I'm so tired of all the praise Terminal Redux is getting. It's just shitty post-Voivod "prog" metal. I can't even get myself to call it thrash. Just proggy extreme metal with a heavy Voivod vibe.
Why is everyone creaming their pants over it? I listened to the whole hour-and-a-quarter-ish album. I did. It's not a bad album, but it would have been considered outdated ten years ago, nevermind now.
And it's not just a "lol le 4chen may may album xD" thing either. EM is going nuts with the album, too. Are people really that forgetful/ignorant/easy to please? Hell, even Värähtelijä, which also has been obscenely bloated on this board (their sophomore remains their best album so far) hasn't been as baselessly praised as this piece of outdated generic prog metal album.

OSDM revival generally gets praised because OSDM was the best part about death metal. Death metal is meant to be raw, overproduction and digital compression ruin death metal (and metal in general). Bands like Grave Ritual, Funebrarum, and Burial Invocation might be derivative but they are far better than the clean death metal garbage we've been getting since the late 90's. Even then bands like Lantern and The Wakedead Gathering offer a refreshing take on OSDM.

Personally I think that, other than OSDM, the best Death Metal is early technical DM (Atrocity, Pestilence, Cryptopsy, etc) and anything avantgarde/progressive (Gorguts post-1993, Demilich, Lykathea, etc).
To be quite honest all of these are progressive (or avant-garde) to a point. I mean when the first wave of death metal came out, it was ahead of its time, in the forefront, in the *vanguard* of extreme metal.
I guess I prize daring musicians and originality above most other factors.

Most of the time I hear about a band being innovative in metal, it usually means that they've taken the aggressive framework of the genre, cleaned it up a little bit so it doesn'y sound so primitive, and then added a few touches of progressive music, or post-rock, or ambient or whatever to seem new and unique. This is why garbage like Vektor is getting praised as the best metal in years.
