Friendly reminder: the kiddies who post in /gg/ threads have nearly ***zero*** experience concerning guitar. Playing, repair, new player recommendations, etc. The average age in these threads is around early 20s: green as shit grass.

If you have an actual question this is probably one of the most uninformed & least knowledgeable places you could ever expect a proper answer to come from.

Be weary of any advice given here as it's amateur & perfunctory at best.

Have a nice day.

I can see why.
I'd really like to see a reverse fanned fret 7 string, with an extra high A and a 25.5-22.5" multiscale, that's the only reason I'd buy something so short.

I'm having tuning stability issues with my guitar when I use the tremelo. I think it has to do with the nut slots being too small. When i pull up on the trem the strings will stay slightly sharper, when i push down on it they stay flat.

It came with 9's on it which I have since upped to 11's without filing the nut. Do I need to file the nut?
>>
>>65337276
All you really need is a allen wrench set, fret stuff, and nut slot files. If you want to set up other people's stuff then feeler gauges and radius cards are good.

Oh yeah and the soldering stuff. Buy some flux, and a set of helping hands.

As far as fret stuff goes polishing paper is nice.
>>
>>65337361
Is this bait?
>>
>>65337361
Yeah, but you only need to widen it so it's no big deal. Sand paper is enough. Best to do it with the strings loosened but still on the tuners so you can keep checking the width against your strings.

What's strings size preference? I have some 10-52 i used to buy. Last place around went out of business, everything must go sale. I bought a bunch of regular 9-42 because that's all that was left. I put them on 1 guitar, i like them. How does one settle on a particular size?
>>
>>65338751
No need to settle, really. Different strings sound different and feel different. Keith Richards plays with 7s.

>>65338844
It was more out of necessity and cause they were on a liquidation sale. i got the fat ones because when i was a dumb kid i thought light ones were for sissies. I continued to get them because i set the guitar i had up for them. I also downtuned, used like the fattest picks. Like some 14 years later i just still used fat ones. The 9s are pretty neat, they're easy as fuck to bend.
>>
>>65338984
What kind of jazz?
I know Mike Stern uses a Yamaha Pacifica, which is similar to a telecaster, while Pat Metheny uses a Ibanez hollowbody with 1 neck pickup, and his tone is extraordinary and it's the most durable guitar I know of (touring wise).

In all honesty whatever feels right in your hands, you want your optimal playing when playing jazz, so get something comfortable.
>>
>>65338844
I read an article about hendrix talking shit to jeff beck about using light strings. It prompted him to use heavier strings.

Same article said hendrix set a guitar's action like 1/2 inch high. Told people that's how all his guitars were. Just to fuck with them.

You guys are overthinking it. The markers are in the normal places on a two octave neck. The higher octave has four small inlays and one large one, the lower octave has four large inlays and one small one. It's just a design choice, it doesn't mean anything musically.

It does the things I want it to do.
Recording, touring, bedroom, etc. all have different needs.

Recording:
FX loop to experiment with pre or not.
The right tubes or the right sound if not tubes.

Touring:
The right amount of power and speaker versatility.
EQ can be simple, I'm not gonna be very picky here and I can always use a graph EQ.
Easy to repair, or sturdy af to never be repaired.
Weight.
I might even copy some recent dudes who use small pedal preamps and get a simple poweramp simply because of weight and ease of use.
Or racks, SS or Tube, doesn't matter.
I don't gig anymore anyway.

Bedroom:
Good tone while being quiet. An all tube 50W amp is never gonna hit the "point" of natural overdrive at a comfortable volume for example. Hell, even my 5W teletubie is too loud.
Small.
Preferably a combo instead of a head.

Also, I personally like tubes because I prefer to overdrive rather than use a "dirty" channel or distortion pedals to get the same sound in SS amps.
Although SS amps are great for clean playing at comfy volumes.

I actually like their headstocks, it's what I would consider a more tension efficient version of the fender.
That Pucci signature was my favourite music man by far, with the piezo and everything. I almost bought one in... 2009-2010 or so, but decided against it in the end since I was traveling.
And the strat one is basically that, just with that weird teardrop like pickguard/pup plate.

In fact, I'll look for listings on that one, there might be one available and I'd buy it instead of another other "metal" strat I'm searching for atm.

I think the publicity it got, when it came out, as being for girls kinda ruined it

Beginner here.
I want to play one of my favorite songs, but I don't understand how to read what this guy on Ultimate Guitar posted. He put up the chords, but there are no chords being strummed in the song, but it's just single notes/strings (sorry if I'm not explaining this correctly).
The song is Apple Orchard by Beach House.

How do I read this? Do I individually play each string in each chord? It doesn't sound right. Or maybe I'm not doing this correctly.

>>65342417
google what a capo is if you want to play it with chords

buy one and put it on the 1st fret, you'll probably want to get one eventually anyways

if you want to play it how it is in the song, learn it by ear. beach house songs are easy
>>
>>65342676
I have a capo and use it, I just don't understand how this guy is referencing the chords/tabs.

What does he mean?

But I guess I will learn it by ear for practice anyway. You have a good point.
>>
>>65342883
the intro is the first two lines

the lyrics start on the F above you, changes to G at the word give, the G continues to the second line at "don't"

its kind of a stupid yet very convenient way to show chords in a song.

outro is the last 4 lines.

Even when there's no strumming, the music moves between chords. When the song is on a chord, the guitar part will play mostly notes on that chord. For example on the F chord, the guitar will play the notes F, C, A. Anything on the F major scale(or off of it really) is fair game though.

Okay, I think I get it now. So, he's giving us the chord to suggest they have the majority of the notes needed in the song, and all I would have to do is just filter those notes out, right?
>>
>>65343800
Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say he's saying that, only that those are the chords of the song. It's not really his own interpretation or anything. Try fingering the chords and picking around for now. You can cop the feel of a lot of songs that way.

so i'm a mega poorfag and i play out of an orange practice amp i bought years ago. i've been messing around with just recording it out of the amp as neutral as possible and then running it through an amp simulator on my computer.

garbage playing aside could i probably get a passable tone out of the computer amps or should i give up now?
>>
>>65344128
Outside of the clipping which you need to get rid of imo (unless you're looking for a lo-fi sound) it's kind of interesting sounding.

That said, if you want a normal guitar amp sound recording in the computer there's two options for you I guess:
Record out of the amp (does it have a "line out"?) and EQ it but don't use an amp simulator (otherwise it's two levels of amp and EQ and so on, hence why the weird but interesting sound you get).
Record straight to the computer from the guitar and use an amp simulator in there (VSTs applied over a direct recording in an editing program such as audacity/pro tools, or direct real time emulation like guitar rig 5).

Your collection was my dream collection as a teen.
I'm starting to realize it little by little now, and it feels weird (but fun) to acquire pointy metal guitars finally.
I also wanted an ESP Explorer (what were they called?), I really liked the design of the Atreyu player one all edgy with blood, and because of him I also liked the George Lynch guitars like the tiger and kamikaze ones.
And until Jackson started making 24 fret RRs the AL model was just perfect.

A lot of them are much more ergonomic than people expect. Vs are comfortable standing but tend to have garbage access or bad balance (exception being the SV and RR24), but Explorers are really comfortable.

>I also wanted an ESP Explorer (what were they called?)
The ESP EX or ESP MX250II? They have two Explorer designs if you don't include the Snakebite thing...

>And until Jackson started making 24 fret RRs
Jackson RR24 are really nice guitars, but ESP SV Standards aren't much more and blow them out the water.

So sell your gear to your best friend before you hand the divorce papers, then divorce her, and after that (you have to wait a bit) rebuy them (there needs to be a paper trail). You might have to give her the money from the sold stuff, but it's better than her lawyer selling them and splitting the money.

Sterling Ball thinks radically different equals innovation. I do like that they are including some features into every new model by default: stainless steel frets, 12db boosts on vol knob, coil split, etc. But some of their designs are plainly bizarre.
>>65341790
Majesty is odd as fuck but plays wonderfully. It's not until you actually play it that you kinda get why it was designed that way. I'm not sure if the black shovel was a good idea at all but they seem to have fixed that with the Artisan series. I can't complain about mine since I got it for much much less than what you find everywhere.

Are vintage classical guitars durable or am I better off buying new? I'm not familiar with classical guitars.

>those guitars are really versatile and full featured and are a good deal second hand
I could have bought a new one at clearance for 800 euros, but didn't.
Now they are 1.2k used.
I'm a dumbass.

>>65349055
That's not vintage, it has cheap clear lacquer over it.
Some spanish/classic guitars have terrible action and the tuning pegs are shitty.
I actually would buy a yamaha or some big name one, and I'd try them beforehand of course.
I have had many, and really, handmade or local made from spanish or mexicans is really hit or miss because they are overpriced and lack good quality control, it's more "muh local delicacy" and blind pride.
Yamaha on the other hand sells concert grade spanish guitars and it reflects down to their entry level student aimed models which are also nice.
>>
>>65349281
What Yamaha model would you recommend? I'm not exactly a beginner (been playing electric for almost 9 years), I just want a bit of change.

I was playing classical guitars at a store today and I honestly can't tell the difference between a $200 classical and a $800 one. The $99 Lyon one felt and sounded pretty shitty though
>>
>>65349055
>>65349407
I'd give him 50-60. It's nothing special but it doesn't have a modly fretboard.
Just check the action before buying, since they don't have trussrods if the action is high, that's how it'll always be.

Things to look for in a classical guitar, since they have different qualities that might not be obvious, so:
Volume, it's hard to tell from the playing position but guitars do have a big variance in volume depending on their construction.
Action, terrible action makes for terrible chords and terrible playing, but you don't want it super flat like a superstrat because you lose volume (from buzzing).
Check the nut, cheap plastic makes tuning a chore because the strings get stuck. A nice silky bone or whatever material that isn't pvc is nice.
The saddle too, it can be replaced easily but you want something that lets the strings ring and sit nicely.
Neck is flat in the classicals, but it's easy to get it wrong and some chords can be unnecessarily hard to play.
In relation to volume, check that it has a nice bright tone but bassy in the 6th.
It has to sound like a beautiful wood chamber so to speak, like a classical instrument, if it sounds lame like a toy then it's not worth it.
Wood does play a role, Flamenco has a brighter sound but less sustain, Classical have a well rounded sound and more sustain.
This would be black magic dumb talk for electrics, but because these are acoustic, it is indeed important.

I had an used C40, it doesn't have a lot of volume and tone but the neck is comfortable. Paid like 30 bucks for it.

I'm not very well versed in models, but as with electrics, the sweetspot starts at around 300 for value for money with every brand basically.

I'd get a cheap one with good action, to see if I like spanish guitar, and then jump to a better one.

/gg/ I'm in a bit of a dilemma right now...
So I'm looking at buying a strat like guitar because currently I only have an LP around.
I don't wanna splurge and buy a middle-high range priced one (above 400) though.

So... at first I was kinda excited and thought about buying something metal oriented but I also like classic designs obviously:
>LTD-M1000
You know, superstrat, FR, 81-85 emg combo, neckthrough, etc.
found one for 300, black.
>Ibanez S470
Kinda the same deal just with Ibanez pups, their own FR (the s line one, which is ball bearing), and it goes for like 250, so cheapest option but since I'd be changing the pups, it'd come out the same in the end.
>G&L tribute guitars
Basically there's a bunch of G&L from the tribute line listed locally at around 300-400, obviously the more traditional of the bunch, basically strats/teles with G&L "improvements" (however you see them).

I'm not sure what to do, I'm leaning towards the G&Ls... anyone have experience with them?
>>
What do you think of the tremol-no? Is it worth the 50 bucks?

Wanna hear some bullshit?

Gibson has never produced a Historic SG Junior, because the vintage models are so inexpensive (3-5k, generally) that the people who would drop the money for a Historic model could just buy a vintage one.

And then they threw us poor fags a bone by putting out a sub-$1000 model, except for no good reason they put the controls in the wrong spot.

Bullshit man. I just want a fucking SG Junior the way they're meant to be.
>>
>>65352279
I have an epi version of this bullshit.
It's great, I adore it, but it's a piece of shit.
I think they don't make it because who would drop money for that?
Remember the LP junior special they did a few years ago? it was like this, wraparound, single P90, junior backplate and electronics, etc.
I like them, I really do... but paying gibson money for something that never stays in tune and the intonation is all funky is a bit too much.
It works for epi money, but not more imo.
I'd just mod an Epi SG-400 and call it a day.

The reason they aren't made is because the price they'd sell them for is in the same ballpark as a real vintage model. It's not like a Les Paul where the vintage models are tens of thousands of dollars and the reissue is "only" six grand. And I suspect the reason they purposely gimped the Gibson USA version, which sold for around $600-700, is because they didn't want to establish a price precedent that would bite them in the ass if it became economically viable to produce a Historic model.

This.

If you want a solution where you can switch between float and dive you can get something simple like this. Much cheaper than a Tremol-no and much more effective.

You're either retarded or baiting.

There is no SG headstock. They all have Les Paul headstocks because they're all Les Pauls.

Ok, I'll jump into the shitposting train...
SGs and LPs and many Gibson in general don't share the same fucking headstock design? Not counting Vs, Explorers, 'Birds, and that gay ass looking Gibson without wings headstock.
>>
>>65353014
Not him but early days SGs were actually called Les Paul because it was intended as a replacement of the original design. Which is probably why the 1961 SG you posted actually has a big Les Paul written on it instead of the classic design.
>>
>>65353084

That's exactly what they were. They were branded as Les Pauls and sold as Les Pauls, and they carried over all four Les Paul SKUs.

It was during 1962 that they actually started transitioning into the SG name.

I wonder how many people even know that the traditional Les Paul was discontinued in 1960 and wasn't produced again until 1968. For seven years the SG was Gibson's flagship model, which just sounds inconceivable today.

Is that an early version of the vibrola tailpiece?
>>
>>65353179

I don't know if the maestro was specifically an evolution of the sideways vibrola or if it was just a parallel design, but the sideways model (pictured) did come earlier.

I just always thought that the pickups on my cheap Peavey Raptor were bad/at the wrong height and the bridge humbucker was at a better position

I miss my backstage.
I used it to rip self made scales (aka making shit up) on my Ibanez with the help of a Metal Zone, sounded like total shit.

Keep up with the classical, it will improve your playing a lot imo.
