Hey man, do you know any link for a DVD rip of this concert
>>
>>65821625
House music started in chicago warehouses, hence the name. I'm pretty sure it has black and gay origins (doesn't everything?), but it spread super quickly. Techno is a derivative sort of thing (I think, don't quote me on that) but definitely from Detroit.

House music is not strictly the same as techno, but they aren't nearly as disparate as their fans would like you to believe. As far as I know, there are some average BPM differences and the only hard difference is house has a kick beat on every whole beat while techno is every half beat (or every other beat and every beat, respectively). There are of course lots of small stylistic differences.

House mainly goes for a dance vibe, and playing to stereotypes, usually is accompanied by some melody, vocal or otherwise. Techno is usually darker, more beat-focused, and much more textural. Both work to make sonic sculptures over their respective beat templates, but that might be giving them too much credit.

Glad to enjoyed Delroy Edwards btw

now THIS is interesting. If i could ask you what you would consider to be House's greatest contribution to the world of music and it's progression, what would you say that was? Namely, what do you feel you have benefited from listening to it? Do you even feel that it's greatest potential has been realised? (e.g. have artists pushed it to the utmost extremes it can go?)

Alright, review inc. I was short on time today/lazy this weekend, so these are pretty short. Some of them are even criminally short. I may elaborate on a few tomorrow.

>>Friday “”Reviews””

>J-Zbel - How I Made My Mom and Sis My Sexbot Slaves 7”
Probably the best thing about this is the title, but that is one of the best titles ever, so even though the music can’t live up to it, it’s still cool. It’s a beautiful mess of sweet techno, scattered breakbeats, chopped samples, and wavering synth washes.
>7/10

>J-Zbel - Hyena Sticks Head in Elephants Butt EP
Much of the same but not as concentrated and with some unnecessary trap and dubstep influences.
>5/10

>Minutemen - What Makes a Man Start Fires?
Excellent mix of hardcore punk and more sophisticated post-punk and noise rock. The lyrics range from comical to savage.
>7/10

>Ruth Garbus - Joule EP
Halfhearted, sweet, female-vocal indie pop/contemporary folk. Pleasant, but not particularly impressive.
>6/10

>>65822147

A Name Out Of Place PT. II (12_).jpg
444 KB, 1266x1275
>Tzusing - A Name Out of Place Pt. II
Another amazing release from the L.I.E.S. label, A Name Out of Place Pt. II contains the music super villains play to mind control the helpless citizens. The beats on every track just kill. Track two though, “Frankincense and Myrrh” has one of the hardest (and I often resist using that word) techno beats I have ever heard. Raw harsh noise passages puncture the track periodically. The air raid sirens at the end might be a bit corny, but they fit the atmosphere all too well.
>8/10

>Minutemen - Paranoid Time EP
>Minutemen - Joy EP
Pretty similar desu, but Paranoid Time is a bit thinner-sounding, and Joy far shorter and darker. Overall I narrowly enjoy Joy more, but they’re both interesting just as solid early works of the Minutemen.
>both get 6/10

>>Monday “Reviews”

>Minutemen - The Punch Line
More crass than their later more sophisticated releases and much more standard hardcore punk fare, although the general second half of the album sees a few more interesting tracks. New favorite album cover tho.
>6/10

>Tzusing - A Name Out of Place, Pt. I
Not really sure why Tzusing is making a series out of it, because this hardly sounds like part 2. This one’s just generic-ish techno but you can kind of get a handle on Tzusing’s style: heavy, distorted, noisy beats and pitch-shifting trickery.
>5/10

>The Last Forty Seconds - s/t
Decent to unremarkable screamo. A bit too one-note for my taste, and it's also an example of what happens when your band is comprised of a rhythm guitarist, rhythm bassist, stop-start vocalist, and drumming. The whole thing moves in lock step and loses some feeling.
>4/10

>The Last Forty Seconds / Sundowner - Split 7"
Well I figured I might as well finish off the Last Forty Seconds discography with their only other release, a split single shared with another screamo band called Sundowner.

Sundowner further highlights the weaknesses of Last Forty Seconds' sound, but I suppose each has their own strengths.
>4/10

>Lata Ramasar - The Greatest Name That Lives 7"
Traditional folk tunes ported to a minimal synth and disco framework with some wacked out singing

As far as execution goes, the single delivers two weird (in the sort of cheerfully demented 'outsider artist weird' sort of way) and catchy tracks. The title track is dedicated to her mother, which is pretty adorable, while the second seems to be a more straightforward dance-intentioned track. The whole thing is mad janky, but not for any lack of character.

I'd like to hear some more backstory about this, but it's apparently shrouded in mystery and original copies go for over $600 on discogs. It's unclear whether Lata Ramasar is from the Caribbean or India. Weirdly antipodal, right?
>6/10

>Bastro & Codeine - A L'ombre de Nouse / Produkt 7"
A single-track-each split single for Sub Pop of post rock and noise rock.

"A L'ombre de Nouse" is fairly straightforward: 4 and 1/2 min of haunting piano organ balladry incorporating bits of musique concrete or drumming (whichever is producing a dull heart beat in the background) and dreary french nearly-spoken singing.

Codeine's track is a weird medley of lots of different shit.

It starts off with a furious hardcore punk excursion, hitting a dead stop before resuming with a louder, noisier riff on the same theme. Then slowcore for a minute. Then back to punk, but a bit artsier, for another minute before a fade out, followed by a fade in to a slightly longer slowcore bit. Fade. A different slowcore bit? Much more experimental, with twangy slinky guitars and what sounds like simple hand drumming.

What a ride, but overall not that much worth hearing.

DRIVE SAFE FISHMANS!
>>
>American Music Club - United Kingdom
While I'm on a Scaruffi-core roll with Minutemen, might as well give the rest of the AMC discography a shot.

Mark Eitzel's breathy, kind of whiny, and very baritone vocals take center stage for most everything this band has ever done, but it's worth noting that the rest of the band never slacks off. Lots of interesting alt country on here, and it’s just as worth a listen as their first album is.
>7/10

>Celina y Reutilio - A Santa Barbara
Compositions based on Cuban folksongs. Pretty stuff, and fantastic singing.
>7/10

And finally

>Reinbert de Leeuw - Erik Satie: Gnossiennes; GymnopÈdies; Ogives; Trois arabandes; Petite ouverture ‡ danser
Wow now I want to kill myself. Or at least drown myself in wine as I cry in a ball in front of the wood stove. Eminently potent and superbly simple, these pieces can make you hopeful and depressed like no other. Wow.

Outsider house is pretty broad though, and I wouldn't necessarily call it a subgenera of deep house. I also wouldn't get your hopes up too high, but the highly-rated releases on RYM are indeed very worth it. As you can see from my reviews, I was a huge fan of that Tzusing EP

Radiohead - In Rainbows (1st impressions)
This started out very strong (was picturing giving it an 8+) until about the 4th or 5th track. I feel it relies too much on repetitive hooks and it feels too perfect and clean for my likeness. Lyrics aren't bad but nothing to write home about.

Aphex Twin - SAW '85-'92
Yeah I mean, it's good, but the songs quite often drag for far too long, enough to outstay their welcome
IMO Druqks is a way better album, it's more dynamic
I see this being really good study music, it's something I will return to

United States of America - United States of America
It's a serviceable psych-rock album
good to hear the female vocals, added some nice texture to the vocals
Don't really have much to say about this one, must've knocked peoples faces off in the late 60s

Didn't like this as much as the other "essentials" of krautrock (Can and Faust), because there wasn't the same variance in sounds and timbres, and I missed that interesting mix of lightheartedness and intellectualism that the others had.
That being said, I still liked this album, and it worked really well as ambient music to me at quite a lot of moments. I think this is because of how it works as quite minimal music, with lots of repetition in both percussive and melodic instruments, making many stretches of music that work as interaction between spacey, pulsing rhythms of music.

My favourite piece was the last one Jahresüberblick, which is broken into three movements. The vocal performance at the end was interesting, one of those many singers you find in music who are good at being bad.

The name of house music comes from a particular nightclub called the Warehouse, not from being developed in warehouses. There were also other nightclubs involved, where the primary patrons were gay, black and latinos. It developed naturally from disco, Kraftwerk and YMO. It differed from contemporary electronic musics (disco) in that the focus was on the simple 4/4 beat, rather than melody, and in that it was more minimalistic. Key elements of house music includes a shitload of hi-hat and claps or snares on the second and fourth beat to produce a "syncopated disco" feel. Important early house DJs are Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. The labels Trax and DJ International helped popularise house music.

Techno developed alongside house music and had even more focus on percussion than house music, which still used elements of melody in vocal samples and such. Syncopation is often used more than it is in house music. The genre of Detroit techno was founded by the "Belleville Four" (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, and Eddie Fowlkes). Metroplex, Transmat and KMS were important labels in the popularisation of techno.
>>
>>65822064
House's greatest contribution to the world of music is probably the push for the DJ's importance in nightclubs, as a musician rather than someone who just flips discs. House is in an awkward position that anything that tends to stray too far from the norm will be labeled as techno instead.

Sorry, been gone for a few days.

>Einstürzende Neubauten - Halber Mensch
I downloaded this like 3 years ago and never really came around to listen to it. I learnt today that this was a huge mistake. This was fucking awesome. I love the "cold" sounding instrumentation. Those clear and hard hitting drums. It gets very noisy at parts. And then it end with a super "warm" feeling track with a beautiful melody in the background. I'm regretting so much that I haven't listend to this masterpiece earlier.

>Ricardo Villalobos - Fizheuer Zieheuer
This was nice. I've listend to this a few times the past few days. Very minimalistic and relaxing. The first track was super unique to me with the horns throughout, but after a while it got maybe a little too repetetive for me. It's perfect in the background while doing something else, like editing some photos or while walking around the city. But it's not something I start just for the music while doing nothing else to be honest.

Ween - Pure Guava
I know this is supposed to be all fun and whimsicle, and there are some good tracks here (like The Stallion and Don't Get 2 Close) but the majority of it is just fart jokes and pitched rock (which isn't really a good idea here)
