It's been a while.

""

Best to worst.

>Wire – 154
Love this band, and I love the post-punk vibe they attached to almost flawlessly, but there’s like three or four tracks that are whatever. Their most abstract release I’ve heard by far, and probably my favorite by them. Hard for me not to enjoy this immensely.
8

>Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. - Electric Heavyland
ew
7

>Boris - New Album
Was promised something terrible, got a good j-rock album and a pretty mediocre Boris album. When you’re as out there as Boris occasionally is, there aren’t many ways to alienate your fan base other than something like this. Loved the shoegaze influence and some of the pop melodies, but some here were just tasteless. Wata’s voice suits this genre infinitely more than Takeshi’s. I imagine the poor rating is reactionary and not judging this album as its own work, though I do get the hatred.
6

>森田童子 - A Boy ア・ボーイ
k.
6

>神聖かまってちゃん - つまんね
I honestly don’t think an album has pissed me off in a while, goddamn. I know noise pop isn’t everyone’s thing, because it’s basically just power pop with an assumingly less accessible vibe, but I honestly don’t mind. This thing was powerful, chaotic, and contained a lot of freaking catchy riffs. But the mixing and the vocals were just atrocious in most of this. It’s hard to always catch it, but there’s a LOT going on here. Two or more guitars, vocals, horns, keyboards, and I thought I heard some occasional strings. However, a lot of these instruments are hard to pick up and really appreciate with the wall of sound approach to recording, where the guitar and bass just drown the rest of the instruments out of the mix, making listening occasionally a chore. And while I honestly didn’t mind any of the screaming and emotional singing, the fact that they’re so repetitive made it get old pretty fast on a lot of tracks. Still, if noise pop is your thing, give this a freaking shot.

>Arthur Russell - World of Echo
I don’t even know why I disliked this at all. Maybe I just don’t like Russell’s minimal approach to pop music, but I enjoyed “Another Thought” a lot. I honestly found the sparseness of some parts really satisfying and calming, though it begged for variation, and I didn’t think it was mixed as properly as “Another Thought”.
5

>Sun City Girls - Torch of the Mystics
Man I’m gonna get some shit for this.
It’s not even that bad, it’s just bland insanity imo with very little instrumentation though, I do enjoy the variation. Space Prophet Dogon, Blue Mamba, and Radar 1941 were among my favorites, but it’s not as mind blowing as I was promised. Can’t wait for
>UM YOU DIDN’T ENJOY MY ALBUM?????????????? DID U EVEN LISTEN 99999999999999 TIMES FUK UUU!!!
4

>ヤン富田 - Music for Astro Age
Look at those fucking genres:
>Space Age Pop, Experimental, Avant-Garde Jazz, Ambient Dub, Plunderphonics, Sound Collage, Field Recordings
Like, holy heck. This dude is an eccentric genius and I can’t help to appreciate his prowess. He’s the guy behind the Doopees if you didn’t know. Anyways, while I barely enjoyed this at all and think the steel drums are the second most annoying instrument ever, I would never suggest someone pass on this. If you enjoyed Doopee time to any extent, give this a shot.

I started this chart today and decided to listen to Shahen Shah and Varech first, simply because those were the first to download.

Shahen Shah I’ve already heard of, since I listened to Devotional Songs a while ago and noticed that it seemed to be the generally preferred Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan album. I’ll agree with rym and also say it’s significantly better than Devotional Songs. I’ve found myself tending towards traditional releases that have shorter run times, but Shahen Shah is an exception for sure. It’s because of the tempo based song structure, which is similar to those in “Shamans of the Eastern Seaboard” while sounding much different. I enjoyed it a lot, I’ll probably have to give it a few more listens until deciding on my rating, but it seems to be a 7.5 now. Thanks anon who recced this.

Varech was the second album, recced by s. I see why he would like it so much, but I can’t get myself to enjoy it past surface level listening. It seems to lose focus near the middle, specifically “Terre Basse,” which I found unenjoyable. “Mr Donald Cerise” manages to slightly redeem, but yea it’s basically not doing much for me outside of like 4 songs. I didn’t dislike it though, it’ll be a 5.5 for now.

Which next?

Yeah. It's the best Fishmans songs played better live, including a better version of Long Season. Even if you don't like the songs, you'll probably be blown away at the recording quality, which is pretty impeccable for a live album.

Did you enjoy Long Season to any extent? I'd recommend listening to one of their other albums first, or at least listening to a few of their hit singles first, but it's not really necessary. If you'd enjoy it at all in context of that music you would so out of context as well.

back after a week or so of being busy as fuck and lazy to write shit about the stuff i've been listening to

listened to a few random projects in addition to tourney and chart shit, plus a lot of listening to sondre lerche and kanye west over and over

anyway, a week late, round 2 match 2: za fish vs. buen amigo rodriguez

>m. sage - rife w/ typo
pretty nice laid-back sample-loopage. reminds me somewhat of flying lotus but a lot less attention-grabbing and a bit more relaxing. mix in a bit of A E S T H E T I C and you get something that sounds like it could be playing in a far-future dystopian lounge. pretty nice.

>Fishmans - 98.12.28 男達の別れ
dear jesus this is fucking BRILLIANT. i listened to this maybe 4-5 times in the span of two days, and i loved each listen more than the last. definitely fishmans at their best. all of the steadiness, windingness, melody, and emotion that makes fishmans fucking amazing without any of the boredom that may plague its low points. plus, the version of long season on here is just beautiful beyond words. gonna be spinning this regularly for a long time to come.

fish wins this round! please give me your next rec soon! thank you to mabuting kaibigan rodriguez for participating!

For a while I thought about putting all the wisdom fusion jazz gave me to good use and try to listen to stuff I like but can't tell why.
I found myself on a dead-end after trying to put my finger on what I like with vangelis' Beaubourg, and concluded it was not a good idea.
So instead I'll do another band-marathon with the Legendary Pink Dots, because I can.

I am not all that sure what to make of it.
Between the bare-bones instrumentation, occasionnal sampling, strange and almost childish singing with demented lyrics, this whole damn thing is probably working on a certain level that I did not exactly see.
It's like Current 93 all over again.

Residents - Not Availiable
Yeah I mean, it's fine, but it didn't really knock my socks off like Meet the Residents and Eskimo did
It's definitely the most conventional I've heard them play, but I'm not about to criticize them for that
some of it got a bit annoying as well, like the mid section vocals in part 2
eh, it's fine

Townes Van Zandt - Townes Van Zandt
This surprised me, I was prepping to pan the shit out of this because I assumed that because it was country it'd be shit and just another sad country man singing about his sad sad problems, I was wrong
On the contrary, this album has lyrics and song structure to match Dylan at his best, although I would like to hear this with less polish
The lyrics paint a clear mental picture, his voice is prominent and actually quite smooth
I'm intrigued, want to hear more

Hi /blog/
My posting here and my rating on rym has slowed down in the past few days because I'm absolutely exhausted. But I managed to find an album I've enjoyed.
>Van Morrison –Astral Weeks
>Strong 7
The main thing I'm not hugely keen on is the sudden changes in dynamics in Van Morrison's voice. They may be more emotional to some, but they come across as quite harsh and melodramatic to me –not all the time, though.
I do like the meandering, wandering feel of the tracks. It feels like he's staring up at a sky and speaking of romantic reminiscences or something. The fact that he doesn't have to rely on really poppy/catchy choruses or hooks makes this much more respectable in my view. In a way, he reminds me of Joanna Newsom (it would be more accurate to say Newsom reminds me of him).

I have an unrelated opinion, that /daily/ is the last good place for music discussion on /mu/. Everyone outside this thread is obsessed with attacking others opinions, whether that's because they're plebs, poseurs, embryos, or drones. The way I see it is, at the end of the day, who cares? Just listen to the music ya dang goofus.

>>65797389
this is all of early to mid Swans's discography
>>
>>65809041
yeah

never listen to anything else by Van Morrisson
>>
>>65809041
>Everyone outside this thread is obsessed with attacking others opinions
That's called discussion. The problem is that there's very little intelligent discussion in /daily/ or on /mu/ at large.
>>
>>65809536
Why's that? Is there too much of what I didn't like and not enough of what I did like in his wider discography? Or do you just not like him?

>>65809542
I don't understand what you're saying, sorry – are you suggesting that the attacking is good discussion? Or that avoiding it is futile? Or neither of those?
>>
>>65809542
Not at all.

The problem is that there isn't enough people on plug right now
>>
>>65810364
This.

>>65810336
Spewing ad hominems everywhere may not be worthwhile discussion but at least it's discussion. There's not much discussion around these parts, just "reviews" and back patting for posting said "reviews".
>>
>>65810466
That's actually quite an interesting thing to say, and I think you're right in that there isn't a lot of discussion in the truest meaning of the word. I do however disagree with you upon the idea that the ad hominems are better than nothing.
>>
Everyone always complains about other's reviews (on /daily/, rym, p4k, scruffy, etc.)
I want to improve my reviewing style, so what's some review that is actually pretty good in you opinion?
something that's not just a "review".
Any examples of that?

Hey it's this guy. You progressed with your shiggley mashup album, buddy.
>>
>>65810336
The quality gap between Astral Weeks and Moondance is rather massive. Anything that makes Astral Weeks unique is pretty much forsaken on Moondance and as far as I'm concerned Morrisson never made an album quite like it ever again, so yeah.

>>65810466
>Spewing ad hominems everywhere may not be worthwhile discussion but at least it's discussion.
I would agree that spewing ad hominems is better than no discussion at all, except music discussion is kind of an irrelevant thing to do anyway unless you discuss its technicalities (and seeing how pretty much no one here has any proper understanding of music theory et cetera, such discussion is not even possible either here or in the rest of /mu/). There's nothing to gain from a "discussion" that goes like:
"Band X is better than band Y because [reason a] and [reason b], you astonishingly retarded mongrel"
"Haha fuck no, pathetic fucknut, band Y is waaaay better because [reason c] and [reason d]"

>>65810603
There's no such thing as a "good" music review. Simply put your thoughts on paper in order to reflect upon what makes you like the album and move on. Maybe add some line about why others should/shouldn't check it out. Alternatively, just make it a joke review so people get a bit of a smeck out of it.

Yeah, ok, why do people keep complaining about the quality of /daily/ reviews then?? I think there are good reviews, but I was more interested in what you people think are good ones or better helpful ones
>>
>>65811023
In my eyes the problem is the following:

What most /daily/ users do is write what Hampus calls a synopsis, they describe what they heard on the album and then just state stuff at the end like "It was good" etc.

This isn't really a review because a review states why you liked it. Why did you like the drums? Why did you like the atmosphere? The basic rule for me is that if the reviewer dislikes an album, I should be able to find out from that review whether I would like it and vice versa. If you describe why you don't like sth you can do this easily because maybe that reason isn't a problem for you. You could probably argue that you can get this from a synopsis and that it is in that way not inferior to an actual review. I also don't really know how to counter this except by saying that it's just not a review.
>>
>>65810719
>There's nothing to gain from a "discussion" that goes like: [etc]
Remove the insults from that hypothetical conversation, and I think there is something to gain. The reason I personally read and write reviews of music is to try and see music that I like in as many different lights as possible. It can even turn me towards relistening music that I initially disliked

>>65811023
People like to complain, I suppose
>>
>>65810573
A well put together insult can be a lot more entertaining to read than a vacuous block of text filled with cliches and thinly veiled Fantanoisms.

>>65810719
I don't expect anyone here to write academic critiques of Fishmans or some shit but let's not congratulate ourselves for being the last bastion of intellectualism on /mu/ when even the best of us can't produce anything worth reading.

>>65810603
I can't into music reviews because I know nothing about music. I'm not sure how useful film criticism would be to you in this case. Probably not very.
>>
>>65811171
That's what I want to learn
Describing why I like something, and looking deeper in the technicalities of an album and so on. But I haven't found any good examples for that yet
>>65811198
Not very.
>>
>>65811198
>let's not congratulate ourselves for being the last bastion of intellectualism on /mu/
I think most people around here stick around because it's comfy rather than some sort of intellectual bastion. The problem with the rest of /mu/ isn't so much that they have no clue what they are talking abut (well I mean, that's a problem I guess, but we're not really exempted from that either lol), it's the hostile attitude that permeates most of the board. People actively talk shit about each other's opinions and some people just aren't really into that.

>A well put together insult can be a lot more entertaining to read than a vacuous block of text filled with cliches and thinly veiled Fantanoisms.
This is true actually, but people aren't very good at creative insults these days. Not knowing the first thing about each other due to anonymity doesn't help in coming up with a good insult, either.

>>65811183
I don't think there's something to gain from "X is better than Y". The only fruitful conversations about music are ones where one person cares a lot for one album/artist/genre, whereas another can't really get into it, and the person who likes it simply tells the other why he likes it. It's not so much discussion as it is simply receiving more insight into another person's thoughts without necessarily trying to convince each other why you're "right".

/daily/ is the last good place for music discussion on /mu/ =/= /daily/ is nice and comfy

>Sweet Trip - Velocity : Design : Comfort
Came into this not sure what to expect. The cover reminded me of Vaporwave which I'm usually pretty sour on, but it was from 2003 so that was out. People said it was shoegaze which left me feeling eh as well cause its generally not my favourite genre. Holy shit this was amazing. While glitchy it never lost focus on main motifs and melodies of the track. When it mixed things up it brought you to these beautiful gorgeous places. The best way to describe it is like being locked inside a virtual reality game you never want to leave cause the melodies are too damn catchy. Loved it. Will likely grow from replay value I think as well. Don't know how it took me this long to give it a chance.

>seeing how pretty much no one here has any proper understanding of music theory et cetera
That's more important for classical and jazz I think. I feel like having an understanding of historical and geographical context is more important for a lot of music. I mean it's not like you're going to use music theory to analyze Dead Kennedys, you're going to talk about the political aspects of the lyrics and the tone of the music. Not that theory isn't useful for discussing music, I just don't think it's always essential.

In general I feel that between the shitposting sometimes good discussions happen in daily.

>Merzbow - 13 Japanese Birds Vol. 2: Fukuro
>noise

Keeping with the theme of the first volume, Fukuro has some pretty intense drumming with a solid wall of noise to serve as the backdrop. If I didn't know any better I would say that the drumming here has a sort of jazzy quality. The noise is a little more held back (except for the last track where merzbow goes all out) to make room for the drums, it takes on a more ambient or atmospheric vibe. I'm starting to like the exploring that is taking place in this series.

>Merzbow - 13 Japanese Birds Vol. 3: Yurikamome
>noise

Is harsh drone a thing, cause this is what the start of this track is all about. A slow beat, dialed down noise, and this slightly harsh sinister noise. The second track continues the drone exploration but this time with a background of intense drumming and harsh noise. Its not overtly loud and seemingly a quiet intensity, allowing the drone to be more prominent. The last track is a straight up intense noise rock track but Merzbow style. Its great and it fuckin' rocks.

Boredoms - Super Roots 7
it's certainly not as showy as something like Super ae or Chocolate Synthesiser, but it does the job nicely
near constant motorik or motorik like beat as well

The Quietus usually has some pretty good stuff, but a few of their people can be a little too flowery and useless in their writing. Personally I use those specific reviews to figure out what I dislike reading, and want to avoid writing, in a review. Also, they can write some really scathing reviews should they hate an album. If you still want to love either the latest Radiohead or Animal Collective, stay far away from that site. They really killed those albums for me (not that I was particularly enamored with them anyway).

Also, I don't actually think Scruffy is a terrible reviewer. He's not great, but he's very utilitarian, and in an era of lengthy pointless reviews that neglect to tell the reader even the genre or musical context, I can respect that. He tells you who the band sounds like and what that specific album kind of sounds like using a stock vocabulary (probably due to translating difficulties, but w/e).

Christgau, while his taste is undeniably shit, is pretty instructional in the variety of ways he writes. I would recommend checking him out. Granted I haven't read that many of his reviews, but I'm impressed how his writing doesn't get stale. It's really hard to write unique reviews for everything you listen to, and Scaruffi handles this by just streamlining his review format to the point of templating.

And if you haven't, do read some Lester Bangs reviews. He's not a great example of consistency by any means, but that man could write. He also worked his persona into his writing, making him somewhat of a gonzo journalist, and that kind of writing is certainly not for everyone. It only works if you live the kind of live he lived. His Astral Weeks review is legendary.

You flatter me, but no. Most people here in daily just recant what happened in the album and discuss feelings. While an informative review are helpful at best, it's far from what anyone should aspire to in writing.

>James Ferraro - Human Story 3
Your Virus comes preinstalled

I'll admit, he talks a good game. The premise he wrote is enthralling and really gets your hopes up. "wouldn’t it be a great tragedy if that same human intellectual spirit that brought us thus far, from the stone age to industrial age to possible future automation age became paradoxically the double edged sword of our dispossession from ourselves?" Isn't that great? But no, once you get past the (beautiful) opening track its the same as Far Side Virtual. Why is he still hung up on this shit? We get it, dude. Technology is bad, marketing is bad, consumption is bad, Christianity is stupid, communism is good, give up. Or *gasp* maybe it isn't!

Genuinerosity and irony, sine-ing back and forth and back and forth, faster and faster; eventually it starts humming, gaining in pitch, and you have to throw it against the wall and break it just to get it to stop. Conveniently, that's what I feel like doing to most of this album. The compositions are nice (well maybe they aren't composed well at all, I know next to nothing about classical music, if in fact this is classical. I just know the sounds are pretty ok to my ears), but they're just the backdrop for Ferraro's trash concepts about... whatever the fuck. Really really strange to think that he's from close to where I'm from.

Better than Far Side Virtual, but that's not saying much. "We’ve seen the invention of the latte, yoga, cloud computing." Again, this is just not important. The joke is that it's not funny. Get it? 2.0

>Zvuki Mu - Simple Things
>Post-punk, New Wave, Experimental Rock

This is good. This is also weird. Simple Things is a double album of mostly shorter songs, driven by a very heavy bass and a very strange, very 80s synthesizer that sounds like it was stolen from an ambient mall soundtrack. It works despite the juxtaposition. The band has apparently played with The Residents, so that might give you an idea.

Mamonov has a very soothing monotone, and his lyrics are mostly quirky Talking Heads-ish stuff. However, some songs are more serious, with themes relating to memory - nostalgia and regret are most common.

The biggest flaw is the length. A lot of the quirkier songs are pretty much filler. Had this been a single LP instead, this would be a solid 8.

Thanks Shamepai.

If so Space patrol Luluco is the highlight. Phantom world is boring. When i broke my pc tho, i marathoned Nichibros. So keep that in Mind. I did so Because the whole series is in youtube. The Golden Palominos - s/t: Surprisingly funky amid the chaos of the no wave instrumentation. Good dissonant music to feel the textures and vibrate to. The production seemed kind of muddled though which led to many of the songs sounding similar, but I feel this may just be a trademark of the no wave movement. It's interesting how snare drums and programmed percussion are used almost in mockery of popular 80s music of the time, especially in "Cookout."
Favorite song: Clean Plate

Wendy Carlos - Beauty in the Beast: Luciano Cilio percussion vibes everywhere on "Incantation." Much more brooding than I expected. Title track would be great for a carnie massacre.

Nice Gamelan influence on "Poem for Bali," the traditional instrumentation and synthesizer combination works out better than I expected. Coming from the 80s I'm happy to hear it stills sounds fresh albeit inevitably slightly dated. From the artist herself, a reason for the foreign timbres come from the fact that "if you put aside the traditional equally tempered scale, and also standard acoustic and electronic sounds and timbres, and assemble a composition and performance instrument based on anything else, that alone guarantees unique results." Inspirations found on this record range from India, Bulgaria, Bali, Africa, and across the Mid East. Among these regions are the sources that should receive utmost credit for the composed music to remain exciting and unusual to my Western oriented ears, although according to Wikipedia the unusual Harmonic scale is credited to Wendy Carlos. It makes me wonder if, for instance, a native Bali inhabitant were to hear "Poem for Bali" and declare it much more dated and cheesy as they would possess much greater knowledge of traditional Balinese music through the decades. For now my ears remain happily ignorant as it sounds beautifully dynamic with the canonized Western scale thrown out the window.

"Just Imaginings" showcases a complete embrace of the modulation potential synthesizers held, attempting to utilize new instruments to their greatest potential in tandem with those familiar. An admirable attitude from someone eager to embrace the digital age so early and realize it's potential impact. The occasional arpeggiated flutters in both low and high octaves are intriguing and, for better or for worse, remind me of library music used in old educational films. I happen to be a big fan of Exotica and 70s synth music so it fares well for me. In fact, this whole album can be perceived as a deeper, much more immersive piece of exotica music, heavily influenced from firsthand experience in foreign soil.

The imagery Carlos presents with "Yusae-Aisae" is said to "conjure a Hollywoodesque Mid-Eastern marketplace," which I find humorous and frankly not too accurate. This track and "That's Just It" are presented as "studies" and sound as such. They remain altogether slapdash compositions when heard immediately following "Just Imaginings" which displays her obvious talent when willing to explore the sonic capabilities of synthesizers.

Bizarre vocoded vocals open "C'est Afrique" rendering a supposedly traditional African tribal chant into a warped 80s vision of future lyrical music. Very strange, not sure what to think of it. Nice rhythmic drums toward the end of this track laced with metallic harmonized synths or harmonica.

At the end of this Beastly journey is "A Woman's Song" borrowing melody from the powerful Bulgarian folk song "Izlel je Delyo Hagdutin," replacing many aspects with synthesizers because it was 1986 and that was just the proper thing to do back in the day. With the encompassing vocals and the strain of bagpipes removed, the listener is left with a glowing piece of ambiance that carefully wraps up the album in a respectful way as Wendy Carlos' obvious passion for foreign and world influences is sealed through a cover never attempting to surpass the original- a sort of graceful tribute.

Super great, almost gave it a 4.5- tbqhwy. It's experimental without feeling like it was forced to be. It sounds like what it is, a young Japanese dude having fun, influenced by his large record collection ("This is when Shibuya was just crackin" to quote someone from an episode of Crate Diggers) if not outright using it in the music. Hard to sum it up cause almost every track jumps to something new. 2010 is a bleep interpretation of baroque; New Music Machine and Free Fall are hard hitting rock tracks (shoegaze is the first word that comes to mind but that isn't quite right); a couple of the bonus tracks and Star Fruits Surf Rider have a little hip-hop influence; Chapter 8 starts with a totally different Elephant 6-ish band playing a song, then Cornelius jumps in with his version, then back with the other band, then back again; Thank You For The Music starts with a hilarious string of samples, and the main song sounds like it was recorded in a cartoon barn. Best way I can describe it. I don't even know what to call Mic Check or Micro Disneycal World Tour. Definitely definitely definitely check it out
