Don't intro into Braxton with his 90's stuff, I'd replace that with Dortmund (1976) Quintet if you want to stick with quartets, or Conference of the Birds if you want a more traditional (but still experimental) jazz album with Braxton.
Or if you want a challenging listen go For Alto (1969)
>>
>>64672691

For C93, I think Thunder Perfect Mind or Black Ships Ate the Sky are better introductions.

Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue (1998)
>alt-country, americana, folk rock

A collection of songs written by Woody Guthrie that Billy Bragg carries a lot better than Jeff Tweedy. To paraphrase an RYM review, Tweedy is just to soft and wishy-washy to carry these jaunty, passionate songs, while Bragg does them justice. The slow burners are the best songs here, full of passion, but the faster songs grate a bit, and it loses a lot of steam in its second half. Uneven, but mostly solid and with high highs.

>Coil - Black Antlers [yamir]
I loved the more instrumental and laid back parts of Ape of Naples, so seeing how everybody described this I should have loved it. But, while it's good and I'll relisten a bunch, it's significantly weaker. The Gimp is cool, but maybe I would've preferred a shorter intro. Sex with Sun Ra is maybe the worst on the record, but it's fine because after it things start picking up. The cover of All The Pretty Little Horses is stunning, I already loved teenage lightning so i liked this version too (prefer the AoN one more though), and Black Antlers is a great closer. Weak start, but I can get down with the record. 3.0 [WINNER]

>Do Make Say Think - You, You're an History in Rust [Thomas]
Ok so: I like post rock, but when it doesn't really stick to the same structure on every piece, which happens very much in the post rock world. I was surprised by the first two songs, grandious and very pleasing, but the rest is basically what those two did stripped down and somewhat more boring. I liked the last minute of the album (surprising noise pop) but everything else was pretty underwhelming and predictable. 2.0+

I must really laud thomas though because fucck if his two previous recs weren't amazing. Yo La Tengo grew up to 4.5 too!

jesse: Alex G - DSU

Solid album. Neat songwriting on this but nothing I liked or would relisten to that much. Jesse does not advance.

orz: Henry Mancini - Breakfast at Tiffany's (Raw Score)

Really liked this. Nice atmosphere, pretty relaxing, pretty comfy and damn it I really like Moon River. I'll probably end up liking this even more when I watch the film. Orz advances.

it was a pretty damn good week for music

Starsailor, Neurobeat and Mysterious Girl have become new favorites

Fabulous Muscles and Songs of an Irish Tinker Lady have the potential to become new favorites

as for the rest, I relistened to some favorite albums, a favorite song of mine and Divine Music from a Jail which did not get a better score from me with a relisten

then there were the other albums new to me which ranged from really good to good to okay and then there was Pink Tape which I did not like much outside of a few moments

I absolutely LOVE the first two and last two tracks; the other four tracks have their moments but the ambient segues and failed attempts at getting noisy are really unnecessary and frustratingly repetitive. Heather Tell Me Why is entirely disposable and Let's Go Away and Carrie Cooksey are way too long for their own good. Overall it's nice, but it's one of those albums I tend to just pick single songs from.

debatable but okay

that's fine

those single songs are damn great song though desu
>are you sure
I know there's a lot of attacks on Kpop here but it seems kinda fun and I know Term told me to stop sperging out about girls but Kpop girls are qts

while Pink Tape was not an album I liked too much because of either too much hip-hop elements, too much EDM elements or bad cheese, I think if I can find more melodic and really pop stuff I might enjoy it

>while Pink Tape was not an album I liked too much because of either too much hip-hop elements, too much EDM elements or bad cheese, I think if I can find more melodic and really pop stuff I might enjoy it

well if you want to get into it you have to start at the source, the one kpop song to rule them all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7mPqycQ0tQ
>>
>>64683679
this is a nice song

I like how it really feels more like pop than bad hip-hop or EDM
>>
>>64683714
Seems like you're looking for something like Wonder Girls' "Reboot"

kpop is pretty rooted in EDM + hip-hop so you should probably expect that a lot in the genre, though. It ranges from like Michael Jackson to Skrillex.
>>
>>64683897
>>64683714
I should probably mention that it ranges from Michael Jackson to Skrillex with a few offshoots into candy-filled sugarplum dreamland

>Simon Wickham-Smith & Richard Youngs - Ceaucescu
I think I don't get it. I loved the vocals ans the album offers a lot of briliant moments you wouldn't hear anywhere else. Some of the songs are too weird and bad though. Maybe it will grow on me.
7/10

>Smoke - Another Reason to Fast
Nice! This album has a great momentum. The dramatic combination of the trumpet, the cello and Smoke's voice really gets me. That trumpet wew.
8/10

>Grouper - A I A: Alien Observer
More ambient than Dragging, more lo-fi and even more beautiful. Listening to this, nothing around matters anymore. Can you get more comfy and intimate than this?
8/10

Any suggestion on what to do next?

Album of the week
>The Cardinall's Musick/Andrew Carwood - Tallis: Lamentations
This is a refreshingly good performance of Tallis' medieval music. This breathes life back into the music and makes many other recordings of Renaissance music feel dry and academic. Nicely done.

Others
>James Blake - The Colour in Anything
I really enjoyed this for about 45 minutes then started to get bored. This is probably his best release so far.

>Roman Diaz - L'o fun da Bata
Some nicely done Nigerian trad - the female choirs are excellent. Well worth the time

Tzadik New Japan
These continue to be very good. Both Sachi Hayasaka and especially the Satoko Fujii releases are very good jazz. The Hikashu compilation is a nice intro to that band. Of course New Rap is great.

Prom was alright. I had fun I guess. I felt awkward the whole time and every song was from 2007. Giant grind circle in the middle I didn't participate in. In that case, I thought it would be a waste to continue trying to get into it, but if enough people think it's worth giving another shot, I'd consider it.
>>
>>64693411
Radiohead are bigger here than Swans though.

Also the album was pretty decent. I'll award it a star, why not, I'm not made of stone.
>>
>>64693449
PW was decent, wasn't great but it definitely doesn't deserve the hate it gets. TKOL is legitimately great though, might be in my top 3 Radiohead albums.
>>
>>64693449
or some people just prefer those sounds to much of the bands' other work which has its own faults that would be called out without hesitation if they came out tomorrow? honestly if you don't follow hip music blogs and still dislike those albums that's fine, but the hype-fueled backlash for either one was completely unwarranted. and i don't even like tkol much.

Neither album deserves hate, I just don't think they're deserving of high praise. TKOL is a fine album with standout tracks, but it doesn't do much for me as a cohesive whole.

>>64693734
And I think that's legitimate if an argument can be formed to support it. I'm not accusing you or anyone of being contrarian, I just think in general people are coming out in defense of PW purely because it got panned.

>>64693778
Assuming you're not just baiting since you're using the hampus name, would you care to elaborate? Nothing on that album came out to me as experimental in the least bit, in fact I thought it was pretty safe. But what do I know?
>>
We /Radiohead/ now?

>>64693423
Yeah. I felt like my date felt more awkward than I did, but we went with enough people that we knew, so it wasn't so bad.

>>64693523

Motorik style drum machine combined with excessive usage of layered loops and "out of tune" melodies. It's very unconventional for a rock band to do anything of the sorts. Even the safer tracks like Lotus Flower really go all in with the loops and homogeneity throughout, which makes it really off-putting for a lot of people, and I think that's why it received so much trashing. People wanted more rock jams and instead got a mash up of krautrock like electronica.
>>

Well the reason why people didn't like it is pretty clear to me, and you're completely right in that regard.
As for what's experimental about the album, you definitely make it sound more interesting than the album itself, but I do want to continue listening to it.
Have you heard the alternate master of the album? I like this version a lot better as the things you mention are much less subtle and more apparent.

Perhaps that's why I never heard what you're talking about, because it's far too subtle?

yeah i can get to that. the polyrhythms did stick out as a huge draw for me. I think i just wore out of it, basically the one album with songs of theirs i'm still coming back to is Hail to the Thief.

A lot of people started to "get" TKOL after watching the live from the basement version. It's pretty great, you should check it out if you want to try to appreciate the album more.

Wow that is fucking terrible, what the fuck is going on with that drum. Talk about ruining the entire song.
