BASSBREAKER 45

OR

65' DELUXE REVERB REISSUE

???????????????????

I've tried a twin and a bassbreaker 18/30, loved the bassbreaker and had mixed opinions on the twin, however that was mostly because I couldn't dial in a good low volume tone.

What guitarists use a fingerpicking style for electric? I started playing acoustic with my fingers and figure I might as well commit and play lead guitar without a pick. Who do I have to look up to? Including the Knopf

What's a decent loop pedal you'd recommend for a guy who's only got an OD pedal? I want another pedal and decided to get a looper to help me practice. Is the boss RC-1 any good? the RC-3 seem too expensive and I think it has too much stuff in it.

The only thing I'd recommend you is getting rid of that GIO and practice amp. Nothing good's going to come out of any of these.

The GIO's going to be there for another while, it's still fine to me.

I'm looking for a better amp though. I heard the MG30CFX is shit but most reviews say it's good and when I played one it was nice (much better than the Ibanez). Anything in its price range you'd recommend?
>>

You won't find many people on /gg/ that actually know or tried the bassbreaker. Sounds good in the video reviews at least.
>>65233806
RC1 is good but very basic, RC2 actually exists and is cheap on the used market and RC3 does seem a bit expensive but is very complete and has a huge memory. Ditto and digitech jamman are also good options.

Been learning through this book and complementing with songs from bands I like. I'm making slow progress, and I'm at maybe page 57 after a couple of months of serious practice but its really fun.
>>
>>65233909
You're not alone in this anon, that's exactly how I proceed.

>>65233963
>The GIO's going to be there for another while, it's still fine to me.
Sounds like you've either lucked out or been playing for a couple months. These things can't stand being played too much.
As for amps, go for a good 1x12", like basically anything with a celestion speaker, any head's going to be limited by your speaker, and any guitar's going to be limited by your amp.
Don't buy a practice amp, even if yours is shit, there's no point in having an expensive practice amp unless you've already got an amp and some money laying around.
Personally I don't like the MGs too much, but they've got enough power for a small venue.
>>
>>65234064
thanks man, looks interesting
>>
>>65234160
so according to you
>speaker>amp>guitar
this is how stupid you sound
>>
>>65233963
I like the MGs quite a bit. They have a tone that's pretty different from other amps. I really like the way they respond to different pickups/guitars. Then again, it doesn't sound like a fender reverb so it must suck
>>
>>65234233
Its a pretty good book, has original practice songs, and teaches theory without being too informative. Its a bit dry, but thats why I also learn songs from bands I like as well. I would recommend it. I like the structure it gives my practice. Helps me a lot.
>>
>>65234267
Any amp will sound like shit if you play it through some bad speakers. The cab's still a non-issue because they're not pricey, you can get a cab with a celestion V30 for 100 bucks if you know where to look at, but your head's still limited by your cab.
Same for the guitar, a GIO through a dual rectifier'll sound better than a prestige through a 5w starter amp
>>
staytrem bridge arrived today, pumped as fuck
>>
>>65234267
Lots of people prioritize amps over guitars.

Here's how you should think about it:
An amp van contribute to some of your final tone or nearly all of it. That's because perfectly flat amps exist. On the other hand, you can have a high gain amp that sounds nearly the same no matter what you plug into it.

Someone saying "the amp is more important tan the guitar" isn't really accurate insomuch as it depends on their taste in amps, but you can't really refute it either.

The thing about cheap practice amps, is that nowadays they are pretty decent at producing a flat boost. In the past they really sucked at giving you a full range, but I think overall they tend to be better now. There's a lot less difference between a high end solid state and a low end solid state these days than in the past. Most people don't like this, but some people tend towards it.
>>
>>65234160
I've been playing for one and a half year. The bridge saddles are going to shit and the selector switch is fucking up but the guitar is comfortable and its sound is alright. I'm actually kind of lucky to have bought a GIO, here in Brazil there's a lot of worse trash around.

For the amp, I want a combo since I don't have too much money laying around for a cab+head. Not too much power wither since I play in an apt. That MG has a 10" speaker. Basically I want a good sounding SS amp that isn't overkill.

After I get a new, better amp then I'll look into a new guitar, probably some RG or S Ibanez with a fixed bridge.

I feel the same way but I think all guitarists regardless of skill feel that way. I think that's how those things go, the thing that drives someone to become incredibly skilled at something is the unshakeable feeling that they're not good enough. At least that's how I feel.

>>65234394
>your head
>limited by your cab

Retarded generalizations like this is why no one should be taking any advice in /gg/ threads seriously. Anyone telling you every amp head is being limited by a single speaker cab should be ignored. There are all sorts of scenarios and amp/cab combinations where this wouldn't be the case at all. This is just an absolutely ridiculous claim to make.
>>

Warmoth is a licensed Fender OEM.
Their necks are just as good, if not better than Fender's.
I've built a few Warmoth partscasters, and they all play as good as Strats I've owned in the past.
>>
>>65233891
Drummer here but I'll apply how I felt to this in hopes it helps. Who cares there is always going to be someone better than you especally with being a musician. It's a hard pill to swallow I still haven't fully swallowed it after 5 years of playing. Just because there are other people better than you doesn't mean you aren't good. I can guarantee you're a phenomenal musician just keep fucking practicing don't ever quit practicing or else you will become bad keep practicing seriously!
>>
>>65234628
Because the amp head vibrates and makes sounds on its own right, so it's obviously not limited by the cab.

>>65234628

The Fake book – If you want to make money at this learn to read and comp, this book has everything to play jazz standards, no one wants to hear your shity rock band unfortunately.

Guitar reranch, they sell vintage paint and fender colors you can buy in spray cans, I did this when I was younger, turned out reasonable.
Buy a Warmoth body unfinished or a USA custom guitars body, a basic wood will run you like 200-300

There are a couple vintage reproduction models fender sells that are reasonable that are in laquer

The Pacifica is actually a very decent underrated guitar as far as function goes, set it up and it works as well as any.

Don't buy a jag for your first guitar, they have weird bridge problems combined with bad tuners it's a begginer's death trap.

Jazzmaster is better, but really don't buy either of those, the controls are complicated, and it has the same issue with the floating bridge.

does anyone have any experience lowering the height of strings on an acoustic with a bone saddle? i've read about it and watched some videos on it but i'm just curious about some of the processes people use to do it. i have some shitty throw away acoustic and want to practice doing stuff like this on it just to get a grip on the process
>>
>>65236728
Because if you are asking if you should buy a second tier squire copy of a guitar you understand how to get upgrade parts, install them, restring, set the truss rod, and intonate it, to make your 300 dollar guitar work how it should?

I'm sure it plays well in tune.

fair, but pair it with a moving bridge for someone who doesn't tune well in the first place, it's a winner.
>>
>>65236885
It's not hard, but you need to know how to set the truss rod first before you do it...
Capo at first fret, hold down the string at the 14th (body) adjust until the fingerboard is almost flat (.01 relief),
keep the capo on 1st, figure out how high you want the height at 12th fret, figure out how much you need to lower, and you need to take twice as much off the saddle.

Once you get the strings off (should be same gauge as original) get a plate of glass and some grits of sandpaper, mark it and sand to the desired height.

You should know where everything else is thought, old guitars usually have neck angle problems that are more involved, the top is often impacted from the bridge pulling forward, and if you go too low on the saddle where there's not enough of a break angle it will back buzz...

ditto looper. i have the small one with only one switch on it. if i had to buy it again i'd spend the extra money and get the one with 2 switches so i could just hit the stop switch instead of having to hit the button twice to make the loop stop. it gets slightly annoying having to stomp on it twice to make the loop stop with the small one. it's not a big deal, just a small preference, thing works fine as is.
>>
>>65237657

So look at two things, look from the side of the bridge on that acoustic, on most guitars in front of the bridge is a 'belly' this happens when a guitar gets older and usually emerges after 10 years or so from the string tension.

the other thing is look down the neck,(tuners to tail) you can see the curve in the neck, that's relief, the guitar needs a little bit of relief because the string orbits in an ellipse, it changes with weather. If it's too much ( bending backwards, then it will buzz in the first 5 frets)

the other thing that happens is the glue loosens on the neck and it usually starts to pull up. Eventually it needs a neck reset.

you can't go farther then flat on the neck, so to get good action, you take a bit off at the nut, get the neck flat, and try to lower the saddle. Beyond that you have to do some something more involved and it's never worth it on junky guitars.

they're probably trying to see if the plane of the frets are flat. thats why if you show someone you're guitar sometimes they'll tell you it can't be fixed, it's too impacted just to do the first 3 things and expect it to work well. when it starts to happen it tends to get progressively worse because the higher the string the more torque it's putting on the top.

but do it, seriously, it's educational to work on junk.

Anyone here in the market for a mahogany neck-through with EMG 81/85s? I just picked up a new Charvel DC-1 for $300 on reverb and it's a fine guitar, amazing for the price.

Imperfections:
2 very very slightly buzzy frets near the nut on the high strings. The action is a bit low for my taste and I'm going to size up to 11s asap which should fix the issue. The fret edges could be a touch smoother but they don't catch and I don't feel them when playing - just when examining closely. Otherwise this thing is surprisingly high quality. I was expecting a 5/10 EMG-loaded backup guitar and got a 7/10. Likely an 8/10 after some light file work.

I'd never heard of or seen these before and got it on a drunken whim. One of the better drunk buys I've made. Easily the best $300 guitar I've played. I guess they were $750+ before the line was discontinued. Thanks, booze.

Steer clear of the the D?-2 and -3 models, they are downgrades to set or bolt on necks. The neck is the selling point here. 25.5" scale, compound radius, *unfinished*, just oiled. It feels wonderful and plays great.

I can take pics if anyone is interested. The ones available on the internet aren't very clear.

I'm finally getting into guitar...
At age 20. Is there Hope for me /gg/? I'm researching a good teacher, and I'm buying a shit ton of books too. I've sold off all my video games and I am devoting my life to becoming a better guitarist. Advice for the newbie beginning his journey?
>>

i started playing at 19, am still relatively new but i did the justin guitar beginner course and about half of the intermediate course before getting bored and going on to just learn licks from songs and make my own stuff. justin guitar's comfy. i donated him 20 bucks
>>
>>65233519
many jazz guys do that, mostly because they need to have more control over which chord notes they're playing. it's not very popular in rockish type of music to exclusively finger pick.
>>
>>65240266

It's most likely an extremely low value Japanese copy from the mid-1970s.

The headstock alone makes a Hondo II look like a Tokai by comparison.

Junk.

as for advice, read >>65233303

justinguitar.com appears as music theory but it's actually a page that's perfect for beginner guitar players. lots and lots of accurate info by a really nice guy. this should be your main focus

and also read the beginner information and FAQ (the reddit link), that page is like a guitar dictionary, has almost everything you need to know about guitar.

when you finish the justinguitar beginner and intermediate course (and the rest of the lessons on whatever) you can read the books in the OP, watch the DVDs, etc.

just practice basic chord structures everyday for like a few months and you should have the hang of it. How new are you? Because its probably just feeling weird about the finger placement, a lot of people get kinda worked up about that, that's why a lot of people drop the instrument after about a month. So just keep practicing chords, then learn some pieces (make sure they aren't too difficult) and just have fun i guess idk.
>>
>>65233519
It doesn't fit well for people who use distortion, shit gets very noisy without proper muting techniques which is hard to do with finger picking.

yes, i use one for gigs, t's the 15w one. long story but the drummer in the band i'm in bought one and i use it because it's easier to carry than what i was using (twin reverb, thing weighs a fucking ton), and he liked how it has a direct out for a mic cord so it can be plugged directly into the board for the pa

it's pretty good. a bit too bassy and not quite enough mids for me, but overall it's fine for what i need it for. i mostly play in small bar type of places so i don't really need anything very loud. the distortion is pretty good on it, but it doesn't have a footswitch to go back and forth, it just has a knob on the amp. i just leave it clean and use pedals for that though, so it's not a big deal.

7.5/10 amp. i prefer my twin, but it's just too fucking heavy to drag around.

This how you know these guitar threads are full of pleb or shit songwriters. Jamming is part of the creative, you morons. It's how you develop good ideas. You play something "random", eventually hearing something that's sounds like good music then you build on it.

This is like Songwriting Fundamentals 101.

Stay in school, faggots.
>>
>>65242621
i don't use many pedals, just overdrive/distortion/fuzz/delay

i prefer the twin because i can get exactly what i want out of it, plus i've been using it for like 15 years so i know what to expect out of it. it's kind of a comfort zone i guess? it's just a big huge crystal clean sound that i can build on top of.

i play a tele, but with the bassbreaker it's just a bit too bassy for me, i haven't tried humbuckers with it yet, but i'm assuming it will get even more bassy

The inspiration was being dragged to Sunday school as a kid and having to listen to some guy come in and sing to us. Usually just some open chords and repetitive lyrics. Then, we would all start praying, with the same old open chords still going. After that, back to the song.

I wrote another "song" like this one about Bill Cosby a few years ago. It was called "His Name Was Bill", and it started out along the lines of "Once, there was a man who loved Jell-O Pudding."

it's a line 6 spider so it's going to sound like shit regardless

I haven't used one of the line 6 spiders but generally amps tend to sound best when all the EQ controls are set about noon (middle).

don't use so much gain where you can't hear the articulation of the notes. try to play mostly clean-ish at the start so you can hear the flaws in the playing. it's easier to start playing properly at the start rather than correct mistakes later on.

The biggest mistake most new players make with Line 6 combos is using the insane channel with scooped mids and way too much treble and gain. Stick to the metal channel, keep a good amount of mids in, and keep the gain at a reasonable level. You're not going to get anywhere near great tone, but it's usable for a practice amp

dude vocalists have to but guitarists don't. if the PA doesn't suck the sound guy usually does. and if yr trusting the sound guy then a mic on the speaker will always sound better than a DI. there is no reason

> i prefer my twin, but it's just too fucking heavy to drag around
you don't deserve what you have. 'but muh back'. y o u w e e p i n g v a g i n a

this is not a musical instrument

>>65245443
don't do it anon. not unless you already have the quality wattage
>>
What are some nice basses with relatively thin necks and good fret access? Would love a Ric but they're way over my ~450 euro budget.
>>
>>65243896
Shit nigger that's a vintage cat, tabby model I think. Those are pretty rare and yours looks in good shape. Post a clyp of it meowing.

How do you guys feels about this meme machine
>>

Ibanez SR.

>>65246880
That's not a meme machine, it has no fancy bright color and apparent wood.
Also these danelectros are turbo garbage, why would you ever buy a guitar with that little fret access ? There's even enough room to add in more frets, or another neck pickup.
>>
>>65246912
haha god that's so true thats a ridiculous amount of fret access what was i thinking

God forbid they make the guitar actually playable right ? I mean who the fuck cares about playing guitar anyway. Beqsides making a small cut would be too much work for the CNC machine.
>>
>>65247125
Because not everyone needs to play above the 15th fret like a wanker
>>
>>65247174
why limit yourself?
do you ever tune down?
do you ever use a capo?

Have you ever seen an Arch top

>playing over the 15th fret means you're a wanker
sounds pretty uncreative of yourself.

>>65247183
Archtops, hollowbodies and any kind of acoustics make sense, body shape on an electric only influences playability and to some extend, tuning stability, not sound.
>>
>>65247203
shape can affect how long cetain frequencies last, so it does affect sound, not saying that that guitar is good just sayin
>>
>>65247278
Not to offend you but that sounds like bullshit.
But even if it's true, you can modulate your signal so much it doesn't really matter in the long run.
>>
>>65247038

You'll be surprised how good they are, up there with their American counterparts.
>>
>>65247324
its pretty basic logic if you look at it out of guitars
take two identical pieces off wood
ones is oval and one is square
some notes can die out faster than the rest of the notes because of how the shape resonates with it

sorry if im not very understandable english isnt my main language

Guitar pickups work because of magnetic interference, they don't care about anything that isn't metal moving around.
The exception would be piezos or pickups that went microphonic iirc
>>
>>65247412
i am talking about sustain, some guitars have weaker sustain on certain notes
>>
>>65247448
sustain is literally a marketing ploy. the only genre where you would really care about sustain is ambiant, and that can be fixed with either a compressor or an ebow.
>>
>>65247475
also i am not talking about tonewood i dont believe it exists i think shapes affect sound more due to resonance being an actual thing

some prog stuff requires long sustain
>>
How do I bypass the tone knobs on a Gibson with a printed circuit board? Does cutting them off/unsoldering them work?
>>

>dude vocalists have to but guitarists don't. if the PA doesn't suck the sound guy usually does. and if yr trusting the sound guy then a mic on the speaker will always sound better than a DI. there is no reason

the sound guy is the husband of our singer, he knows his shit, he does it somewhat professionally. it sounds fine with a DI, i wouldn't play it if it sounded like complete shit

i was carrying around that twin for 10 years gig to gig. i'm sick of it.

I need help and fast guys. So I started this 2 piece noise rock band (drums and bass guitar). First couple jam sessions were great. We wrote 2 songs and decided to book a show playing a mini set of about 10 minutes. The show is Wednesday. Yesterday we practiced and I realized I'm really running out of ideas on bass. I don't know if I don't have enough sound manipulation on my pedal board or if i'm just not creative enough or what. But I can't really cancel this show because it would really fuck up my reputation locally.

So I decided to maybe switch to guitar. I think I'll still play those 2 songs we wrote on bass and then switch to guitar for other songs. Problem is I don't really play guitar. I can do basic G E C D open chord progressions and really really simple blues licks, but I don't know shit about barred chords or anything. So I'm asking for help in any possible way. Easy dissonant chord shapes. Maybe an open tuning that would be easy to make dissonant chords?

Anything please help

if you don't know how to play guitar that well, then why are you playing a show in front of people with it? don't do that, you'll regret it. stick to what you know and learn guitar first, then play in front of people.
>>

Enjoy your dad guitar
>>
>>65248617
Why would you book a show without having a set ready?

You're an idiot and there's not much we can help you with. good luck
>>
>>65248634

Because our music isn't really based on technical playing but more hypnotic riffs and drones
>>
>>65248247
>Does cutting them off/unsoldering them work?
You need to make sure the circuit is complete, just unsoldering your tone knob will make your guitar not have any output.

>>65248617
Either take your basic 1-3-5 chord and diminish/augment the 5th (which will either give you a tritone or a minor 6t) if you want mild dissonance, or use a minor second/major seventh if you want something more dramatic.
I'd also recommend not filling the 10 minutes with only songs and keeping something like 2 minutes for warming up the public and presenting your band, that way the public'll be more into it.
