Now that I have an LP... holy fuck my wrist is in pain. I never would have thought before that LPs aren't comfortable to play sitting down. And the thickness of the neck makes my wrist hurt in it's muscle memory position for sweeps and other gay shredding.
How the fuck does Alex Lifeson do it in an LP.
>>
>>65356660
wear a strap when you sit down so it sits better. it's a really shitty design to sit down and play with.
>>
>>65356660
Angle the neck away from you rather than flat against your chest.
>>
>>65356670
Yeah, right now for playing in the upper neck I have the right side of its butt (the knob side) sitting in my right leg, and I have the pup switch section in the direction of my chin. So like 45° angle while sitting in my right leg, kinda like spanish guitar when you don't have a left foot rest.
>>
>>65356660
It's probably just your technique. If you play with your thumb behind the neck 100% of the time it's going to be uncomfortable. That technique works on thin flat backed necks (like on an Ibanez or classical guitar)but with a fat Gibson shaped neck it will most likely hurt.

I like playing with my thumb on the side of the neck

Why do bass strings require so much tension? They're longer scale for the lower notes, I get that, but then you still need super thick strings because they have to be at 35-45lbs of tension. Why does a guitar work just fine with 15-20lbs of tension on the strings? Different play style or what?

the rolling bass stuff is why it sounds like charlie brown, not the piano tone. and i'm pretty sure that is the same chord and key from the charlie brown song too.

i don't know why you're posting piano music in here, the only way that can be played on guitar is to do the double handed tapping crap and everyone here mostly hates that style

American Standard Telecaster
SG Original II
Custom B-bender Telecaster

Larrivee D-03R
Washburn R314KK
Phin (Thai dulcimer)
Seagull Merlin (dulcimer)

MESA Lonestar Classic 2x12
MESA Single Rectifier 50W
Laney IRT212 Cabinet

I usually use the SG w/ the Single Rec/Laney for gigging, the Tele w/ the Lonestar for jamming/writing/recording, the Larrivee for writing/recording, the Washburn as a travel guitar, the dulcimers as coffee table toys, and the Custom B-bender Tele as a museum piece (terrible to play, needs a complete restoration).

I get away with using only a single SM57 because I only record acoustic projects at home. A second mic to catch the reverb and room ambiance would be nice but I'd rather save that money to buy more guitars, I'm mostly satisfied with the sound I'm getting. I haven't run into any issues with weak low end, in fact I often find myself dropping the low end 6 dB every time I record rhythm with Larrivee. I'm still very new to mic placement, the sound quality may be good but my mix is usually all over the place (https://soundcloud.com/epoch6).

Great collection mang.

I would welcome a condenser as a pair to the SM57. That way I could play with placement, SM57 at the neck angled and condenser to the soundhole direct, which seems to be the popular way to do it.

That said, the SM57 is so well rounded that it gets me by with everything I do, shitty vocals, shitty amping, shitty acoustics.

>>
>>65357035
Most "high end" guitars are nothing special anyway. If it's got notable features(the sort most people hate) The price can be justifiable, but most of the time what you're paying for is just looks/prestige. If you want performance, the set up and fretwork is just as good on a cheap guitar that's seen professional help as an expensive guitar that's seen professional help.

By the way, two prong outlets are still grounded, they just don't have the neutral/ground redundancy thing. I don't know how that works exactly but you should be able to get buzz free performance with the outlets you have.
>>
>>65357189
But sweep arpeggios are the epitome of guitar music I don't get it. Isn't this guy just better at guitar?
>>
>>65356123
Has anyone got some useful lessons/exercices for two handed tapping ? All I can find is the regular boring shred type of doing trills with the right hand.
>>
>>65357241
>most of the time what you're paying for is just looks/prestige
I feel this is the general opinion because of Gibson and Fender and their reissue, vintage, relic and all other bullshit.
Would never justify the cost of a R9 Gibson but I would tolerate a Tom Anderson or Aristides.
>>
>>65357241
>two prong outlets are still grounded
"No"
You have phase and neutral on 2 prongs, that's it.
>>
>>65357306
Find an arpeggio you like, or just a scale.
Run the roots/bassy notes with the left, low in the fretboard (aka above the 10th fret) then run in the same arpeggio/scale the rest of the notes with the right hand high up in the fretboard (past the 12th).
>>
>>65357306
I'm interested in this two. I saw tapping used interestingly in some math rock or something group, and I don't really see it as a gimmick anymore. That said I don't really listen to math rock so maybe it will be useless for me. I'd like to mess with it anyway, but my so far limited experimentation hasn't produced... fucking notes. Tapping seems hard.
>>
>>65357344
Agree, besides those two, almost everyone else's high ends are properly high end and you can feel the quality instantly.
>>
>>65357344
It also depends on what you call high end. Diminishing returns are obviously a thing, but going from a typical 800$ guitar to 1500$ or 2000$ is still noticeable IMO, after that it's mostly the same because you get a "perfect" guitar in that price range (or you get 98% of perfect)
>>
>>65357350
neutral is ground
>>
>>65357014
>>65357124
If you're mainly recording acoustic try an AT4040 or an SM7. They don't have the high end roll off that an SM57 has. Can use the 57 to get some slightly darker room noise then too.

I've had brilliant results with SM7 and they're built like tanks too. AT4040 is just a personal favorite of mine in the condenser world.

>>65357189
Becker's technique was very heavily legato more than the Malmsteen style sweeping. He also had a lot of feeling to it. That and Becker is a really nice person, Malmsteen isn't.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMuomrgyRBw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lR1tt24mo4
>>
>>65357367
I get the general idea, but I can't exactly come up with anything, which is why I'd like to find some lessons to practice it

>>65357370
hit the fretboard harder, you're not picking, which is why you're making less noise
>>
>>65357400
Honestly in terms of playability it's hard for me to imagine a difference between an $800 guitar and a $15,000 guitar. I mean, I guess if that $800 guitar was loaded with features to the point you couldn't get good fretwork + those features at that price... But for the sake of debate, let's just say both guitars have been leveled/crowned/polished/set up by a competent luthier. Where are the differences in playability coming from? I think at that point you get into stuff that's just preference like shape of the neck.

Well, I don't doubt that there's plenty of $800 guitars with sub par fretwork, but really you ought to be getting perfect frets at that price.
>>
>>65357562
>but really you ought to be getting perfect frets at that price

you get tons of noise in the amps when you don't have grounded outlets.
>>
>>65357562
Pretty much everything bar shitty gios and axls sound the same
>>
>>65357673
They're my favorite dynamic microphone. I put an SM7 on one cone, and two SM57 on another, one straight on, one at a 45 degree angle.

Just be aware there is a slight tonal difference between an SM7 and an SM7B (what they sell now). Odds of running into an SM7 aren't great though. Built like tanks though.

You also do need a fair amount of gain for them. Some interfaces don't seem to put out enough juice.

>>

>>
>>65357350
>>65357241
that's only true if you have a TN-system.
here in Norway, we use IT most often, which means there are no neutral cables, just a ground and three phases, and in older houses such as the one i live in, the owners just straight up didn't care about grounding properly, which means none of my outlets have ground, which makes having audio equipment a nightmare.

You don't actually use your guitar pedals while wearing shoes, do you /gg/.

I'm the guy from the last thread asking for advice about classical guitars

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/msg/5613943362.html

I can't find anything on this specific model (Ventura Bruno 1583), anybody know how much it's worth?
>>
>>65359830
Not strongly related but valencia is good for playability but weak resonance. That said I've only ever played one valencia so who knows.
>>
>>65359724
Oh, yeah there's no ground on the power cable it's as simple as that but literally no one in my area works on amps it seems. I'd have to drive somewhere at least a few hours away.

I might start playing stuff that needs tube sounds soon though so maybe I'll get it looked at
>>
Why do some people swear by tube amps? Theyre over priced and sound like shit. The guy in the shop tried to sell me one by saying its what hendrix used to sound cool...
>>
>>65360114
It's for the overdrive, in short. IMO crappy amplification in general, but if that's the distortion you want go for it.
>>
>>65359830
looks like a piece of shit from the 60s.

Just buy a Yamaha senpai
>>
>>65359830
I'd pay a fifty maybe, the neck is banged up, but since he isn't negotiating just don't bother.
What the other anon said, just get a yamaha, they are cool.
>>
>>65360114
Well there's a certain kind of overdrive and compression that they offer but a tube amp by itself doesn't mean anything, they were the standard for years so of course there's also shitty ones.

Any good amp is going to be pretty expensive, though. A good solid state is probably at least $400 or $500 at cheapest and a good tube amp head is going to be $600 or more most likely.

It's worth investing in both depending on what kind of sounds you're after. But I definitely stand by solid state modeling amps mostly being shit, I like amps that have their own unique sounds and quirks, not a cheap imitation.
>>
How diverse are the effects in different whammy pedals?

I'm looking to get one to go with my Bass Big Muff and Boss-dd7 delay. I'm playing bass guitar and trying to make some noise rock so the crazier the sounds i can get out of it the better. I'm also thinking about getting a pitch shifter in the future (like an Earthquaker Pitch Bay) and i'm not sure how well that would work with certain whammy pedals.

Would really appreciate some advice and recommendations for whammy pedals.

>>
>>65360114
I swear by tubes not because of their mystic perception but rather because of how well they take some effects.
Some (pedal or not part of the amp at least) effects just don't ring or sound as nice in SS and especially bad in Software/Profiler based amps. Classic example is overdrive. Overdrive in SS does nothing amazing, but in tubes it sounds nasty in a good way. You'd get that sound in SS with a distortion instead, but it's hard to find a nice distortion that works well with SS because they tend to clip horribly most of the time.
Another for me is some kinds of reverb or any kind of out of phase effect (chorus, reverb, delay, phaser, flanger, etc.), they tend to ring differently. Not all of them, but some of them do because they overdrive the tubes in a way.

Also, for practical reasons they are cool because the designs tend to be simple, it's easy to play with, and if something dies you can replace it with not much problem (same goes for the more analog like SS amps, not so much for the software based ones).

Also, not all of them are overpriced, and there was or still is a boom for bedroom tube amps, you get great sound, your pedals work super nice, and it doesn't cost a fortune nor are they unnecessarily loud.

>>65360510
Have you looked in ebay or some listings for an used Yamaha C40?
Check before you go to this dude's place. If you don't find any Yamaha C40 for super fucking cheap, then go for it.
>>
>>65360510
Wait, you know what, lemme check listings for you, give me a couple of mins and I'll show you what catches my eye.
>>
>>65360510
I wouldn't, too much of a risk for a beginner. In your situation I'd get something that I could be fairly certain is going to be halfway decent rather than gamble on something that could be utter shit.

Do you want it just because it's old? I know nothing about electric guitars but with classicals, there's basically no reason to get an older entry level guitar over a newer one. It only heightens the risk of it being shit.

It's best if you're aiming for crazy to get an expression pedal changing any parameters you want. Look into the zoom b3x or a similar higher end modeler. The shit you can do is insane. Cool thing about the b3x is you can add an expression pedal to it to have two separate controllable parameters.
>>
>>65360706
Electric guitars haven't really changed much, apart from getting lighter. You're better off buying used unless a newer entry level guitar has a decent quality to price ratio.

Is it possible to damage an amp(or speaker) to a point that it just has much less power?

I've played my combo pretty loud over the years. Activating the clip light a lot. And yesterday I was jamming with a friend and I felt like my amp was way quieter than normal. On top of that, I couldn't even get the gain past 10o clock without the clip light remaining lit
>>
>>65363646
>that some guy on /gg/ seems to collect.
Gearspammer ?

>>65363675
Pushing your amp to its limits isn't all that good for the speakers. As for the amp itself it'll probably make you go through tubes faster, but if you change them there shouldn't be any problem I think.
>>
>>65363675
I've fucked up combo amps plugging a bass into them a lot. Too much watts or something i dont know. The speakers didn't break, but the brains fried.
>>
>twf my edge machine arrives tomorrow

>>
>>65363736
Not sure if it's Gearspammer. I don't think he has a lot of guitars despite the tons of pedals he has.
>>
>>65363675
The clip light doesn't react to the speaker at all, so of the clip light was clipping sooner the problem is probably with the amp rather than the speaker. Speakers can be damaged over time by loud play, but I don't think that's what's happening to you.

Most normies will be amazed if you can tap and tremolo pick properly.
