to mind.
I don't think I'd say something that just came out this year could be considered a classic yet.

It was a good album but it hasn't been discussed, praised, and dissected the same way the other "/mu/core" albums have. There were some threads when it came out but it's not the center of attention like The Glowing Man is. Just because you really like it doesn't make it a classic.
>>
>>65867214
You do realize that I love that album right?
>>
>>65867242
Instant Classic
1.) Referring to something being "extravagantly awesome".
2.) The nickname of the greatest, most charismatic professional wrestler in recent memory, TNA Wrestling's Christian Cage.
1.) Dude, Terminator 2 was an Instant Classic!
2.) "The Instant Classic" Christian Cage is a two-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion!

seriously though.

this album is the standard that all "neo-Kanye" albums are held. It's the album that cemented his legacy in the pop culture consciousness. this is the album that critics can't stop raving about, even 6 years after it's release.

this is definitive Kanye, and definitely a definitive classic of this generation

RYM has it at like what a 3.85 or something? Pretty fair even tho its like a 3 or 3.5 for me

TKOL is 3.3 even tho it's their best, but hey most radiohead fans are massive plebs

Not strictly true. It's very difficult to make something that is both experimental AND good. But radiohead isn't actually experimental. I'm willing to grant you that it's good pop music though. I just categorically don't listen to much pop music though.

for some reason I suspected that the link would have a "fun with a delay pedal" feel to it.

here's what I hear:

1 tone
pentatonic tones over top
phoenix + joy division

little to no development, increases in intensity, but literally ONE TONE. and just nice sounding pentatonic chiming tones over top.

people don't give credit to the fact that "pop" music IMO seeks to consolidate or condense the most "novel" possible changes or melodies in an isolated way. to me "Pop" in itself can be as "revolutionary" as so-called "experimental" music.

but further than this, consider that music is art, and art is choice.

is just so happens that the "inventions" or novel melodies that radiohead employs are good "choices" to me much in the same way a museum curates an exhibition. a good artist is one who is discerning in what they will or won't release.

the glenn branca sounds to me literally like a "jam" and less composed. its somewhat anti-climactic in my mind. pop music however is the "tightest" music imaginable in that the focus is heavily on a single melodic line.....one that if you want to write something "original" needs elegantly and cleverly imposed
>>
>>65872983
>the glenn branca sounds to me literally like a "jam" and less composed
Making jams that sound really good is more difficult than composing a song. Why do you think the top jazz musicians are so insanely good at their instruments? Improvisation is fucking hard, people don't give enough credit to that. Glen Branca isn't improve anyway, but still, don't diss jams and improve, even some of the best trained classical pianists aren't good at improvisation.

right but people jam when they want to make up a song. that's what I mean about pop "distilling" only the best ideas.

you jam for an hour, and you reduce that to 10 minutes of really good ideas
>>
>>65872983
>To me "Pop" in itself can be as "revolutionary" as so-called "experimental" music.

I don't agree. Pop music can be influential but I don't think it can escape limiting effects of commercial interests to truly be "revolutionary". It's always going to be part of the establishment if not simply because of its definition as popular music. This isn't to say that music can't try to be both pop and experimental, like Arthur Russell for instance, but when I think of something being "revolutionary" it needs to overturn an established order which I think necessitates it being outside that order.

>the glenn branca sounds to me literally like a "jam" and less composed.
Clearly. His music is of course not caught up in being "tight". I doesn't need to have a climax.

I personally dislike a lot of music that I just think is too clean. There's something I've always preferred in live performances and improvizations. Pop is just largely too calculated for my tastes. When I want calculated music I go to either classical or electronic.

>It's always going to be part of the establishment if not simply because of its definition as popular music.

its strange to me that you consider it an impossibility that a large amount of people would recognize something new or novel and appreciate its revolutionary characteristics. take Nirvana for example, to say "revolutionary" is too vague. clearly, in terms of actual music they WEREN'T, but they were "culturally" relevant and new. they spawned something new in the culture. maybe there is a divide between culture and "music" itself that needs drawn

>Pop is just largely too calculated

it is calculated, but consider that when you refer to "a" song it is because this song is "unique" enough to be "that" song and not another song. I like the idea of making a song that is recognized as itself. it stands alone and is almost cemented in peoples heads. It then proliferates, like the beginning of beethoven's 5th becoming the cliche "dramatic" intro in a movie

I still don't know entirely what to think of improvisation. to relate it to writing, sometimes I think that I could think for 5 hours, and make notes on my thoughts, but I always have to reduce these thoughts and "sift" through them for the best. so a good improviser can "speak" well and fluidly with his instrument, but its almost as if I hope that the ideas the improvisations yield will then be more concretely applied elsewhere

Strictly speaking, alot of what Glenn Branca went on to do was not actually improvisation. Most of it, maybe even the post I linked you is actually composed to have complex polyrhythms and borrows a lot from Schoenberg and the other serialists.

As for the "revolutionary" term. I just think that the sameness of most pop from a structural standpoint leads to an overall feeling of it being sanitized when compared to more experimental groups. I like mistakes, they remind me that a human is producing what I am listening to. It's probably why I like noise rock so much. I find dissonances as well to be really cathartic.

I know I'm being baited here but I gotta reply.

He made 2 albums known as the greatest albums of this generation. He has millions of fans out of knowhere.

If you know anything about Mandela, he was persecuted but beloved. By him saying the ghost of Mandela is with him, he wants to be backed by his supporters even if something bad fell on him.

Michael Jackson was adored after Thriller but the minute the child molestation shit happened he lost all of his supporters. "That nigga made Billie Jean you say he touched those kids?" is literally his way of asking how his downfall destroyed his reputation.

If shit hits the fan is you still a fan?

All that was was him asking "would I be backed like Mandela or martyred like Michael?"

The Tupac shit though I gotta agree that it drags on too much but it was pretty insightful into his ideology.

Genuine classics that are discussed in the same terms as, say, Illmatic, ITAOTS, Loveless etc, probably not many at all. I'd say:

MBDTF
TPAB and GKMC
Have One on Me
Benji
The Seer maybe

There are obviously hundreds of brilliant albums alongside those, but it's very very rare you are sure an album will be considered a "classic" so soon after release. TPAB is possibly the only album where I thought "this is going to go down as a classic" pretty much on 1st listen.

The Seer and To Be Kind will definitely be regarded as classics.

Death Grips will be too, regardless of what you think of them they made revolutionary music (either ExMilitary or The Money Store will be hailed as classics. NLDW will still be remembered for the album cover alone).

MBDTF will and Kendrick Lamar's last two albums will.

Blackstar will, given the fact that he died so close to its release and it was about his approaching demise.

A Moon Shaped Pool might be purely for the fact that it's Radiohead after a long time of having no Radiohead.

Tim Hecker (Virgins or Ravedeath)

My personal choice would be Kaputt by Destroyer

I think yes to all of these. There are a lot of great albums in this thread that I'm sure many of us will be listening to years from now, but /mu/ liking an album in no way means it will be classic. Classic albums withstand the test of time among the general people, not just /mu/, and typically have some kind of impact on culture. So like, even though I like most of the stuff >>65876373
