shit, forgot to post commentary.

I just did Lush - Black Spring EP which felt like a pretty mediocre shoegaze ep. So uninspired, the sound Lush had going could easily have been made into something great but the songwriting was just plain bleh.

Skipped a couple compiliations
>Work In
your usual compiliation
>Work Out
basically a continuation of Fine 2
>Casiopea & Jimsaku
One CD of casiopea tunes, mostly from the 80s, another CD of Akira Jimbo and Tetsuo sakurai's band, Jimsaku

And now this,Flowers.
I'd say it's actually the best they have been in the 90s. this album oddly enough does not really feel like a whole but more like a collection of small moments, as if the entire thing was composed with an idea of momentum that privileged having short movements within the tracks to great a constant dynamic of rise and fall rather than overall movements. This is not necessrly a bad idea and is a fairly interesting take on composition. However when combined with the variety the album tries to show in terms of tone, of textures for all instruments,it does make the entire thing lack unity.
Still,an interesting listen. Secret Message is definitely a highlight.
40 down, 23 to go.

Corea - Los peores 7 km de mi vida (2004)
>screamo

Well done screamo is pretty much some of my favorite music (Orchid, Jeromes Dream, the list goes on...), and if this isn't well-done, I don't know what the hell is. What's kinda funny about this album is that the screaming isn't pushed to the forefront and isn't made the emotional backbone of the music, instead the instrumentals generally make up the brunt of the emotion here. And man, are they ever wonderful. The balance between heaviness and airer, yet still kinda ominous and dirty post-rock is pulled of so well, and they even manage to fit some noise in there without it seeming out of place. I do wish that the vocals were more prominent though, because the moments where the screaming is most apparent and prominent are some of the most emotional moments here. Still a wonderful album nonetheless.

"" Best to worst

>Flipper - Album: Generic Flipper
HOOOOOOO BOY. This was rad as fuck. I couldn't ask for more surprises on an album. Noisey and brutal, repetative, and doesn't give a heck about predictible structure. Last song features sax, because of course it does.
9

>Pelt - Ayahuasca
OH BOY TWO HOURS OF DRONE AND FREE FOLK...and it's not terrible??? Honestly though, though there were a few less-than exciting moments, the variation in instruments, the primitivist influence, and the heavy atmosphere, this is one of the best drone albums I've ever heard.
8

>Various Artists - Super Eurobeat Presents Initial D - D Selection
Was REALLY not expecting to like this. Though a few tracks were annoying like Running in the 90's (you've all heard this, even if you don't think you have) but this is probably the most hype collection of music ever. You can drink, club, fuck, and drift your vehicles to this shit.
7

>清水靖晃 - 案山子
Some DAMN good sax on this shit. Has a warm comforting feeling throughout with only a few tracks (mainly 3 and 5) being notably worse. Otherwise, this was fantastic.
7

>Gilles de Rais - Vampire 吸血鬼 / 幽閉
Pale Cocoon side project with more industrial influence. I don't know if the recording quality was THAT poor or the only copies I could find were terrible recording quality (especially the b side) but this was alright I guess.
6

>はっぴいえんど - 風街ろまん
If you're a weeb who likes The Band/CS+N/Neil Young this is your thing. Unfortunately I am only the former.
5

>Pinkshinyultrablast - Everything Else Matters
I liked a lot on first listen, but it got boring really fast?? Like it should practically be a match made in heaven: noise + dream pop and a warm atmosphere, but the post-rock approach to this kills it pretty hard for me. Wish it chose melody over atmosphere sometimes, but if you're a big shoegaze guy, you shouldn't pass this up.
5
>>
>>65605010

>Elliott Smith - Heaven Adores You
Not many "expansions" on previous songs (other than Christian Brothers, which is a great version), more stripped back and previous works, none of which are really that great other than "True Love" or "Plainclothes Man". Most of the picking just feels like he just forgot to add lyrics, they don't really hold substance on their own.
4

>New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
Joy Division minus sincerity and plus a "dancy" fell with a larger synth presence. Not for me.
4

>Ramones - s/t
This broke my heart. I still remember being in middle school/early high school and in my "punk" phase. Loved this back then, but honestly I feel like it was because of who it influenced and not really what it was. Shit, I even had a rad Ramones jacket with the Eagle and everything, shit was tight. And I don't hate Blitzkrieg Bop because I've already heard it a million times, I do because punk's first album is pretty much reminds of the main guy in Green Day's son's band. A lot of attitude for 1976, and I enjoyed how it doesn't take itself too seriously, but goddamn I just can't love this like I used to.

A big 2cd compiliation. about two hours of Casiopea, pulled mostly from their 80s output. it's okay for what it is.

>Lights and Shadows
Somehow picks up where Flowers left in its attempt to diversify the band's patterns, especially in the rythmic department. However the composition itself seems to fall back into their usual flow of almost linear intensity. Sure the interplay between the musicians does make things more interesting on some of the more daring structures here (see The Tease, a very nice funk track, the carefully produced Movin, the very energetic opener Golden Waves and the very soundtracky Riddle) but in many other spots the group here just indulges in their usual style with little brought to the table that has not already been heard.

I will embarass myself with those ratings now.

>Senyawa - Menjadi
Wasn't really my thing. Some of it was pleasant to listen to, but this type of music isn't exactly what I enjoy. The vocals were mostly annoying me. At least it was holding my attention. Can't really say I would listen to this again.

>Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
I don't like this very much. I had to turn it off at "Blue in Green" because it actually made me mad. Turned it on later on "All Blues" and it was much more enjoyable. I feel like shit rating a legend that low just because I'm not a fan of the genre. But I just don't enjoy it very much. I can appreciate the skill and the respect it has in its genre tho.

For a while, I was very excited about listening to this. Casiopea with Jimsaku and their mutual buddies of T-Square all playing and jamming together? Count me in.
Sadly we just have about 16 minutes of each band playing their separate set during the same festival, with some interviews (in japanese) in between the performances. And nobody here actually pulls such a great performance.
What a bummer.

>>

completely understandable
>>

It must be somewhere arround 12/20 or 11/20.
And to be completely honest, Id say it might be worth it. Not because the music is always that good but because listening to that muc hstuff made by the same people does train your ear in a way. When you are so deep into a single artist's catalog you start to notice small things, learn how to pay attention to details, etc. I could have picked some more interesting group or composer but eh

Akira Jimbo and Noriaki Kumagai dance arround drumsets and percussions, passing them to each other as the album goes on, Minoru Murakiya going for some droning backi ng synths and precise production, a couple guest musicians to add in some colour, I'm not sure what more I could ask.
This was actually quite good. the two percussionists coupled with the attention to backing sounds make for an itneresting listen although the entire sound can get a little tiring past the 50 minutes mark. Still, the rythmic drive is probably the best the band has reached thus far, and the coupled melodic work by both keyboards, guitar and occasionally bass or flute is here to make sure the rythmic frame does not o to waste.

Real talk, can we get a spreadsheet going with the approximate average score for every listen along? Don't bother including everyone's names, because it isn't a competition or anything.

I just want to see: is it just my imagination, or does nearly every listen along album suck?

With the exception of last week, I think most listenalongs would average a 4 or 5.

Yes it is :o
>>
question: how do I get a chance at picking a listenalong album?
>>
>>65611059
most people say most music is avergage
so it makes sense that the listenalongs tend to end up being around 5 in average
>>
>>65611336
you need to get dubs and buy a /Daily/ Gold Account

People did like my pick though, guess I just have good taste...
>>
>>65611336
you would have needed to sign up for it when I asked for participants last month
I added you to the end of the current schedule now, which means it's your turn on the 7th of January

If you have a /daily/ Gold Account I could place you a bit earlier in the list

Thanks man. the tracks you posted aren't really my thing either, still a little too smooth and slow for me.

worst listenalong of all time?
>>
>>65611445
yes.
>>
>>65611346
I'd wonder if that's lower than the aggregate average rating of every album rated by every daily trip though?

>>65611374
Well, yeah. They better like Sleeping Beauty.
>>
>>65611473
Probably yes. Case being I'd never listen to italian prog or today's pick if it wasn't a listenalong. You probably have better criteria for choosing an album than some random thingy.
>>
>>65611473
pretty much this >>65611510

most people don't venture out of their comfort zones for the majority of albums they listen to
which totally makes sense

Any other experiences with jazz? Artists or records you've liked?
If you want really active stuff then digging into free jazz and avant-garde is a maybe. Do you listen to any music you'd consider abrasive?
>>
>>65611556
This is true.
>>
>>65611625
is it?

Alright, here are the reviews I never posted last night because I'm dumb. I think these could use some more revising, but nobody reads them anyway.

>Part Chimp - I Am Come
A mix of noise rock and post hardcore, with the occassional whiff of something metal. Unfortunately, this is a relatively played out genre mixture, but at least the band seems to be pretty self-aware, and they don't often take themselves too seriously here. Case in point, the closer basically belongs on Musical Abortions, with every instrument noise-walling to the best of its abilities, clipping like all get out until it all just stops abruptly at the end, leaving just one lame bass guitar noodling away. I legit had to stifle laughter, so my coworkers probably think I'm just crazy, giggling away at Excel spreadsheets.

I really appreciate the none too serious attitude of the band, but I wish I was a bigger fan of the music. It just seems pretty played out.
>6/10

>Bleak House - Terje Rypdal
Art pop, progressive rock, free jazz, jazz rock, the works. An odd combo for sure, it sounds like the typical “art pop” album except with a lot more jazz, whether that be straight, free, or on the rocks. I really don’t have a lot to say about this thing. It had some cool sounds, but it left so little impact, especially whenever there were vocals.

I’ll give it another listen soon, though. I feel like it could grow on me
