I listened to Ys again yesterday after hearing Anna Von Hauswolff and instantly remembered why I hated it. Along with David Tibet she's the mascot of awful awful vocalists in 'alternative' folk. She's a terrible artist who writes music for pasty white people who like to think that their taste is 'deep'. Fuck, even Jeff Mangum at least writes fun catchy pop songs enjoyable by those who hate his aesthetics - there is nothing redeemable about this. As for you, Vashti Bunyan in no way makes traditional folk, she and Newsom both make contemporary folk. And the scope or "epicness" of the music they make shouldn't be the sole factor by which you judge merit. Vashti Bunyan's debut has fantastic instrumentation, and I know it's a touchy subject with Joanna Newsom, but Vashti has a much better singing voice.
But do you think Newsom can hold up to other contemporary folk musicians like Nico or Robbie Basho? Or any of the multitude of traditional folk musicians?
