After 94 death metal became too inundated with midpaced groovy nonsense (Krisiun for example), tryhard brutal garbage that misses the point (Dying Fetus), and melodeath cancer like Dark Tranquility and In Flames. Not saying that was never present beforehand, but the ratio of good to bad was MUCH higher, None So Vile and Immolation's sophomore and junior efforts might have been great but the scene was still largely infested with garbage. Black metal became far too derivative in the latter 90's with atmoshit, progressive acts that turned black metal into a contest of who can be the gimmickiest, and tremelo abusing norsecore nonsense that lacked the ear for riffing that the pioneering acts in the genre still came out. Good black metal still came out beyond that poinr but most of it was mixed with either thrash, death, or heavy metal.

Immolation are the superior band and Incantation's real crowning effort was Onward To Golgotha. Towards The Megalith honestly crushes everything Incantation released since The Mortal Throne of Nazarene, why Immolation and Incantation constantly get compared is beyond me however. They do share similarities (focus on rhythm over lead, anti-religious lyrics, using heavy riffing to build a sense of crushing atmosphere, four syllable -ation band name which starts with I) but both go by it in different ways, then again those similarities just might be why they get lumped together.

True but at this point the understood definition of extreme metal is pretty much anything that includes harsh vocals. Of course even that poses some problems considering so many bands use screamed/growled vocals while mixing it with other softer styles for contrast
